Wolfblossom oculdn't help but feel the day was turning out rather gloomy, as the sun remained stubbornly hidden behind cloudcover that seemed to promise more snow. She'd taken her sister and their apprentices (well, former apprentice, in Thornstalker's case) out for a patrol. Calling it a border patrol sounded strange, so she'd just left it at that. But Wolfblossom wanted to find new twoleg traps before their hunting patrols were their unsuspecting victims, and it gave them all an excuse to get out of their makeshift camp and stretch a bit. The cold was enough to sting her ears and nose as they walked, snow crunching softly under their paws.
"Maybe we'll do a bit of hunting on the way back. It looks like it'll snow again." Wolfblossom mewed, to no cat in particular. She glanced up as a bird took flight from a branch above, claws itching to catch it. The next one they saw... She'd catch that one, surely.
For now, they had to remain alert, and her ears twitched at a faint noise somewhere up ahead. "Did you hear that?" She asked her patrolmates quietly, eyes narrowing as she tried to pinpoint from where she'd heard it. Perhaps she was just being paranoid, but every crack and snap of twigs made her think of the twolegs and their traps.

Rainpaw
Fourtrees
Rainpaw shivered as the cold breeze passed over the patrol, instinctively shifting a little closer to Birdchaser in search of warmth. He was not a fan of how cold the weather has turned as of late, hating the feeling of frost and snow underneath his paws and cursing his smaller size. He looked forward to seeing Newleaf. Maybe by then, things would have gone back to normal, and he wouldn't be scanning the bushes, paranoidly checking for signs of those cursed twoleg traps. Maybe by then, he wouldn't be hoping to spot black and white fur in every crevice, and instead Crookedpaw would be by his side.
Shaking his head to clear it of his gloomy thoughts, Rainpaw refocused as Wolfblossom spoke. His ear flicked at the mention of it snowing again. He really hoped not. He nodded at Wolfblossom's words about hunting. Maybe they could find a few nice birds.
Rainpaw stiffened up as Wolfblossom tensed, and he scanned the underbrush for the source of the sound that had caught her attention. "Yes ma'am," He said softly, straining to hear the sound again. "I'm not sure what it was." He frowned in concentration. It didn't sound quite like twolegs, but he wasn't about to make that assumption. His muscles tensed further as he prepared for the worst, mind flipping through possibilities.

Juniper dared another wobbly step, frozen leaves and frosted-over earth crunching beneath her small paws. She had been alone for what felt like eons now, treading the line between freezing and starving, and only just now had she ever gotten close enough to some actual food. She had no hunting skills, could hardly even walk when her mother had left her, but that did nothing to stop her from stalking after a flittering sparrow. Her gait was uneven and sloppy, her pawsteps loud when they should be silent, but the sparrow didn’t seem to pay the kit any mind, picking at the frozen dirt and grass with its beak. It was distracted, Juniper had the perfect opportunity, shivering from the cold but hunched into a primitive, kitten pounce—
The sparrow cocked its head to pawsteps in the frost, and took off in a frightened flurry. Those pawsteps did not belong to Juniper.
The disappointment of yet another night scrounging through twoleg trash was shot through with terror— Juniper was looking to finally eat, not get eaten herself! The pawsteps grew closer, thundering in the kit's ears now. Juniper was just a kit, too clumsy to run and hide and too small and frail to fight; this was the end of the line, wasn’t it? Her mother had dropped her off on twoleg territory, sick and weary and hoping for her daughter to find warmth, food and shelter, but Juniper had been stupid and hid in the forest instead, starving and cold and looking for her mother.
She was going to die, and it was all because of how stupid she was! All she could do now was cower where she was, out in the open on the grass, and whimper to herself.

Thornstalker followed silently behind Wolfblossom, blue eyes scanning the territory as they walked, making note of any changes or spots for potential traps they couldn't exactly go explore yet. She couldn't risk going off on her own considering that if she did, and got stuck.. Well.. She didn't want to think what would happen. She wasn't sure who would get to her first if she got stuck..
The small pale she-cat paused when the others did, ears perked forward at the mention of a sound. It wasn't a heavy thudding like twolegs normally made.. Was there an injured animal? Was that a whimper..? "Whatever it is I don't think its a threat..." The small warrior pushed forward passing the other cats on the patrol, blue eyes settling upon the small shivering form. Confusion settled on Thornstalker's face.. "Its a kit.." She called out slightly to the others. She wasn't sure what to do, did she get closer? The kit was clearly scared. "Hey.. Its okay." She told the small bundle, hoping that maybe that would help, but obviously she wasn't the best at this.

