Birdstar
The sky was dreary and gray, heavy snowflakes falling from above. The wind was gusting hard too, buffeting against Birdstar's thick fur, enough to make a small shiver briefly halt her movements. It really was poor weather, if it was cold enough to break through her dense coat. But however bad the weather might be, it wasn't bad enough to keep SkyClan away from work. A little snow and a breeze weren't going to deter Birdstar from leading her patrol. The excitement of getting back to work, of starting and maintaining practices, was enough to keep her warm anyhow.
"Juniperpaw, be careful climbing. The bark will be slippery from the snow and ice. Don't go too high, or too far." Birdstar focused on the little molly as she spoke before turning her attention to Spottedfrog. To the senior warrior, she only gave a nod too. Spottedfrog was older than her, and had more than enough experience to not need lecturing on safety. Still, to the both of them, "I know we're looking for weak branches, but try not to let any of them snap under you. Please." With that, she was gathering her weight and springing into the nearest tree. In the branches, even the lower ones, the wind felt sharper, harsher, and it made the limb she stood on rock with the force of it. Well, this'll be fun, she thought with a chuff of amusement as she moved over the boughs, searching for anything ready to snap.

The cold didn't bother Spottedfrog. It wasn't that she wasn't cold, oh, she definitely felt the chill, and the snowflakes that gathered upon her shoulders hadn't yet started to melt, but she knew they would. It was more that she was absolutely too darn stubborn to even acknowledge her discomfort, or show it to anyone else. To be frank, she thought it was a right foolish idea to be doing a search for dead branches in the middle of a snowstorm, but Spottedfrog wasn't the leader, and nor did she desire to be, so with begrudging acceptance she'd followed into the trees, keeping a close eye on the young apprentice, who was obviously less skilled in the trees than the older cats on the patrol.
When Birdstar spoke, Spottedfrog gave a simple flick of the ear in acknowledgement and moved away, suddenly too distracted to speak. Juniper, that was a name she hadn't heard in moons, and a sudden pang of longing deep in her chest made her pause. She didn't spend a lot (read: any) of her time in the nursery, and the kit's apprentice ceremony must have happened while she was out... so she'd missed it, until now.
Spottedfrog swallowed hard. She wondered if Juniperlight was still out there somewhere, alive and safe. She hoped he was. Her mentor had been a kind soul, too kind for the cruelty of this world. She missed him.
A gust of wind made the tuxedo she-cat dig her claws into the branch below, and she shook her head, clearing her mind of the memories. This wasn't the time for that. A quick glance up and over showed a thick limb, swaying with the wind, and moving too stiffly to be live wood. With expert precision, she climbed up, moving out on to the half of the limb that was still good. It was a large one, at least three fox lengths of which was no good. Spottedfrog frowned, glancing down to make sure there was nothing below her before creeping out to the border where good met rotten. Rearing up, she slammed her paws down on the latter. The first strike send only a flurry of snowflakes that had settled on the surrounding branches, and the second - crack! - the branch broke, but it was still hanging on. She reared again, and brought her paws down for a third time... and this time, the branch went down, tumbling and splintering before finally making it to the forest floor with a dull thud.

Juniperpaw couldn’t contain her excitement as she bounded behind Birdstar and Spottedfrog, attempting to be as careful as she could at the same time as jauntily and eagerly jumping and slamming into tree limbs. This was her first ever patrol, and while it was just to check the tree branches surrounding their territory the molly couldn’t help but jump into the opportunity. It all felt so warrior-like, and the responsibility made her giddy.
There was at least an attempt made to heed Birdstar’s advice on Juniperpaw’s end. She was usually a graceful she-cat, light and quick on her paws, but those skills didn’t seem to transfer over when she was in the air. Branches snapped and bent under her as she clumsily followed the two senior warriors— the fun of the whole situation was starting to sour. Juniperpaw couldn’t help but be a little apprehensive to check branches herself, watching Birdstar and Spottedfrog jump and paw at them with ferocity. She wasn’t nearly as strong or as nimble as they were— she could easily see herself making a wrong step and tumbling to the brush below. Yet, Juniperpaw wanted to prove herself and be helpful to her clan.
Following her leader’s lead, Juniperpaw made headway towards a thick tree branch to her side. It looked sturdy enough, but the leaves had started to die; Juniperpaw carefully tested its strength with a paw, and it bent but didn’t snap. Relieved, the apprentice leaped onto the branch with all her might, excitement starting to come back—
and the branch broke beneath her.
By sheer luck, Juniperpaw managed to grab ahold of another, sturdier branch before she fell to the ground, shaken and wide-eyed. Her back paws dangled in the air, writhing around in an attempt to climb back to safety. She had a good grip, but it wouldn’t last forever, and Juniperpaw was just an apprentice. ”Birdstar!” she squealed in fear, ”Spottedfrog! Help!”

