Stars, it had been some time since the leader had to hold a ceremony without the Tallrock to help with height. He cleared his throat, and did his best to call out loud enough for the Windclan group to hear him. "Windclan! Let all cats hold enough to walk the moors... gather around me for a clan meeting!" Half of the phrase felt useless in the current moment, but he recited it nevertheless. He hoped that enough cats were present for the ceremony; he'd chosen a moment wherein the clans were stopping to rest, but other cats could very well be asleep or hunting at the moment. At least, Tallpaw was here, that's what really mattered, he supposed.

Tallpaw’s large ears twitched at Smallstar’s summons. It still felt strange to hold clan meetings in the middle of everything. The fading scents of the other clans as cats weaved around each other and got settled after the day’s trek were disconcerting. Everything felt like a thorn stuck in a paw, a sharp reminder that their way of life was still crumbling around them in that achingly slow decay. The golden tom joined the gathering crowd, wrapping his tail neatly around his paws. Even sitting he could easily see over the heads of his clanmates. He tended to stick to the back of the crowd for that reason, plus it was less noticeable when Goldenpaw decided she wanted to do anything other than pay attention. For now he enjoyed the moment of stillness, focused intently on Smallstar as he waited for the leader to address the clan.

Sootstorm wasn't that far off from where Tallpaw was, having made sure that his son, his only son that still walked the living world, was always within his sights. The call of Smallstar's voice was unexpected, but not unwelcomed. Some directions about their current situation and what to do next, even if it was just empty speculation, was better than nothing at all. The tom settled down close to Tallpaw, waiting for his leader to continue.

"Tallpaw, please step forward." Smallstar only spoke when he noticed Tallpaw near the back of the crowd, making eye contact with the apprentice. "Do you pledge to honor and defend WindClan? Even at the cost of your own life?"

Tallpaw felt a prickle of surprise at the summons but it was quickly drowned out by the buzz of excitement that hummed like a live wire under his pelt. With his tail held high, he subtly bushed his shoulder against Sootstorm’s as he passed, the brief touch grounded him as he stepped before his clanmates and any other straying eyes. He reached Smallstar in a few long strides, amber eyes flashing with pride. Despite everything, it made his pads tingle, to feel the ceremonial words wash over him. There wasn’t a Tallrock and this wasn't their familiar sky, but even under foreign clouds he felt sheltered by the blessings of their ancestors. He met the WindClan leader’s gaze head on. There was no doubt. He would do anything for his clan, it was in his blood, his loyalty affixed to him as firmly as his golden pelt or long plumed tail. There was no part of his soul that was pulled in any other direction. This was his path, and he walked it as sure as all those who came before him. “I do.” He said, unwavering, looking something close to regal as he stood tall before his clanmates, shoulders pulled back and head held high despite the knobs of his spine pressing starkly against his pelt or the slight jut of his hip bones.

Smallstar nodded. "Then, I grant you your warrior name. From now on, you will be known as Tallshadow. Starclan and Windclan alike honor you for your dedication and loyalty. I look forward to see what you may accomplish." Stepping forward, he touched his nose to the newly-named warrior's head, now that he wasn't a Tallrock away. The act of naming a warrior outside of camp wasn't new to him - he'd done so, unfortunately, on many occasions now, but he was able to at least say that Tallshadow's addition to Windclan's warrior ranks brought him a flicker of hope. It told him that, despite the forest's troubles, Windclan was able to survive and grow.
As the crowd gathered around Tallshadow, Smallstar stepped backwards, letting out a sigh of relief.

Tallshadow. The first of his kits to earn his warrior name. Sootstorm found this particular name difficult to say, as if it was stuck in his throat. Tallshadow. His son in every way but blood. The tom gave up on trying to speak and instead rushed up to the newly-named warrior, nuzzling his cheek fondly while purring his heart out.
