A sense of pride blossomed in the warrior's chest at being named a mentor so young. As he blinked down at the sleeping frame of Irispaw, it occurred to him that he felt rather unprepared for the task. Taking care of himself was enough, but another young cat? He'd never even thought of having kits before. After blinking several times, he finally outstretched a paw to prod her far more gently than how Kestrelpaw usually woke him.
"Wake up, Irispaw." His voice was abnormally soft. Coughing slightly, it returned to normal volume, ignoring any of the other remaining apprentices that might be sleeping, "It's time to see the territory."

Irispaw snuggled deeper into the moss as her sleep was interrupted by a feather-light tap on her shoulder. "Doekit, stop bugging me, it's not even sunhigh." She grumbled groggily to herself as she slowly woke up, forgetting where she was until she opened her eyes to see the walls of the apprentice den and her mentor looking down at her. He had barely finished speaking before she was jumping out of her nest, all her earlier sleepiness forgotten.
"Will we get to do any hunting today? Ooh- or battle training? Can we do some battle training after we see the territory, pleaaasseee?" She immediately began peppering her mentor with questions, her excitement obvious.

His whiskers twitched at the way sleep clung desprately to his apprentice. Quickly, as Irispaw became aware of the waking world, the excitement became palpable. Beyond Doekit and Hopepaw, Auburnflare had little experience with young cats but he found them amusing. He'd never had siblings, or raised kits of his own of course, but her enthusiasm seemed to spark his own.
"Woah, hold up there, young paw! There will be plentry of time to do it all - don't worry. Don't want to tire us both out on day one right?" The handsome brown and white warrior shot her a teasing wink as he lead the way out of camp. He lacked mentorship experience, and while he had no idea of where to properly start, it didn't quite matter to the warrior. The day would take them wherever it did. Hunting seemed logical enough just in case they happened upon any prey.
At the bottom of the ravine he paused his side remarks explaining the territory, giving her a moment to drink in the new sights before launching into a brief hunting tutorial, "Make sure when you crouch, your belly is off the ground. Keep your paws light and watch your step. I used to be such a noisy hunter always scaring prey off, oh and! Watch your tail. That's important too. If you practice on the way to the Stony Hallow, I'm sure you can catch something before sunset."

Irispaw had never imagined Thunderclan territory could be so big. She craned her neck to look up at the tree tops, hungrily gazing at the squirrels who leapt innocently from tree to tree, before her attention was snared by the colorful birds that flitted by. Her mentor's voice faded momentarily into the background as she allowed herself to be distracted by the songs of the forest, only to snap guiltily back to attention as she remembered she ought to be paying attention. Hopefully Auburnflare wouldn't notice, there was just so much to look at out here and she found it quite impossible to look at everything and listen at the same time. Instead she opted to fix her gaze on her mentor's lithe brown and white form as he demonstrated the hunting crouch.
Hmm, that didn't seem too difficult. "Like this?" She said after she'd maneuvered herself into an imitation of Auburnflare's tutorial, glancing eagerly up at him. "Hey, this is easy!" She exclaimed excitedly as she began to creep forward on her belly. It was a bit annoying when her thick fur insisted on getting tangled up in every single thorn or burr on the forest floor, but after some practice, she found that as long as she remembered to keep her belly off the ground it wasn't as bad.

The young mentor's whiskers twitched in amusement at her struggle to focus. While he didn't say anything, the brown and white patched tom did not mind her wandering gaze. There was so much to see, to digest, on this first outing and he wanted Irispaw to learn it all. Thankfully, she seemed as eager to learn as she was enthralled with the new sights and sounds.
"Great job, Irispaw!" Auburnflare praised with a genuine purr. He noted how she adjusted to keep her stomach off the ground while staying low. Pride bubbled up in his chest as he leaned forward, "Alright, now, you want to part your maw, taste the air. I'm sure you reminder what squirrel smells like from the freshkill pile. There's one close, upwind. Stay quiet and try to catch it."
