Since Lavenderpaw's quiet little ceremony yesterday, he had been bursting to tell his best friend. He had made up his nest in the apprentice's den next to the one that smelled of Drizzlepaw and freshened hers up for her. He had waited up for her to surprise her, but she must have been out training late.
By the time he woke up in the late morning, she was already gone and Perchstar was getting him to go fishing. He returned home to the island with his first catch held in his teeth.
His eyes immediately landed on the suspicious swish of a wispy ginger-and-cream tail as Drizzlepaw snuck into the opening in the round weaving of reeds. Curiously, Lavenderpaw snuck up behind her.
Tapping her on the shoulder, he grinned around his fish. "
I caught this!" he told her after laying it down.
He was surprised she had come in to stand next to his nest, which was still a little messy from how he had left it this morning, he noticed sheepishly. "
I guess you already know the other surprise," he observed.
Though something was a little different than he had left it and the scent tickled his nose. Dark, dusky, almost grey like him, purple flowers lay in his nest. A smile furrowed his brows with absolute delight.
"
Drizzlepaw, you found lavender?" He knew he was the luckiest. "
Doesn't it only grow in dry places?" He sniffed to appreciate its soothing scent. "
How far did you have to go to get this?" Surely far from the interconnected pools and streams, far away where tree roots and rocks kept the sand dry.
"
Thank you," he offered sincerely. Even with the smell of rain and river mud that soaked them both, he could still scent the flowers she had carefully carried home on her fur. "
We should dry off so we don't catch cold." The rain was still falling outside. "
Want to share this fish?" He had, of course, given another to feed the clan but he had brought his best catch for Drizzlepaw.
