The ilk that had permeated its way into their clan's borders had been less than ideal on all fronts. It had been particularly infuriating, if anything, to see what had once been a plentiful supply of prey turn into scraps of nothingness. Their prey supply had become nothing more than the idea of a scent on the wind, hardly captured by even the most keen of noses. Their kindred spirit of the water had been gravely wounded, and its resulting shortage of fish to give had been the first ill-omen. Such an event had been a call to action for many cats of her Clan, and it was one that she would not ignore. They needed to survive with the dropping temperatures, with their thinning frames. As her leader had ordered, there would be minimal in the way of border patrols. Egretswoop had taken particular notice as to how the border patrols had dwindled from multiple within a day to only a single one, perhaps not even sent out and prioritized over attempting to find something for her clanmates to eat.

She understood. It was not hard to comprehend why food and potential water sources needed to be prioritized above all else, and it was why she brought the tom that had been under her tutelage to the Beech Copse. Easily had it been their most plentiful location for prey that did not rely strictly upon the water to survive much as they themselves did. "Iron," The tom's heritage name rolled off her tongue in a smooth call. Unfamiliar to many, and still somewhat unfamiliar to her, but even as it felt foreign on her tongue, the face it belonged to did not. "Let us sharpen our skills for hunting other creatures here. I will demonstrate, and have you follow."

However, just as the molly had been prepared to demonstrate the hunting structure for land creatures, it seemed the forest had other plans. A hiss that sounded not-quite feline caught her attention, whipping her head directly towards the pair of wings that now aggressively flapped in their direction. Alarm had painted her features for just a moment before they turned into a feral hiss of her own, the fox-pelted molly immediately slipping into the mindset required for battle. "Target the wings, avoid the beak!" She instructed quickly. Immediately after, with a grace that only fit that of the bird she had been named after, she lept directly at the goose. Potentially, they could use it for food if they were too desperate, but it was an event she certainly would prefer to avoid.

As she targeted directly for the bird's head to be sure to shield her apprentice from its sharp pecks, the fowl seemed to know just what to do in defense. Had she kept her claws raking into the feathered creature's neck, it would have also allowed her to practically blind the bird with her pelt. Given the fact it was now outnumbered, it would not have helped its chances to do so. Desperation to survive of the goose's own had kicked in, and Egretswoop grunted as she felt its beak stab at her chest.

Iron--though he was still getting used to the secondary name--followed his mentor dutifully on their patrol. Though he was hungry and tired, so was everyone else, so there was no point in complaining or asking for special treatment. It was in everyone's best interests that he put in the work to catch as much prey as he possibly could. He wasn't the best hunter in the world, but he wasn't the worst either. He squared his shoulders at Milk's instruction. "Okay," he answered simply. She was a great hunter, and so following her techniques would lead to him catching more prey than he would have otherwise. It wasn't a hard command to follow.

Only, it appeared that their day was destined for interruption. No sooner had Milk gone into a hunting crouch than a goose appeared, announcing its presence with a loud hiss. The predators--just as starving as the warriors were--had gotten more aggressive recently, so it was obvious that the goose meant to attack. His instincts were nowhere near as quick as his mentor's. She leapt for it almost immediately, while he was still flinching back in the initial moment of shock. But he was supposed to be a fighter, a warrior, able to protect those he cared for. It took a second, and her concise commands, to snap him out of the disorientation. But once he snapped out of it, he raced forward to help. Target the wings, avoid the beak, he repeated to himself. A bit easier said than done, given how frantically the goose was flapping. But Iron waited patiently, half-crouched, until he saw an opening. Then--claws unsheathed--he slashed at the vulnerable underside of the goose's wing, tearing out several feathers. A calculated attack.
