It was hard to believe that Shrikestar had to see another of his loyal warriors retire. First Brackenwing, now Whisperear. It was tough to see members of his council unable to perform their duties, but he knew they had served WindClan well and to the best of their abilities. It was time for them to rest, as they deserved. "All cats old enough to run the moors gather beneath the Tallrock for a clan meeting!"

Whisperear was told about what would be coming next. They were sick in the medicine den for over two weeks now, with no sign of getting their strength back. It no longer seemed like they were at risk because of their health, but it was still hard to walk, which meant they could not hunt or patrol…or even go through the tunnels. Their dream of being a tunneler was dead before they even got a chance to try.
They pushed up from were they were resting at the entrance of the medicine den to get some sun. Their limbs were shaky, but they moved forward, taking a spot near the front as Shrikestar called the meeting.
Batsong walked close to Whisperears side. She had done everything she could to get Whisper healed again. And several times she was so scared she would lose them for good.
Despite her best efforts, Whisperear was not recovering to full strength as she had tried so hard to acheive. The decision to become elder was what Whisper had chosen and Batsong would be there for them every step of the way.
She respected their decision to do this. She just wished that she could have been a better med cat to allow them to live out their dreams of being a warrior and tunnel explorer longer.
She looked up to shrikestar ready for the ceromony to begin

Once the clan had gathered around the Tallrock, Shrikestar made his difficult announcement. "It is never easy to announce a retirement, but today is one of those days. Whisperear..." He turned his head to look at Whisperear, sitting at the front of the clan. "You have served this clan dutifully, and I hope you are able to go into retirement with no regrets over how you have contributed to WindClan. Both WindClan and StarClan honor you with the rest that you undoubtedly deserve."
Brackenwing's ear twitched as Shrikestar called the clan together for a meeting. She had an uncomfortable suspicion of what for, as she watched Whisperear rise to shaky paws, Brackenwing sighed quietly. Over two weeks of being stuck in the medicine den, two weeks of Batsong trying her hardest. Whisperear couldn't have wanted this, but much like Brackenwing's own retirement, it seemed the life of an active warrior was no longer feasible. The elder limped forward and sat, pain shooting through her back and hip as she moved, though she'd long since learned to be better at hiding it. Batsong had enough to worry about and she was here to support Whisperear as Shrikestar continued the ceremony.
Whisperear listened to their leader declare what they had already expected. They would never go running after prey again, never descend into the tunnels. The best they could hope for would be to leave camp to help tend to the graves, as elders often did. Perhaps they could get lucky enough to have a warrior escort them and Brackenwing to the fields as they planned to do weeks ago…but that felt like a dream that wouldn’t come to fruition either.
They bowed their head to their leader and replied, “Thank you, Shrikestar.” As much as they wanted to be able to take their elder status with no regrets, the honest truth was that they had a lot of regrets. It felt like they had not been able to succeed in anything they wanted to as a warrior, and here they were, still in their prime youth, and being considered an elder. It was just…frustrating.
They moved away now that the ceremony was over and caught sight of Brackenwing. They moved to her side and offered a thing smile as cats around them began to shuffle along. “I understand even more how you felt during your own ceremony now,” they meowed dryly. “But at least you won’t be lonely in that den anymore. We’ll both be stuck there now.”
