Defend yourself

Sprucebark had been very unlucky it felt like every time he was out and about on hunting patrols he got attacked by angry predators who liked to bite, scratch or do other nasty mean things to the poor fellow.

Brookstone had done a good job training him in fighting but even so, he felt like he was constantly getting hurt and ill prepared for the dangers that waited in the forest outside the walls of camp.

He had told his mum Poppyshine (as he was always very open especially to her about his feelings) about this. He explained that he wanted more practice so that he could hold his own better. Of course he also knew about the rule of having another warrior with him when he went out but all the same, he wanted more practice in his abilities. It was decided that Sprucebark and his aunt Kitespring would pracitce together and Poppyshine would come along as well to keep eye out for any potential predators and also when the practice was over she could give pointers to both her warriors and such.


Sprucebark walked along eagerly with his mum and aunt to the training spot where they were gonna have the practice round. He was a good young warrior and he cared alot about his family and clan.

Once they reached the spot he turned to face his practice training partner for the day. Smiling happily he purred sofly "Ready Auntie Kite?" he asked her, it was proper to make sure opponents were ready and he was a proper fellow of course.

When Poppyshine asked Kitespring to potentially spar with Sprucebark, she was hesitant. She didn't think she was that good of a fighter (she barely survived the battle against the Dark Forest), but she also worried about going too rough and hurting the young warrior, who had already found himself in fights with predators way too often. But Poppyshine seemed to trust her enough to spar with her son, so Kitespring eventually said yes.

When was the last time she sparred with another cat? It wasn't something she usually did. The last time... was it the apprentice games, when she sparred with Dovesight? Stars, that was a long time ago. She, Poppyshine, and Dovesight were all apprentices back then, living under the careful watch of the Dark Forest. She remembered when Poppyshine helped her up back then after she tripped and fell into the water. It was the first day she started to like her. Like, she was always attractive, but she was so nice too. After then, she seemed to always have a crush on her. It waxed and waned at times, like the moon, but unlike the moon it was-

SPLASH.

Her paw suddenly getting drenched by water, the russet-furred she-cat yelped, jumping back. It was just a puddle. Nothing to get worked up about. Still... I have to really watch where I'm going.

Stepping into the chosen training spot with Poppyshine and Sprucebark, Kitespring gazed around at it. It seemed open enough so that neither cat would trip and injure themselves, and she didn't think any predator would feel comfortable attacking three fully-grown cats in open space. When Sprucebark asked if she was ready, the warrior nodded. "I'm ready whenever you are," she said. Honestly, she felt uncomfortable throwing the first blow, so she waited for Sprucebark to make the first move.

Sprucebark gave a smile and nod to Poppyshine for the good luck for them both. He wondered how he should go about starting this off. His aunt had been a warrior for longer than him and had more fighting experience too ... maybe he should try and suprise her somehow out of the opening? If he was gonna win he probably had to play a bit risky.

He leapt forward at her and managed to catch her tail. Tugging he tried to throw her off balance so that he could maybe get an early lead. He was extra careful not to actually hurt his auntie as this was just practice after all.

Kitespring smiled at Poppyshine, giving her a curt not just like Sprucebark did. Turning back to her sparring partner, she yelped in surprise when he pulled on her tail. "Ow!" she said reflexively, turning back to Sprucebark. "That was pretty good!" The she-cat awkwardly slowed down her paws to a halt. "I think I... probably don't attack now. To simulate the advantage you'd get for actually pulling my tail as hard as you could. I appreciate you not doing that, though."

Kitespring is stunned.

Sprucepaw grinned at his aunt and gave a little nod before jumping at her carefully but enough to simulate an actual battle.

Being very careful to keep his claws sheathed so that he would not hurt his aunt he smacked at her while she still had the stun effect.
