one of a kind [solo]

Thalia liked the deeper marsh of ShadowClan's territory, and was eager to return to it even despite the danger. She had lived with them for long enough to know the hidden paths, having walked them many times in search of herbs and flowers. Today her goal was a little different, though she was still keeping an eye out for the last of the season's flowers; soon they would wither and wilt, and she wanted to save as many as she could from such a fate.

She wanted to hunt. To prove that she could hunt, really- not to the Clan, who she knew valued her for the things she could provide, but to herself. She had always struggled with it, recalling the times she'd chased a rabbit on WindClan's moor only to realize it was a fellow Asylum cat who happened to be wearing their pelt.

A rare sight greeted her eyes, and one that oddly reflected her earlier thoughts: a rabbit, one that certainly wasn't an Asylum scout (not when they were almost all long gone, and she was nowhere near any clan's border anyhow). It was more instinct than conscious thought that sent her chasing after it, careful as she was to follow the stones beneath her paws. Her caution was her downfall, however, as the rabbit managed to escape to a space she couldn't reach.

Silently, she cursed herself for missing the catch- but she wasn't stupid enough to venture off the path tonight, and certainly not without another cat to pull her back if she slipped.

Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, she turned her sights to something more ShadowClan-oriented- a frog, which hopped happily through the marsh with no regard for the depth beneath its webbed feet. It was a much more reasonable goal, she supposed- rabbits were ill-suited to the marsh, and Thalia was simply ill-suited to catching them. Admittedly, she was ill-suited to catching anything, but this was at least a goal she could potentially reach.

Waiting for the frog to cross before her, giving her a window to safely pounce, she held perfectly still. Many nights of guarding and sentry duty had prepared her for that task, if nothing else.

It was almost insultingly easy, compared to her usual hunting endeavors, how the frog hopped into reach and was immediately swept into her paws for what was possibly the easiest kill of her life.

This method of waiting for the prey to come to her was possibly something better suited to her skillset, so Thalia settled comfortably into her position and waited for something else to approach. The rabbit from earlier had, for some reason unknown to her, made a return- what had brought it to this part of ShadowClan's territory in the first place she would never know, as she couldn't understand them.

Even this easy window would be difficult for catching a rabbit unless it opted to stop right in front of her, as they were swift-moving creatures even when they weren't in range of a warrior on the hunt. And as expected, another easy miss passed her by as the rabbit hopped into the distance and well out of reach.

Thalia looked sadly at her frog, and for a moment considered stopping there- she could, at least, say she made an honest effort. And, honestly, one catch was one catch more than she had expected to leave with. But another glance at the vanishing rabbit served as motivation, and she fell back into a waiting crouch.

The next piece of prey that crossed her path was a bird, a decently round thing with brown feathers. It moved slowly across the marsh- it must not have noticed she was there at all until it was far too late, and she managed to kill it with ease.

Two more pieces of prey than she had expected, then. She felt a bit more confident after that.

So caught up in her sudden burst of confidence, Thalia nearly missed the approach of a raccoon. Well, actually, she did miss its approach- a swift swipe to her back caught her attention quite thoroughly, however, as she swerved to face it. She didn't care for fighting when it wasn't necessary, but being attacked by a raccoon- something that simply couldn't be reasoned with the way even enemy cats sometimes could- was something she deemed a necessary situation.

As Thalia's leaping strike landed its mark, she considered her options. And as she was considering her options- namely, a myriad of ways to dispose of the raccoon that was attacking her- it decided, quite rudely, to attack her again while she was thinking. Another swift swipe that stung (she would have to remember to drop by the medicine den after this), enough to grab her attention.

She managed to catch it off-guard, letting it think for a moment it had bested her, before using that advantage to overwhelm it. She was pretty sure it would be a bit dazed for at least a few moments after her assault- plenty of time to finish this.

When she was sure that she could strike without risking retaliation, she lashed out at it in a flurry of slashes from sharp claws- when she was through, she had ensured that it wouldn't bother any ShadowClan cats again. In fact, she was so thorough in her assault that she was quite sure it wouldn't be bothering anyone at all ever again.

For a moment she thought about bringing it back to camp (she felt that the rebuilding efforts could do with some soft things to line the nests), but then looked back at her bird and her frog. Besides, the raccoon was soaked from the marsh, so its fur wouldn't have made particularly good lining anyway.

For now, she gathered the prey she'd caught and started back to camp- it would probably be a good idea to let Nightstar and Leopardsun know that there had been an attack, and she needed to see Fuzzybelly about her own minor injuries before she let herself forget.
