The moon was rising high in the sky now, the shock waves of the news that Mottlestar, Vipershade, and Firefly died had settled into quiet mourning. Tonight they would hold a vigil for those who were lost, those who wanted to participate could join if they wanted. It was tradition to honor the deceased by holding a vigil after they pass.

While he was the first to sit beneath the moon with his deceased clan mates in front of him, the tired medicine cat had a feeling he would not be the last. Echosong would welcome his clan mates as they joined him. Silence wasn't necessary- at least in his mind. He hoped someone may share a nice story or memory if they had one. He figured it would be therapeutic, to talk and reminisce.

As he gazed up at the sky he could swear he saw three new stars above him, shining just a bit brighter than the rest.

As exhausted as Silverdusk was from her injuries, the battle and the emotional stress, the sleep they fell into was fitful and short lived. After sharing tongues with their clanmates, she'd left to sleep, and to process their grief alone and on their own terms. Albeit, not much processing was done, just staring blankly at the thicket that composed the walls of the warrior's den until sleep overcame her. Silverdusk wished her sleep had been dreamless, but when their eyelids fell shut and her breathing slowed all she saw was a river ran red, and bodies lining the shoreline. Screams filled their ears in a deafening crescendo, begging them to help or alternatively begging SkyClan to spare them. These dreams were different to the real battle though, they were almost worst. This time the silver warrior was accompanied by cats she truly knew and cared deeply for, it wasn't a band of almost strangers called upon by their leaders, it was her loved ones. Wiggleworm, Quailprowler, Vinecrawler, Acornstem - they all followed Mottlestar into battle, and one by one each and every single one was murdered and Silverdusk was forced to watch.

This time when they awoke, lurching forwards, breathing coming in heavy pants, they knew they wouldn't be sleeping again. It was moonhigh, she'd asked Wiggleworm to awake her so that they may sit the vigil together, but he hadn't. He'd let her sleep, and even if it wasn't what they wanted it was more than likely what the molly needed. Rising to her paws, she passed the spotted tom, and gently pressed their nose to his forehead in gratitude, before joining the others outside. Silverdusk held their head high, still determined to present themselves as composed and rational despite, how she felt inside. That deep down they were just a quivering kitten, who should never put their name down for the stars forsaken battle patrol.

Cats were only just beginning to emerge from their dens, Silverdusk glad to be among them and not the last stragglers to arrive. If any of the deceased warriors befoer them were to be disrespected it would not be by her and their tardiness. Sullenly they settled on their haunches beside Echosong, dipping their head in greeting to the medicine cat. "Echosong," They wished they could offer him a smile, or at least try and be polite, but the emptiness they felt within left Silverdusk unable to really produce much, without wanting to scream.

A quiet air of grieving had settled in Thunderclan's camp. Auburnpaw, still burning with unreasonable angry, had held back from approaching the prepared bodies. The medicine cats had done what they could to cover the scents of blood and death with a myriad of herbs. As his maw parted slightly, he quickly determined that it only did so much.

Eyes glancing towards Echosong, at the very least the apprentice uncovered some measures of sympathy for the pain of his clanmates. Mottlestar, while a beloved leader, had meant more to his father. Firefly, he hardly knew. And Vipershade, well, the pair had a complicated relationship. Auburnpaw could hardly bring himself to look at the still, black pelt.

He resigned himself to watching the ceremony as a passive observer, instead focusing on the pounding in his ears. It was impossible to shove the feelings away as they threatened to consume him. Rage was easier to stomach than grief.

In silence, Vinecrawler took a seat beside Silderdusk, a sandy tail briefly laying across her shoulders in comfort before returning to wrap around his own paws as his head bowed. There were many traditions he was not in agreement with when it came to Clan life, but mourning the dead he was very much for.

While he knew little of Vipershade and only crossed paths with Firefly in glares and cold shoulders, there was one body amongst the three that he was here for: Mottlestar. Her tiny body lay lifeless, still as a frozen river. Tears pricked his eyes as he mumbled his own prayers in the feral tongue for her safe passage, whether through Gekala or StarClan. It didn't matter which. All he cared about was that she made safe passage to an eternal life of peace that she deserved. She may not have fully understood him, but she listened with an open heart and accepted him for who he was within her Clan. Truly, she was the Mother of ThunderClan and always would be.

Fawn
shine
And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?
"So you were never a saint and I've loved in shades of wrong. We learn to live with the pain, mosaic broken hearts."
Numbness. A blatant numbness that felt as if it was going to continue for an eternity settled deep within her—a combination of grief, anger, and devastation that made this feeling drag on. Visions of flashing claws and terrified hisses spewed out at each other mid-battle flashbacked in her mind; snapped back only to the still body of Mottlestar presented in vigil in front of them all.

