Dayquill

 
It was exceedingly awkward, and obvious he feared, that Dayquill had been lurking around the edges of WindClan's gathering. He was looking for a reason to spend time with Blazefang, but there was no excuse he could come up with that seemed even halfway reasonable. Still, it didn't stop him from trying. Today, he'd had a new idea: he would invite some of WindClan's warriors to come hunting with him. It would be a good morale booster, and a way to bring some unity to the distant Clans, and... whatever.

Though he'd been hoping the pretty ginger molly would be joining him, it seemed most of WindClan's warriors were occupied. The only one that joined him– whether through her own eagerness or if she'd been pushed, he couldn't tell –was the spotted silver cat from the last Gathering. He didn't remember her name, if she'd said it, but he did remember that she'd made fun of him for being so small. Dayquill's ears lowered a little, but he put on a sheepish smile as he clambered the rise out of the clearing. "Ever, uh, get any practice hunting between trees before?"

The molly beside him was almost... studying him? The weirdly fixed looks she kept passing his way made Dayquill shuffle a little on his paws, feeling a bit uncomfortable. She'd been weird at the Gathering they'd spoken at, too. Maybe this was just par for the course with her. The friend she'd been with had seemed pretty used to it, if that meant anything. Dayquill wasn't, though. Stiffly, he cleared his throat, shuffling a little bit ahead. He was just a little intent on beating her to any of the prey out, that was all.

And his jaw was parting too, taking in the frozen scents of the world around him when she responded to his offer of small talk. Immediately, Dayquill stopped and looked at her. He blinked. Then blinked again. And slowly sputtered out, "Oh, Blazefang was your mentor?" What an interesting part of that sentence to choose to respond to. As if it would help his case at all, the corners of his maw pulled back in a tight, awkward smile. This must have been Silverpaw then... Silver- Silver– wing! Thank the stars he remembered. Shrugging mildly, h ducked his head and padded along. This time, he did breathe in, hoping to catch the scent of something. It would at least give him something to focus on rather than how quickly this interaction could go south.

And luckily, he caught it. A rabbit had hopped all the way out to Fourtrees; probably just as shaken up and seeking new shelter where the Clans had gone. "I mean, it's not, uh– she's just a good friend, is all. We chat at Gatherings, she's really nice, and... She's nice. Good company." Hopefully that was enough to satiate Silverwing's curiosity. He was allowed to have friends from another Clan afterall, even if they were teetering on the verge of not-just-friends. But that didn't matter: he was focused on not blabbering sensitive information like he had to that RiverClanner, and now he'd spotted his quarry. It was fat for the season, a ball of dusty fur tearing out grasses between the roots of a tree. Dayquill stooped low, dropping into that familiar crouch, and crept just a few paces forward, and stalled... and stalled almost a second too long. The rabbit's ears turned towards him, and it briefly stopped its incessant chewing. The thought of losing it frightened him into action, and he rushed forward. It was a clumsy pounce, and the rabbit squealed quite a bit before he could nip its neck, but he'd caught it. That's what mattered. Tail flagging, he lifted his catch by the nape and turned back towards Silverwing. "I guess my time with Blazefang is paying off, huh? Not just WindClan that can catch rabbits."
