Stars, Wolfblossom thought, but her grandkits were growing up fast. Today was to be another apprentice ceremony, and the deputy was her usual cheerful self as she stood atop the tallbranch. "Let all cats old enough to climb a tree gather beneath the tallbranch for a clan meeting!" She called out for the clan, then settled in to wait for them to gather.
Wolfblossom had called yet another clan meeting - she seemed to hear her grandmother's voice more than usual at the moment, purring as she spoke - and her grandmother’s voice was always enough to draw her away from whatever occupied her attention. Sorrelkit wasn’t yet able to climb a tree - but she was technically old enough; it wouldn't be long until she was climbing and could catch more birds than she had paws.
Regardless, it had never stopped her from listening to clan meetings from the nursery. Grandma didn’t seem stressed, cheerful as she stood there - so it had to be something good, not untoward. Maybe SkyClan had found a giant bird. She'd attend a meeting for that. Maybe it was a ceremony. Oh she hoped it was; with their ages, there was every chance it could be an apprentice ceremony for one of her sisters; maybe even her. Sorrelkit stared in awe and wonder at her grandmother from the front of the nursery as she spoke, waiting patiently to find out.
Her granddaughter waited in front of the nursery, and Wolfblossom smiled down at her, "Sorrelkit, step forward." There was more than just her typical excitement in her tone. Warmth, joy, her granddaughter was going to become an apprentice, and Wolfblossom was sure that the rest of her siblings would follow shortly. She only wished that Juniperlight could be present to see her kits grow. Once Sorrelkit had stepped forward, the deputy continued. "You have reached the age of six moons, and it is time you become an apprentice. From today until you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Sorrelpaw. Your mentor will be Lightningbreeze."
Lightningbreeze was, as she often was, taking a nap in the center of SkyClan's camp when Wolfblossom's voice caught her attention. The young warrior spent a great deal of her time running and tree-flying, and otherwise socializing with her Clanmates, and if she wasn't doing any of the above she was almost definitely asleep-- until something happened to wake her, anyway.
It quickly became clear that this was a ceremony, and her ears perked up as she joined the rest of the Clan; excited for the soon-to-be-named apprentice--
And then she paused, nose twitching, very sure she had heard the deputy wrong. She flicked her ear once, then twice, and blinked three times in a row, and nothing had changed and no other cat had stepped forward.
So...
She hadn't misheard.
Are you sure, she thought about asking, but that would definitely come off as rude in the middle of a ceremony.
Lightningbreeze wasn't entirely lacking in self-awareness, which is why while she had sort of known that being made a mentor was a possibility it wasn't one she'd ever considered with any level of seriousness. Her own mentor had been largely absent for the majority of her training, and while she thought she'd turned out just fine she wasn't exactly confident in her ability to teach.
Still, she gave her all to everything she did, and this wouldn't be any different. Even if she had no idea what she was doing.
She stepped forward to touch her nose to the newly-named apprentice's, still wondering if Wolfblossom was maybe a little out of it.
"Hey, Sorrelpaw! We'll start training tomorrow, 'kay? Bright and early, so take some time to have fun now!"
we're only at the beginning of this one-way dream —— info.
Sorrelpaw. It sounded so grown, so unfamiliar as she replayed it in her mind. Who was Sorrelpaw? Who would she become?
Of course, she had thought about this moment in the nursery frequently but nothing had prepared her for how it would feel. To hear her new name for the first time, that was something else. It made her chest tight, unable to fight the grin that inched onto her face.
Lightningbreeze. Sorrelpaw had never met the warrior before, and was almost certain she wasn’t a relative. She was, admittedly, a little disappointed, having anticipated being apprenticed to her family; and with a quick glance between her grandmother and the approaching warrior, it appeared she had also been surprised by the decision. Was it wrong to feel that way? She hoped StarClan weren’t listening to her thoughts. With the eyes of the Clan on her she attempted to keep her expression neutral for the moment, leaning in to press her nose to her mentor’s. It was not the time for petulance. If she had been entrusted to Lightningbreeze, there had to be a reason.
Could her mother hear? A stream of thoughts circled around her mind as she stood there. Sorrelpaw wondered if she had listened from the comfort of the medicine cat den. Her eyes searched out the crowd for her littermates and her father; oh she hoped she would make them proud. Him proud.
Sorrelpaw was brought out of her thoughts by her mentor’s words, her eyes fixing on the warrior. They were starting in the morning - so soon. She was excited, but the comment about fun made her chest feel tight. Was she allowed to have fun, now? She shook the thoughts away from her head, unsure where the sudden concerns had come from. This was her apprentice ceremony; she should be smiling! The new apprentice puffed her chest out, rose her head high and offered a smile to Lightningbreeze. The grey cat had to appear anything but uncertain. She was Sorrelpaw.
“I’ll be ready. I can’t wait to see the trees and learn with you, Lightningbreeze!”
