stronger together [open hunting]

Scorchtalon was up early that morning, stumbling out of his nest with a yawn just as the first rays of sunshine began to awaken the sleepy clan. He let the sunlight warm his pelt as he meticulously groomed scraps of moss from his striped ginger fur. The fresh-kill pile was stocked as well as it could be on a sunny greenleaf morning, but Scorchtalon decided he’d lead a hunting patrol, just to make sure the clan was well fed for the chilly moons ahead. Soon it would be leaf-fall, and leaf bare would come shortly after. He remembered all too well the biting chill that had swept over the moor when he was younger, and even more so the gnawing, often painful hunger that came with the shortage of prey. He finished up his grooming, padding off toward the entrance with a quick call to his clanmates.

”Anyone up for a hunting patrol?”

He sat near the entrance, staring out onto the moor as he waited.

Batsong had finished her routine checkup on the elders, queens and kits and everything was going smoothly. She had the med den well stalked with herbs and had made sure everyone was well.

Hearing the call for a hunt her ears perked up… she hadn’t been on a normal hunt in a long while. She was pretty good at it back when she was a warrior but that was a hit ago. She recognized the voice to be her good friend and so she decided to join. Walking over to him she gave him a grin. I’ll go if you don’t mind. Might be a little rusty but I’ll do my best she purred. Her stutter had gotten so much better after her speech lessons with stumpytoad the elder.

Flutterpetal shook out his pelt, walking up at the summons for a patrol. Lately, he'd been spending a lot more time sitting in camp, but it seemed to only be worsening the bubbling feelings inside of him. He'd feel a lot better out on the moors, running through the grass under the open sky... just thinking about it, he felt a little better already. A soft smile on his face, he joined Scorchtalon and-- Batsong, who wanted to hunt?-- with a small nod to each. "I'll go," he offered.

Scorchtalon purred at the sight of his friend, welcoming her with a wave of his tail.

"It never hurts to practice!" He said cheerfully, nudging her shoulder affectionately with his own. He nodded as Flutterpetal approached, giving the younger warrior a warm welcome.

"We'll be glad to have you." He said, almost beginning to feel like his old self for the first time in a while. He waited a few more moments to see if anyone else would join, then led his two companions out of camp with a flick of his tail. He trotted through the tall grass, humming quietly to himself as he went. Before long, a gust of wind brought a tantalizing scent, and Scorchtalon quickly split off from the patrol to investigate. It led him to a small rabbit burrow, hidden on the side of a rounded hill. He could just make out the quiet scuffling noises of prey inside, and his eyes lit up with hunger at the thought.

He concealed himself among the heather nearby, but he didn’t have long to wait before the creature was venturing out. In a blur of orange fur, he sprang forward, his claws extended. He was barely a whisker away from snagging it when the rabbit turned and fled, letting out a shriek of terror as it disappeared back into the burrow.

Batsong went along with her hunting patrol. She was eager to get back out and try her luck at this again, it had been some time since she had joined a hunting patrol.  The warrior trained med cat wondered if she would be able to catch anything.  She hoped her skills had not been all forgotten.

Futterpetal came over to join them and she gave the tom a happy welcome purr, he had been interested in some herbs earlier back when he was an apprentice, hmm perhaps she could show him some when they were out and about if the opportunity should arise. She knew that he liked flowers alot, maybe she could show him some usuful flowers that also were herbs, it was always good to have multiple cats have a general knowledge of herbs after all.

She followed after her life-long friend Scorchtalon as he led the patrol along.  She held her breath and watched eagerly as her clanmate was sneaking up on a rabbit nest/burrow.  She sighed as the rabbit barely got away.

"Good try, youll get the next one for sure" she purred quietly.  She split off a little from her clanmates but not super far as she searched around the area for other things around.

As she went along, she got that uncomfortable feeling that something bad was going to happen, she couldnt sense what it was or why she felt this way, but every instinct screamed at her to use caution.  She sniffed around... she couldnt scent any danger.  Stopping and taking a deep breath she tried to force herself to relax, it was probably nothing, just her getting worked up over nothing, right?

Well regardless it felt like something was just off, like she knew something mysterious and evil was coming for the clan but what it was or when it would arrive was hidden from her.  A lurking feeling that trouble and evil was coming.

Shaking her head she forced herself onwards, she was going to focus on the hunt sure that it was her just being overly nervous.

Squinting out over the hilly landscape, she spotted another rabbit not far from them all and she signaled with her tail she was gonna go for it.

Crouching she closed the distance as much as she could before leaping out at it.

As she ran toward the rabbit. Lurking under some rocks between the cat and prey lay a waiting opportunist.  Its forked tongue flashing in and out, it had originally wanted to also get that bunny.  Now, it would have 2 meals one for now and one for later perhaps.

Coiling up it waited until Batsong was at the best and most vulnerable spot.  With a loud hiss it sprung out from its coil and with fangs sunk into Batsongs front paw as she passed tripping her up as it clamped down on her paw.

Batsong was totally caught off gaurd as the venomus snake latched onto her.  With a shreik she recoiled away flinging the snake back, but she had already been bit.

Hissing she could hear her heart racing and her body full of adreneline. Her paw stung as she lashed back at the aggressive snake.

Batsong's paws landed harmlessly beside the snake as it weaved back and forth dodging. Batsong could tell that this snake was venomus and her paw was starting to go numb where she was bitten, its bright colors flashed in the sun as a warning of its deadly nature.

The snake danced back and forth as it closed the distance between itself and Batsong as its back part began coiling again to launch itself again. Batsong knew that trying to run now would just result in it catching her tail or back legs she did her best to keep it at bay while she could try to hit it again.

Flutterpetal nodded back to Scorchtalon and Batsong, then they headed out into the territory. It was a beautiful day. Leaf-fall had begun to ripen the moor grasses from a soft green to a brittle yellow, and the sun's heat was diluted by a cool breeze that rustled through them. As always, he loved the WindClan area. Every second he spent out on the territory was a good one. Or so he thought, anyway. When they got far enough out, everyone began hunting, which is when things went wrong very quickly. First, Scorchtalon missed his catch, which caused Flutterpetal to frown in sympathy. Then, from about a fox-length away, they both heard a shriek. Apparently, Batsong had found a snake in the grass, and was now fighting it.

Flutterpetal hissed when he saw the snake, glimmering in the sun after striking at the medicine cat. "Batsong, are you okay?" He darted up to them, keeping his eyes on the snake the whole time. It moved sinuously, and dodged Batsong's blow almost effortlessly. He unsheathed his claws and tried to strike at it from behind, but it sensed his approach and slithered out of the way, flickering its tongue dangerously. Flutterpetal's heart was beating fast. This was dangerous... he could get hurt. Batsong was already hurt. Still, he placed himself between the medicine cat and the snake. "Get behind me. I don't want the snake to bite you again."
