First Day on the Job 2: The Next Generation

Blazefang’s heart leapt a bit as she padded over to her apprentice. “You ready, Silverpaw?” she asked. “I figured we’d do some hunting. Let’s go, I’ll show you some moves!” Finally, she had an apprentice of her own! Blazefang wished her sister and Specklepaw could be here too with apprentices of their own, but she knew they were watching from StarClan.

Silverpaw hadn't been able to get much sleep. She had been one of the first to rise, and had not been able to fall asleep again. Her heart had pounded harder than it ever had the day before, but today, it felt close to bursting. Today was gonna be her first day as an apprentice. Unable to calm herself, Silverpaw had taken at place close to the camp opening. Time seemed to pass excruciatingly slowly, but as she saw Blazefang approach she couldn't help but run up to meet her. "Yes!" she had exclaimed before Blazefang completed her first question, practically bursting out of her fur. "What are we going to hunt first"

Blazefang wasn’t exactly an early riser, but she’d tried to be up and presentable this morning. Good thing too, as her apprentice was already at the entrance to camp! The warrior chuckled a bit at Silverpaw’s enthusiasm. Where had she seen that before? “Okay, don’t use up all your energy before we start,” she giggled. “Well, we’ll go for whatever we can find! My first attempt was a frog, but my first actual catch was a hare! Frogs are near impossible anyway, I don’t know how ShadowClan does it.” And with that, she led her apprentice out onto the moor.
“Now. I’ll show you how it’s done. Watch my posture, getting the crouch is kinda important.” And with that, Blazefang inhaled deeply, catching a scent on the wind. A hare! Perfect. She walked in the general direction of the smell for a moment, then caught sight of her prey and immediately dropped to the ground. Crouching low, the she-cat stalked towards the hare. At what she hoped was the right moment, she sprang.

It was almost the right moment. The hare slipped out from under her claws, but it took only a short chase for Blazefang to reclaim her catch. Trotting back to her apprentice, she dropped the hare. “And there you go! It’s okay if you miss the pounce, as long as you’re close enough to catch it running.”

Silverpaw stared at her mentor in awe. She had no clue what a frog looked like, but she imagined that the creature was incredibly fast since it could escape from a warrior. To hear that Shadowclan cats could catch these creatures easily, it made her wonder how fast their warriors were, how fierce. Her thoughts were cut off however as her mentor began to lead them out of camp.

Silverpaw studied the crouch of the orange tabby, intently noting every slight bend to the cats shape. The apprentice's ears perked up as her mentor seemed to pick up a scent. Silverpaw raised her head and sniffed, trying to mimic Blazefang. She couldn't smell anything out of the ordinary, yet it seemed the warrior had. Crounching low and trying to stay silent, Silverpaw slowly traced her mentor's pawsteps remaining a couple tail lengths behind her. When her mentor stopped, so did she. Silverpaw gave the air another sniff before noticing the smell that she presumed the fiery cat had followed. As the hare slipped from her mentor's grasp Silverpaw couldn't help but giggle slightly to herself.

An uneasiness settled in Silverpaw as she realized it was now her turn. She wasn't sure she could succeed, but she didn't want to let her mentor down on their first outing. Shuffling her paws nervously the young apprentice raised her head, inhaling deeply as her mentor had. Over the scent of the hare lying at her paws, she could barely make out another similar scent not far off. She dropped to a crouch and followed the scent. After a short while, Silverpaw saw her prey digging at the earth. Shaking slightly, the young apprentice leaped for the hare.

The apprentice pinned the hare underneath her paws. The creature began to writhe under Silverpaw; not expecting this, Silverpaw let go of the hare, which swiftly flopped around and started to flee. Losing herself in the moment the young apprentice leaped forward again catching the beast narrowly. Not letting her surprise get the best of her this time, she quickly delivered a killing blow. Silverpaw puffed up triumphantly, padding back to Blazefang with the hare in her mouth. She beamed up at the ginger warrior waiting for anything she would say, but hoping that she would be praised above all else.

“Nice one, Silverpaw!” Blazefang congratulated her apprentice with a purr. “Let’s go ahead and grab a bit more. The clan will eat well today!” Blazefang took another deep sniff. Nothing. She padded off a few paces. Still nothing. A fox-length more… There. Another hare. The scent trail didn’t take her too far before she saw her prey. Once again, she dropped out of sight, stalking as close as possible before pouncing.

This pounce was more on point. She knocked the wind out of the hare and was able to kill it swiftly. The ginger warrior trotted back to the spot where the other two kills were and added the hare to the pile.

A deep purr of affection resonated from Silverpaw at the compliment. Dropping the hare with the the first one, the apprentice simply nodded to Blazefang. This time as her mentor stalked off however, Silverpaw waited by the pile of prey. At the sight of Blazefang, the apprentice called over "My turn," before bouncing away. After she had gained some distance and could smell something other than the hares they had gathered, Silverpaw sniffed at the air. Another scent hit her, further off but different. A rabbit! The apprentice dropped to a crouch, following the scent trail. When her prey came into sight she instantly pounced at it.

Her paws pinned the rabbit, and before the poor thing knew what was happening Silverpaw ended it. Excited to show Blazefang she hurried back to the pile they had formed, dropping the body triumphantly with the others.
