Poppyshine
As promised, Poppyshine went with Sandyshell on an herb hunt. She was still so proud of her daughter for earning her full name, and Poppyshine found herself smiling goofily every time she looked at her daughter. She tried not to express it too much so as to not embarrass Sandyshell, but she truly hoped that her daughter knew how giddy it made her.
“I only know a handful of herbs,” Poppyshine explained as they headed out into their territory. “Cloverheart taught me some several moons back. But you will know better than I do. What herbs should I keep an eye out for?”

Sandyshell
It felt as if only a week ago that the Camp had flooded, and her Clan had fled. Like only a week ago she helped Dovesight frantically carry as many herbs as she could out of the rising water’s grasp. All of those herbs had either run out or been abandoned when they had to flee a second time. She hoped she wouldn’t have to run away a third time. Having returned to the Medicine Den, which was now solely hers, she was briefly relieved not all had washed away. But most of the surviving leaves and flowers had grown old and wilted due to abandonment and the cold. There was only a small percentage she could keep.
And so, this stressful absence of supplies forced her to work hard and replenish it. Thankfully this was her favorite part of the job. And her mother’s company made it all the better, also making Sandyshell less anxious. “Anything is useful,” she replied to the molly who shared her grassy eyes and small stature, “After all the moving we barely have any left, but the shelves are looking fuller because of you. Thank you for all your help recently.” Sandyshell smiled at her, more genuinely than the polite smile she left for others. She noticed her mother's matching grin. Despite all the ruin and fear that had stormed over their lives recently, Poppyshine was still glowing, just happy to help her daughter. I guess it’s in the name, she thought fondly.
Sandyshell began to wonder about her own name, and why Poppyshine had chosen it. She asked herself what shells meant to her. Shells are beautiful and my way of showing love... was that what Mama meant by it? A rosey shade dappled her cheeks. The medicine cat softly grinned and looked over to the dilute calico. “Grab anything you can recognize, including tools like moss and cobwebs. You can find most things near the river, but herbs like catchweed, chervil, and goldenrod will be further away in dry soil. I'm heading for the water. Feel free to follow or instead cover more ground.”
The sandy molly padded down to the similarly sandy riverbank, scanning the foliage as she went along. Almost immediately she caught sight of the distinctive blue stars that belonged to the fuzzy-leafed plant called borage. Commonly used for easing a variety of things like fevers, bellyaches, and breathing. Also known for helping queens feed their young, but with the air growing colder and colder she doubted many litters would be arriving soon. Sandyshell dug at the bottom of the stalk, clearing out the damp soil before pulling out the roots. This one wasn’t the tallest stalk due to the oncoming season, so carrying it wasn’t a hassle. Thankfully bigger batches of borage grew nearby, preparing for her to collect another day.
[Sandyshell found Borage!] [There is one dry-area herb in each row.]

Poppyshine
Poppyshine nodded and began looking around for the herbs. She always loved spending time with Sandyshell, and she grateful that she could help her daughter replenish the medicine den. Things had started to settle into something almost normal again. There was still a lot on her mind most days, usually her thoughts lingering with Rowanpaw or Olivepaw or Reedpaw…her three kits who had not yet earned their warrior names, and they were the ones who had been lost or taken by the twolegs. She hoped that they were alright, and that they would return to her. She also hoped that no more tragedy would strike their clan. It seemed that they were unable to get back onto their feet, no matter how hard they tried.
She shook the thoughts from her mind and focused again. Herbs now, worries later. She sniffed along the ground, trying to catch any familiar scent like the ones Cloverheart had shown her before her passing. While she did not find one from that day, her eyes did catch on some bright yellow leaves. Her mind jumped to marigold as Cloverheart had once taught her, but these looked different. They were very tiny yellow flowers that she recognized from the medicine den, although she could not place what herb they were. Poppyshine chewed at the base of the plant, snapping off several parts into her mouth that she carried with her back towards Sandyshell.
With her mouth full of the plant, she meowed, “I believe this is something you use? I don’t think I know the name for it though. What do you use this for?”

Sandyshell
Sandyshell turned to the deputy, who held a ripe herb in her maw. “Good find!” she exclaimed praisefully while examining the sun-yellow flowers, “That’s goldenrod. Not too common here. It helps wounds and infection, so it’s one of my favorites!”
She glanced around her. An idea sparked as she settled on the river. “Hey,” she mewed brightly after turning to Poppyshine with hopeful eyes, “Maybe we could bring some fish back home as well?” Sandyshell didn't care much for catching fish, rather she struggled with a craving to swim with them. If not for her mother's fear of the activity she would have simply suggested it outright. But instead, she offered something not as water-inclusive. Hopefully, Poppyshine felt up to it.

Poppyshine
Poppyshine was not the most comfortable cat around water. The irony of her being a RiverClan cat, the deputy no less, was never lost on her. However, she did her best not to let it get in the way much of spending time with her family near the river. Sandyshell and Minksplash both especially loved the water, and so Poppyshine was not going to be one who denied them their fun.
“That’s a good idea,” she purred. “Herbs and fish would both be great catches to bring back to the clan.” She adjusted her path so they could head closer to the river. It was not long before it came into view. When they were close enough, Poppyshine set the goldenrod down gingerly atop the snow and approached the water. “Be careful if you get in. The water gets very cold in leafbare, and it can be hard to swim.”
