Sablestrike had been dreaming of this day, and it was finally here. Sunpaw had done well in his previous training sessions, leaving the warrior thoroughly surprised by the young cat's talent. There seemed to be nothing the apprentice couldn't do, and as much as Sablestrike hated to admit it, it was time to cut Sunpaw free. "Sunpaw," The warrior began. "there's something I've been wanting to do with you for a while now. You mentioned training with cats from other clans when you were captured, I'd like you to show me what you've learned." Sablestrike turned to face the apprentice. "I want you to spar with me. Consider this an assessment. If you can manage to defeat me then I'll tell Nightstar you're ready to become a warrior. If you can't, then you'll be stuck as an apprentice for a while longer." There was no emotion in the warrior's voice. While he knew Sunpaw would give this spar his all, Sablestrike wanted to give his apprentice an extra push. Tilting his head slightly, the warrior finished. "You have first strike." Let's see just how bad you want this.

Sunpaw dug his claws repeatedly into the mud as his mentor spoke. In and out, in and out. He tried to keep up his usual confident front, but inside he was nervous. How am I supposed to defeat him? And he’ll hold me back if I don’t? Determination set in across his features. He would win this.

Sunpaw launched himself at the black warrior with every ounce of strength his lithe body possessed.

Sablestrike was surprised at the power in his apprentice's strike, though he shouldn't have been. Sunpaw had proven himself a prodigy, anything less than this would have been disappointing. Sablestrike bit lightly at the back of his apprentice's neck before flinging Sunpaw backward. It was something only possible due to how thin the tom was. They would have to fix that.

Claws flexing, Sunpaw shook off the blow. He didn’t want Sablestrike to see the way it had knocked the wind out of him, or how his paws landed at weird angles. This was no time for weakness. Finding his footing again in an instant, he once again threw himself at his mentor. Only this time, the angle of the jump was different. Instead of slamming directly into his mentor, the slender cat shot beneath him to deliver a flurry of wild blows.