Birdchaser
Their patrol had been quiet, made of mostly the sounds of the forest around them, muted by snow, and the occasional pop or crack of twoleg activity. The noises always made Birdchaser startle a little, but for now, they seemed preoccupied with some other end of the forest. As long as it wasn't SkyClan being bothered, she didn't mind. Her ears twitched forward when her sister spoke, noting the bird flapping away. It was a good idea, even if weariness was starting to weigh down her paws. Best to hunt now, before the snow frightened or buried all the prey; and better yet to keep herself moving.
A stiff wind blew through the group, carrying with it a bitter chill– and soft, sad noises. Flicking her tail to acknowledge Rainpaw as he moved closer, Birdchaser stepped away to stand in front of him. Thornstalker pushed forward, though she didn't get far before her paws stopped again. The she-cat's words sent a small pang through Birdchaser's heart; for a moment, she lingered, leaning just closer to Rainpaw's side, before moving to join Thornstalker's. The poor thing looked miserable, pressed to the grass and shaking hard– from fear or the cold, hard to tell. Likely, both. Folding her legs to lower herself to the kit's height, she whispered, "Are you lost? Is your family waiting for you?" The familiarity of the words, the situation itself, sent a pang through Birdchaser's chest, especially knowing Rainpaw stood not far away from this echo of his early days.

Rainpaw had indeed heard the noise too, and Thornstalker was then pushing forward. Wolfblossom smiled at that, her former apprentice had a good head on her shoulders, but Thornstalker's call had Wolfblossom stiffening slightly. A kit?? Alone in the forest, in the middle of leafbare? Wolfblossom's pale gaze swept over their surroundings, but there were no signs of other cats. No scents, either, but for the kit and her own clanmates. "Only the one around here, far as I can tell." She said softly to her clanmates.
"Hey there," Wolfblossom mewed softly. It's not safe to be out here alone, she might've said, but one look at the kit's miserable expression told Wolfblossom she had figured that out already. Her heart sank at the realization. Poor thing, no kit should've had to be out alone like this. Predators, the twolegs... The cold and snow was a danger too. Birdchaser asked about family, and Wolfblossom closed her eyes briefly. "We can keep you safe until we find them-" If the kit had wandered off and gotten lost, she would surely have been missed by now, and it would explain the lack of scents of other cats around here. She had a bad feeling though. Rainpaw and Creampaw were the first cats to come to mind, and one of them was standing right next to her. Somehow, she didn't think her offer would have objections from her own clanmates, though rightfully it was Birdchaser's to make. Wolfblossom could not sit idly by and not attempt to help, however.
"What's your name, little one?" She asked, gentling her tone as she refocused on the kit that was much too young to be out here, "I'm Wolfblossom, that's Birdchaser." She motioned to her sister.

Rainpaw
Fourtrees
A kit? Rainpaw's shoulders stiffened. For a moment, his mind drifted back to his own situation, moons prior now. He thought of huddling underneath a bush as rain poured down, of how utterly alone he had felt. He shook the thoughts off quickly, forcing his mind to refocus on the situation at hand. Still, his heart ached, and he felt an immediate, startling surge of protectiveness when he moved a few pawsteps closer and actually saw the little kit, crouched low on the ground with her ears laid back. Another image popped unbidden into his mind as he took in her apperance, one of his long-gone siblings, and that surge of protectiveness grew.
Birdchaser leaned closer to him for a moment before shifting forward, and Rainpaw responded in kind, tail flicking over her side briefly as they took in the achingly familiar situation. There was no pounding rain, but there were dangers abound, from twolegs to predators to the biting cold. This was no place for one as young as this little scrap of fur.
He did not move any closer, not wanting to crowd the poor creature. He instead shifted to the side so that he was easily in sight, rather than hidden behind Wolfblossom and Birdchaser's fluff. He remembered as vividly as if it was yesterday how overwhelming it was when he first met his now-beloved clanmates. "I'm Rainpaw," He spoke up softly. "You're safe with us. No one's going to hurt you." There were a dozen other things he could've said, but he figured it would be better for the older warriors to lead the situation. Still, unspoken words lingered on his tongue, and the tension of such unfamiliar and strong emotions made him stiff. He wanted to help. He knew that Wolfblossom had already checked, but still, he found himself checking their surroundings for any sign that this poor kit had not been left all on her own as he had.

Frozen someone halfway between astonished and relieved, Juniper’s hackles slowly lowered and her ears slowly raised. These unfamiliar, strange-smelling cats seemed to surround the kit from all sides, tall as trees and just as imposing, but instead of gnashing teeth out of their mouths came kind words of comfort. Worried eyes flickered to and from her pelt and the surrounding forest— Juniper was immediately drawn to the mismatched ones of the smallest stranger, who seemed a little to familiar for her liking. She knew for a fact that she had never seen him before, but there was some sort of air about him, something about the look he was giving her that felt warm. Warmer than the others.
It was hard to focus on one question at once, with how fast her heart was racing, but Juniper managed to spit out a wobbly whisper of her name, followed by a short ”I’m looking for my mother, but I don’t think she wants to be found.”
It came crashing down on her then, the situation she was in. Her mother was halfway to death’s door when she had left her, licked her head and told Juniper to never forget that she loved her before wandering off back into the frosted wood. She could barely get the words out without a cough, smile weak and pained. Was she even alive for Juniper to find? Was Juniper just going to wander through the snow and cold until she dropped dead, starving? She needed someone to look out for her, keep her alive until she could learn how to do it herself, but it was just dawning on Juniper that at this point, that cat may never come if she stayed out in the forest. Juniper was alone.
”Did you say I could stay with you? she asked weakly, big blue eyes focused on the two gray and white she-cats before her, no doubt sisters. ”Can I please? I’m cold.”