Birdstar
Though a bit tedious, the work was easy enough. Smaller limbs gave way easily, splintering and dropping under her careful weight. The thicker ones took more effort to break– a loud snap drew her attention towards Spottedfrog, heavy paws separating a dead limb from the rest of its branches. Birdstar found herself repeating that same rearing process more than once, rising as carefully as he could to slam her weight onto the particularly stubborn limbs. Even if they tried to cling, the wood fractured and they went tumbling to the snow, landing with a paf and shower of white powder. It would be satisfying, if not for the bitter wind.
Clambering a little higher, Birdstar paused to look over her patrolmates before continuing with the work. Spottedfrog was doing fine, as she expected, and Juniperpaw... She spotted the ragdoll right as she sprang, wood cracking under her. Panic caught Birdstar's heart, terrified as the branch snap and Juniperpaw tumbled briefly with it. She could move fast, rush down from the tree and to her side– but she wouldn't be able to reach the ground in time to catch her. Luckily, Juniperpaw had caught herself against another branch as she dropped, claws fastened to the bark as her hind legs wheeled uselessly in the air. Fear left her limbs and, without looking for the more senior warrior accompanying them, Birdstar scrambled across branches to reach the young molly.
The branch she landed on was firm. It wobbled slightly when her weight dropped onto it, but it was healthy and strong, not at risk of snapping. As carefully as she could, Birdstar crept across the branch, leaning over Juniperpaw. Worry was written clear across her features. "You're okay, you're alright. I've got you," she murmured softly as she bent down, sinking her teeth as gently as she could into the apprentice's scruff. The ragdoll held more weight than she'd expected, and the weather didn't help, relentless as it whipped against them. Still, she tugged Juniperpaw upright, but she still held on, afraid that if she let go Juniperpaw would fall anyway.

Before she was able to seek out another branch, Spottedfrog heard the crack, and though initially she just assumed one of the others had taken one down, the shriek that emanated from Juniperpaw's mouth said otherwise. Spottedfrog's head snapped up, her hackles raising as her eyes locked on to the apprentice just in time to watch her slam into a lower branch, barely holding on.
Her paws moved more quickly than her mind did, panic moving aside for instinct to take over. Spottedfrog was good in the trees - much better than some despite her half-ShadowClan heritage. She leapt from branch to branch, occasionally glancing up to take stock of the situation. It looked like Birdstar had her, but just in case... she moved lower in the tree, positioning herself beneath Juniperpaw but several fox lengths apart. If she did somehow start to fall again, at least she'd probably be able to slow her fall.

Juniperpaw tried to focus on her breathing, which was nowhere near as helpful as she needed it to be. Her heart beat wildly in her ears, fluffy chest heaving cold, painful breaths— the air had to be thinner, up there in the trees. For a while, it was all she could think about, how sharp her chest panged and how her back paws still hung slightly off of the branch.
Spottedfrog watched her silently from below, Birdstar’s teeth firm on her scruff, yet Juniperpaw didn’t feel protected. All her blue eyes could do was stare frightfully down below, at the branch that once held her weight but now lay dozens of feet below, broken clean in half from the force of the fall.
That could have been Juniperpaw’s back, for all she knew— she could have died!
Snapping back to reality, stomach queasy, Juniperpaw looked first at Spottedfrog and then at Birdstar— still holding on, despite Juniperpaw being safe on a sturdier branch. ”I’m okay, Mum, you can let go now.” She mewed to Birdstar under her breath, the skeleton of a smile creeping up across her face. ”That was really fast— I can see why you’re leader!”
The ragdoll molly wriggled her way free from Birdstar’s grasp, pawsteps a little unsure now as they found purchase alone on the tree branch. ”Let's continue! Don’t worry about me!”
