Dawnfeather, trotting into camp with two plump doves hanging from her maw, immediately leapt into action at the sound of the kit’s call of distress, ears flattened in concern. There was no eagle, no whirlwind of activity, just a lone kit clinging to the Tallbranch- but for the poor thing, that was a big deal! Hmmm… with an easy, almost effortless bound, Dawnfeather leapt straight onto the Tallbranch, sharp claws sinking into rough bark. She’d never been up here before, had she? Impressive, that the kit had nearly managed to climb this high.

“Don’t worry, dear,” she purred, reaching down to gently yet firmly take it by the scruff. “I’ve got you.”

She did not think of reprimands- the poor kit was obvious shaken enough already. In a swift, fluid motion, Dawnfeather returned to the ground, landing lightly with the kit in her maw and then carefully placing it upon the ground. Hopefully the momentary sensation of weightlessness hadn’t startled it.

“No worries, kit,” Dawnfeather purred, quickly glancing over him to make sure he was alright. “My name’s Dawnfeather, dear- you? That was very brave of you, but let’s wait until you’re a little bigger, alright?”

This was a brave one, to have attempted to climb so high at such a young age. No-one else had come running at the kit’s calls of distress, so she assumed his mother was likely out on patrol, or something like that. Besides, he hadn’t ever been in real danger- a little sprain was the worst even a kit could get from such a small fall.

“You’re not a bother, dear,” Dawnfeather reassured the small tom with a quick nuzzle. “Part of my warrior duties is to make sure that everyone is safe and content! Oh, dear- listen to me, okay?”

The golden molly crouched down next to him, looking the kit in the eyes with her own earnest clear gaze. “Bravery isn’t not being scared, okay? It’s what you do with the scared feelings- and what you did was the best thing you could at the moment! Everyone gets scared sometimes- that’s just part of life. I’ve been scared, too- but you’ve just got to keep going and trust that everything will turn out alright! It always does.”

It always did… it did.
