Subject: Snow Storms and Fallen Trees [Blizzardpaw] Fri 27 May 2022 - 18:37
"Up with you, Blizzardpaw." As promised, Beechfang had roused her new apprentice from sleep early. The habit of being up before the sun had been instilled in Beechfang as a medicine cat when it had been necessary to make the long trips to the moonstone, and now that she no longer had to to make those miserable trips... She still rose early. Most of the apprentices still in the den were sound asleep, too bad Blizzardpaw was not one of them. She would train him as much as she could before going to the nursery, and had every intention of not allowing him to end up like his mother.
Once Blizzardpaw had crawled out of his next, Beechfang flicked her tail, turning and leading him from camp. She lead him toward the creek, where prey was abundant in late newleaf. Being up this early meant it was still cool out, and by the time it was too warm and both predator and prey alike wanted to go back to their nests, they would have plenty of fresh-kill to bring back to camp.
"Alright so, hunter's crouch. Keep your legs bent like this-" She began to explain, dropping fluidly into the crouch as she spoke for a visual demonstration to go along with her words, "-Your tail, hips, shoulders and head should be more or less in a straight line, with your paws evenly spaced. You have long fur like me, so you'll want to be careful about letting it brush against foliage as you move. Keeping your tail still is important too, a shadow will spook prey into running before you get close enough to catch it. We can see and hear prey, but they can see and hear us, too. If it feels awkward at first, you get used to it." They would start with ground hunting for now. Beechfang didn't much like being in the trees, though she supposed she would have to suck it up to train Blizzardpaw to be a proper Skyclanner whether she wanted to or not. "Now, what can you scent? Prey will smell a bit different than what you find on the fresh-kill pile back in camp, but it should still be recognizable."
