The Day Brings a Greater Light (Open to WindClan)

Daisypaw felt a little stronger than she had the day previous, a newfound clarity in her bright amber eyes. Her tail swished  gently behind her as she prepared each carefully portioned herb blend, triple checking each one. Her legs felt almost weightless in relief. The slunking illness that had feverishly hunted her clanmates had finally lost its edge. She knew how to kill it now, and she wanted blood. There would be no mercy.

Daisypaw purred quietly at Eveningpaw’s offer, the sound stronger than it had been yesterday. “Good things are happening today.” She said, turning to catch the small she-cat in the bright joy-stained sweep of her gaze.  “I have a task for you right here, grab a bit of that lavender, carefully, don’t squish the blooms, and follow me.” She pointed out the portioned piles of Lavender with a flick of her white-tipped tail, and then gently scooped up one of the herb bundles, sinking her teeth securely into the wrapping.

Cloudypaw was her first victim, and Daisypaw weaved through the many nests in the medicine den to the apprentice with practiced ease. There was an almost predatory purposefulness to her step, the precious bundle of herbs bumping gently against her white chest, heavy with the complicated combination. She gently set the thick bundle down beside the calico she-cat’s nest.  “Hi Cloudypaw” Daisypaw purred softly, the gentleness of her voice warring with the intensity in her amber eyes.  “There are a lot of herbs here, and it might be difficult to get them all down, but I need you to try your best okay?” She caught the edge of the wrapping with one of her sharp claws, and relieved the slightly crushed leaves and bits of Burdock Root, all mingled together. She pushed the mixture towards Cloudypaw.  “It’s going to taste pretty bad, but you’re tough.” The bi-color molly purred encouragingly, and then beckoned for Eveningpaw with the lavender.  

“Watch me do this, and then you can be in charge of the lavender for everyone else, okay?” Daisypaw took the lavender between her claws and gently kneaded the fragrant flowers until the scent was thick and heavy in the air. She took the crushed blooms and gently worked them into the fur over Cloudypaw’s chest and shoulders.

Daisypaw has used Tormentil, Coneflower, Lamb's Ear, Ragweed, Burdockroot, Lavender, and Wild Garlic on Cloudypaw!

Daisypaw gave Cloudypaw’s ear a comforting lick, making sure the molly was able to lap up her herbs. Satisfied, she motioned Eveningpaw back towards the lavender stores, pausing mid stride as Lavendercloud began to stir. “No, it’s okay mom, lay back down.” She purred, ears flicking back in concern. The bi-colored molly bounded back over to her stores, nimbly dodging nests with a surprising agility. After moons of being sick, and now able to do something about it Daisypaw felt as spray as when she was a kitten, leaping after leaves and rolling over her littermates. She grabbed another bundle in her jaws, grateful that she had prepared them beforehand, and eased her way over to the queen, gently rubbing the flat of her head against her mother’s shoulder.

She unwrapped the bundle and nudged the herbs closer. “Here, eat these, no honey like before, but they’ll do their job.” She sat back, white-tipped tail flicking at her paws. Her amber eyes, a perfect mirror to her mother’s own, stared down the queen with a heated intensity, as if daring that awful slinking illness to make another move while she was sitting right here, claws out and wreathed in the sharp scent of herbs. You may have had us by the throat for a while there, but now I know just how to rip you apart. She thought, a fierce bloom of hope roaring like a forest fire in her chest.

“Eveningpaw is going to come over and rub something on your chest that will help your breathing, alright?” Daisypaw leaned over and began to rasp her tongue between the frail queen’s ears, trying to ease her mother’s fever-induced worry.

Daisypaw purred softly as her mother finished the herbs. It seemed to calm her fever too, seeing as the queen settled back into her nest without a fight. Feeling like a great weight had been lifted off her chest, the bi-colored molly rearranged her mother’s nest, making sure it was comfortable, before moving on to the next cat. So many were sick, but the medicine cat apprentice knew no fear, only vengeance on the awful plague that had tried to swallow her clan whole. Unfortunately for it, WindClan was too strong and too stubborn to be snuffed out so quickly. They were star-touched, and Daisypaw felt the cool white-warm breath of StarClan over her shoulder as she worked.

She went back to her stores for another herb bundle, passing back by Cloudypaw on the way. “You stay in that nest and get some rest Cloudypaw.” She said, leveling the apprentice with a knowing glance. With another herb bundle swinging from her jaws, she gingerly made her way over to Tallshadow. The lanky golden tom was slumped in his nest, flanks heaving in unsteady, rasping breaths. Daisypaw unwrapped the bundle and gently nudged the warrior awake. He blinked at her with dull unfocused eyes. “Here, try to get these down.”. The she-cat sat back as Tallshadow weakly lapped at the herbs, amber gaze betraying nothing, but her white-tipped tail flicked anxiously at her flank.

With one last glance at the golden warrior, Daisypaw moved on to the next sick cat. She grabbed another herb bundle from her stores and gently deposited it at Fennelbreeze's side. “These will help, but they taste terrible. Chew them well, and swallow all of them, okay?” The bi-colored molly split the wrapping with a sharp claw, and nudged the bitter-smelling bundle towards the pale warrior. Eveningpaw had her plate full with the rest of the cats in the den, so Daisypaw left Fennelbreeze to her herbs and retrieved a few stalks of Lavender. She settled back down next to the cream she-cat and kneaded the flowers until their sweet scent hung heavy in the air. Satisfied, Daisypaw gently rubbed the crushed lavender over Fennelbreeze’s fur. “This will help ease your breathing some, and hopefully cover the garlic scent, I know it’s unpleasant.”
