Checking in[C]

Tawnyshadow padded into the clearing, Dawnpaw close behind her. The tortoiseshell coudly hardly contain her excitement as she turned to face Dawnpaw. "Today, we're going to do some hunting," She began, "Show me what Tigershriek taught you." She wasn't Dawnpaw's mentor, but she was her gaurdian, and as her gaurdian it was Tawnyshadow's duty to ensure that Dawnpaw's training was going well. That, and she wanted to spend some time with her ward. Nothing wrong with that, right? She was also going to get her own apprentice soon, so she'd have to learn how to handle an apprentice.

She sat down and waited patiently for Dawnpaw to get into a crouching position.

Dawnpaw got into a crouched position, made sure her furry belly was not in contact with the ground, then mewed happily, "Tigershriek said this was a hunting crouch...he said that when I hunt I need to make sure my pawsteps are soft so I do not alert the prey I am trying to catch."

Dawnpaw got into a somewhat acceptable crouch. "Not bad," Tawnyshadow commented, then flicked her tail over the apprentice's flank, "Don't raise your flank so high, and tuck your hindlegs in more." The warrior circled Dawnpaw slowly, occasionally throwing a "Keep your tail off the ground-- no, not so high!" or a "keep your ears still". Finally, after Tawnyshadow had deemed the crouch good enough, she signalled for Dawnpaw to get up and follow her.

Tawnyshadow tasted the air. Mouse... an easy enough prey for a new apprentice. She jabbed her tail in the mouse's direction and signalled for the apprentice to attempt to catch it.

Hearing Tawnyshadow's praise of saying her crouch was not bad, Dawnpaw was in high spirits. After Tawnyshadow's comments, Dawnpaw made sure her flank was not raised too high, her hindlegs were kept in, her tail off the ground, ears still, not making a single sound that might scare away prey. Finally when her crouch was approved and made acceptable, Dawnpaw purred happily. She was so excited to show Tigershriek her improved hunting crouch!

Tawnyshadow's signal jolted Dawnpaw out of her thoughts. She got up and silently padded after the warrior. Dawnpaw watched the she-cat open her jaw slightly to taste the air before flicking her tail in a random direction. Dawnpaw tasted the air as she had seen Tawnyshadow do earlier. Mouse! The scent of mouse wafted from the direction Tawnyshadow had pointed in and Dawnpaw licked her muzzle, as if already tasting the mouse.

Dawnpaw got into a hunting crouch, once again made sure her flank was not raised too high, her hindlegs were kept in, her tail off the ground, ears still, not making a single sound that might scare away the mouse. She quietly and slowly step by step moved towards the mouse, stalking it, until the mouse was close enough. The mouse, unsuspecting, was nibbling at some grass on the ground.

Dawnpaw managed to catch the mouse, though her technique was not the best. Tawnyshadow flicked her tail irritably. Did Tigershriek not teach his apprentice anything at all?

"Very good, you managed to catch the mouse, but you were upwind from it and your stalking was slow," Tawnyshadow began, "If you were in Thunderclan territory, with all it's undergrowth and shade, where movement must be slow and wind rarely blows, that would have been a good technique. However, you are in Shadowclan territory. See the lack of undergrowth? Feel the cold wind? Hunting here requires quick and silent movements, and only the advantage of surprise can secure the catch."

With all that said, Tawnyshadow tasted the air. Another mouse. Her tail lashed to signal that Dawnpaw stay where she was. That apprentice needs a demostration. Dropping into a crouch, she slid soundlessly through the shadows, her outline disappearing in the shade.

Suddenly, she darted forward, her teeth snapping the mouse's spine before it could even react. Laying the limp body down, she turned to Dawnpaw. "Did you get that?" Tawnyshadow inquired.

Dawnpaw nodded, wondering when Tawnyshadow had suddenly seemed to become her "mentor". It wasn't her fault that Tigershriek had barely taught her anything -they had just started their training not long ago- so it was quite understandable that she did not know much... Dawnpaw wished that Tawnyshadow was not Beetlepaw's mentor though.. she would like to spend time with her adoptive mother like this but the she-cat would soon be spending most of her time to train Beetlepaw... Wanting to make the best out of this session with Tawnyshadow, Dawnpaw listened more attentively to Tawnyshadow's comments.

Suddenly, another mouse scent wafted through the air. Dawnpaw stayed still upon seeing the small signal the she-cat gave to keep still. She saw Tawnyshadow go into a hunting crouch and soundlessly killing the mouse easily and quickly. When Tawnyshadow padded back with the prey, Dawnpaw mewed, "That was amazing!" Suddenly, Dawnpaw smelt something that probably was vole.

Dawnpaw got into a hunting crouch, made sure her flank was not raised too high, her hindlegs were kept in, her tail off the ground, ears still, not making a single sound that might scare away the prey. She silently but quickly stalked the prey, extending her hindlegs, she pounced on the vole.

Dawnpaw managed to catch a vole, this time with much better stance then before. "Alright, that's all for hunting then," Tawnyshadow concluded, "We'll bury the catches to bring back later. For now, I want you to show me your battle skills. You can do a front paw strike and a dodge, right?" She got into a crouch again, facing Dawnpaw.

"Attack me," She commanded.
