The sudden change that settled over Myrtlebloom unnerved him, and similar to old times, Brackendawn felt his temper rearing its head. He kept telling everyone he had changed and he wasn't like that so he suppressed it. His pelt bristled, but otherwise he tried to remain impassive. Myrtlebloom dropped back to hunt and he watched her wearily, slowing his steps. The she-cat returned with a rabbit and the tom's eyes widened while he offered her a tight-lipped smile and a curt nod. The easy compliemnts and chatter he had given her before, caught in his throat and stung, turning into cruel insults he did not want to unleash on her. He was thankful when the calico elaborated on her switchup, Brackendawn frowned, but he wasn't surprised. Shatteredsky was a difficult cat, and he loved his brother but that didn't mean he understood the intricacies of his mind. "That's okay, sometimes I don't really get along with him either, I don't blame you." he said, feeling himself ease up.
The brindled warrior rolled his shoulders and scented the air, he still really wanted to catch a hare. He felt slightly incompetent with how Myrtlebloom seemed to excel. There was still no scent to be found, today must not be a hare day. His whiskers twitched in disappointment.
The bristling of the tom’s pelt and the stiffness in his face, hadn’t gone unnoticed. Myrtlebloom watched Brackendawn carefully. Would he attack her because of what she said? She relaxed a bit when he did, and she took a few steps away. “I think we should head back to camp…” She mewed quietly.
Her paws uncovered her prey and then dropped a rabbit at the young warrior’s paws. “Would you mind carrying this one back?” Her eyes met his briefly before she turned and picked up the rest of her kill. She started making her way back to camp but kept an eye on Brackendawn. She had upset him, and she didn’t know how he would react.
Her head hung low as they made their way back into camp. She understood her words probably stung, and she would’ve felt upset if any cat were to speak badly about Yewshade. Myrtlebloom dropped her prey off at the kill pile and turned to face Brackendawn. “I’m sorry if I upset you and I hope we can put this behind us. You seem like a nice cat, and I think we could become friends. Maybe we can go hunting again some time?” She mewed softly without really making eye contact with the tom. "Sure," mewed Brackendawn in agreement "We caught a lot today, Wolfstar will be more than pleased with us." He followed after Myrtlebloom, recovering his own prey. At the sund of her voice he paused, before taking the rabbit graciously from her. "No trouble!" His tail whisked behind him happily, glad to be of help to the she-cat where he could.
They arrived back in camp and he deposited his catch plus Myrtlebloom's rabbit on the fresh kill pile with a proud purr. The pile was huge, and for a moment he feared it may collapse under their bounty. He admired it for several moments before turning back to the calico she-cat. A friend, and an offering? Blue eyes sparkled, despite their disagreement this had gone perfectly. Honeydew would be so excited to hear the progress he was making, Bubblebeam and now Myrtlebloom too. Perhaps he was better at connecting with other cats than he gave himself credit for. "I'm glad to hear it, you're an amazing hunter, I'd be lucky to accompany you!" purred Brackendawn