Sitting beside Echosong and the rest of her clanmates to remain in respectful silence, Fawnshine dipped her head. For long she remained bowed in front of the leader; the tiny body of a brave leader with too large of a heart to stubbornly take on everything amidst her way—something she found herself both admiring and regretting to have allowed.

Not that Mottlestar ever needed, nor requested such a certain thing. It just... felt right, somehow, to feel as protective of her as she did with her family. She would offer more words of condolences - sharing tongues and exchanging memories—but it felt as though they were too personal to share, as selfish as her inner conscience told her it would've been. As for her departure with 'StarClan'... She prayed they'd let their leader rest at least, from wrecking herself too hard to exhaustion during living moons.

gone but never forgotten

thrushnose

He wanted to cry.

No, he had to cry. But his tears had all been dried out ever since the devastating news of Mottlestar's passing and the hauntingly dull eyes of his mother flashing back at him—her body sacrificed from war with immense bloodshed met with just... Grief. Confusion. What was he even supposed to feel anymore?

His throat had been sore, feeling like someone had permanently lodged their claws deep into his neck—from the inside—and dragged the grief out of him to make him dizzy and light-headed all day. He felt sick; nauseous from all the sobbing and endless crying he'd done since the day her death was announced. It didn't make it any better, knowing Firefly, his sister, had also passed on the same day. It made him wonder if Murkyriver even knew about it at all - if she had also wrecked herself through the war and...

Oh Stars. Was she safe?

Thrushnose wasn't sure what to think if she wasn't. But for now, enough grief was on his mind. Stepping forward to touch heads with his mother, he swallowed back thickly a choked sob and more tears. How he regretted it then that he hadn't followed her to battle—how he wasn't able to accompany her until the very last moments of life and death; he felt sickly and blamed himself for not having been brave enough to have lived up to her hope of the name given to him - the one he chose out of all other combinations. The one his mother's mentor had.

ೄྀ࿐ ˊˎ-

"Did you know... Thrushnose was my mentor's name?"

The memory came crashing back to him like tidal waves. Suddenly he was back as an apprentice, on that same fortunate day things had been cleared up and the day Mottlestar told him all about her and the story of the mentor that came before her—Thrushnose.

"Thrushnose was a dedicated, kind-hearted warrior to Thunderclan. She was Stoatstar's mother, who was leader before Minnowfin. Who, as I'm sure you've heard, was leader just before me. She even left Thunderclan in search of an herb that Starclan gave a prophecy about, but they had no true way to know if they were searching for the right herb or not, if my memory tells me right. She was the one who taught me what it was like to have a mother... and how to be a mother to even some of the toughest kits."

He had listened intently then—and every word rang back clear and true, even now. He remembered every single little detail; from the tear-drops falling from her eyes, how her yellow eyes had danced with the same fondness Thrushnose carried on as he reminisced back to the memory... And her smile. What he'd do to see that again - if only for just, one last time.

"I think, you are more than deserving of her name. To carry on her legacy. Because Thrushnose, you hold her heart, and I know she would be proud of you."

Am I?

"You are the only cat I could think of who could ever fill her pawsteps. I would be honored to pass her name onto you, my son."

You believe in me.

ೄྀ࿐ ˊˎ-

Tears streamed down his face into thick rivulets sliding off his cheeks and staining the earth; the same one that she would inevitably be buried in. A part of him wanted to nag and just beg like a little kit that for once, he could be a little selfish for himself and his Mom and keep her with him forever. But she's in StarClan now. And the truth of that only made his heart clench tighter in grief.

Never had Thrushnose been so torn with himself before. His claws dug helplessly at the dirt—he wanted to yowl, to cry and scream how deeply unfair it has been that her life just had to be ripped away so soon. Far too soon—before she could've even seen him forming a family or having kits of his own. Or in the future, Murkyriver's, too—but Firefly's life had also been reaped in haltering pain.

Ma... Firefly... I miss you. We miss you.

And so, once again, he buried his face into the long-faded warmth of her fur and sobbed; sniffling and praying to StarClan that she'd be safe above there, reunited with Thrushnose and Minnowfin and Firefly - and everyone else she has ever loved. He didn't want to be strong anymore. He wanted to just be vulnerable, to sink deep into this feeling of grief and never sober—But I know she would never allow me that.

She'd given Thrushnose his name for a reason—Thrushnose—and he would not fail her trust in him while she watched over him from above. With a wry, shaky smile filled with bittersweetness and pain; he kneeled forward to whisper against her forehead.

"I love you. I'll make you proud of me."
