Poppyshine
It had been quite some time since Poppyshine was able to take two apprentices out at once for training, but she was glad that her two apprentices, Swanpaw and Pigeonpaw, were sisters. She had confidence that they would look out for any clanmate who was on a patrol with them, but especially given Pigeonpaw’s tendency to get into trouble, she hoped that Swanpaw would help her keep an eye on Pigeonpaw.
“We’ll go to each of the important landmarks in the territory today,” Poppyshine meowed as she led the pair of apprentices into the forest. “To start with, though, we are going to go over some hunting. I’ve taken Swanpaw to fish a few times already, and I’ll take you to the river in due time, Pigeonpaw, but today we are going to train in catching land prey. There are some seasons where it is hard for us to fish, or it can be dangerous, and so it is important to learn how to catch prey on land too.”
She looked back at them and smiled. She slowed down to their side and then crouched down. “Each critter has a different way to catch them. Some are rarer than others, but it’s good to know. Now for all prey, you want to keep downwind from them, so they can’t smell you. You want to move slowly and carefully, so they can’t hear you amidst the waving grass. Then, you pounce. Birds will fly away and you have to leap and catch them before they get too far. Squirrels will dart away. Rabbits move fast as the wind, so it’s best to get as close to them as you can. Mice are by far the easiest; they don’t hear well and can’t move nearly as fast as you.”
Poppyshine rose high on her paws again. “Which one of you would like to give it a go first?”

Pigeonpaw
Pigeonpaw bounced along, alternating between hopping at Swanpaw’s shoulder or hurrying forward to fall into step with their mentor’s and falling back again. She was ecstatic. Finally, she got to see what life outside camp was all about! The great big world, right at her paws. With the deputy herself as her mentor, no less! Pigeonpaw hadn’t quit boasting about Poppyshine electing to mentor her since her ceremony, even if it was just in her own head. And, and! Poppyshine’s other apprentice wasn’t some random stranger Pigeonpaw didn’t know, or worse, someone she decidedly wouldn’t like. It was her own sister! Her apprenticeship would be a breeze, if things stayed as good as they were today.
Her ears swiveled forward and back while Poppyshine spoke, the best indicator she was listening as her eyes drifted. There was so much to see. It was impossible to take in all at once. It was overwhelming in a way that made her heart race with giddy adrenaline. At the prompting question, she whipped around to look up at her mentor, a grin splitting her face. “Me!” She exclaimed before Swanpaw even had the chance to volunteer. “I bet I’ll catch somethin’ first try.” With no more preamble or pause for instruction, Pigeonpaw darted away from the pair.
It took her several moments to catch the scent of something, trying to pick apart all the muddled smells in the air. Even when her nose twitched and she rounded in search of the prey on the air, she saw the starling before her nose led her to it. Pigeonpaw’s pupils dilated immediately, expanding to almost fully eclipse the blue of her eyes. On pure instinct, she dropped low. Her posture was wobbling and uncertain, but that didn’t stop her from creeping forward as fast as her folded legs would move her. She got impressively close for her fumbling stalk, but throwing herself recklessly at the bird with no forethought sent it fluttering away with a cry of alarm. Pigeonpaw rolled muzzle-first into the wet ground, splattering one of her cheeks with mud and putting an uncomfortable crick in her neck, but she rolled right back onto her paws. Undeterred by the failure, she spun back around to face the slightly-distant figures of Poppyshine and Swanpaw. "What I meant to say was I'll catch somethin' next time. Beginner's, uh-- bad luck!"
Pigeonpaw attempted to catch a bird... attempt unsuccessful. -3 SP.

Swanpaw eagerly trotted after Poppyshine and her sister, tail giving a lash of excitement to be training with her sister today. Poppyshine led the two apprentices towards the beech copse, an area that Swanpaw had spent little time in as of yet, explaining that today they would be hunting land prey. Pale ears flicked forward, listening intently to her mentor speak. Swanpaw had only ever known the bountiful greenleaf, where prey was plentiful and easy to catch. The idea of prey being scarce or difficult seemed foreign to her still, but logically she knew that it must be so at some point. She had heard of the older warriors speak of such sometimes, though not often.
Poppyshine demonstrated a crouch, and Swanpaw immediately tried to copy it. It seemed as though hunting land prey was something more active than sitting around to catch fish, and it made her paws itch with excitement, tail tip swaying back and forth as she attempted to keep still. At Poppyshine’s question, Swanpaw opend her mouth, but Pigeonpaw’s response was faster. “Hey!” She huffed at her sister good-naturedly, though she would not try and hunt while her sister was in the middle of making her own attempt. Instead, Swanpaw sat next to Poppyshine, watching her sister intently as she began to stalk, a starling in her sights. Pigeonpaw threw herself forward recklessly, and Swanpaw fought to stifle a laugh at the mud on her cheek and her sister’s words. “Riiight.” She snickered, “Don't worry, I’ll show you how it’s done, sis!” She chirped affectionately, turning and focusing her attention on her surroundings. A little brown creature caught her attention, a rodent searching among tree roots on the ground for something. Dropping into the yet-uncomfortable crouch, Swanpaw carefully crept forward, hoping desperately that her excitement would not give herself away as she neared her prey. Carefully placing one paw in front of the other, Swanpaw crept closer and closer to the mouse. She leapt, paws somewhat unsteadily landing on the creature's long tail before instinct took over, jaws snapping forward and cutting off the mouse's life.
“See, Pidge?” She turned toward her sister with a grin, excitement gleaming in her blue eyes... And maybe just a little smugness, too.
Swanpaw attempted to catch a mouse for –3 sp. Catch was successful! 57 / 60 sp

Poppyshine
Poppyshine observed her apprentices as they prepared for their hunt. Pigeonpaw was eager to begin and once she found a scent, she attempted her catch. Poppyshine made note of some of the errors in her posture, and she had to bite her tongue to keep from laughing at the exaggerated tumble she took. Swanpaw was quick to try her own pounce, but she was successful.
“Very good the both of you,” Poppyshine reassured. “Pigeonpaw, you had the right idea. You just need to practice your execution. Here, crouch with me again.” She demonstrated a second time and when Pigeonpaw mirrored her, she nosed at part of her stature to help give her better balance. “There you go. That should help you hold yourself still a little easier. When it comes to pouncing on your prey, you should do as your sister did. You move carefully towards it and wait until you are close enough to lunge.”
She stepped back and looked to both of them. “It is also important that you aim your claws towards your prey’s body. Swanpaw, I noticed that you caught the mouse by the tail. You still caught it, but that will not always be the case. It is much harder for a mouse to escape when your claws pierce it than when you are holding onto a flimsy tail.” She smiled warmly at Swanpaw and added, “You still did very well with your catch though. You should be quite proud!”
Poppyshine sat back and looked between the both of them. “Any questions before you both try again?”
