The two were alone again, for the first time since she was an apprentice. While the tom wasn't exactly seeking out her company, it seemed that they tended to find each other even in assigned patrols. "Anywhere in mind you want to hunt? Or.. something?" He asked Featherfrost not really caring where they hunted. He knew nothing was going to go in his favor anyway, border patrols were much more of his strength, but he still would do his best for the clan.

Featherfrost... Another name change, another name to take what seemed like moons to get used to. She'd barely gotten used to Featherpaw, but for all that the clans were steeped in tradition and remaining set in their ways, they sure liked to change names two too many times for Atalante's liking.

The mottled warrior was quick to join her former mentor as he led the way from camp, though her thin frame tense beneath fluffy fur. She couldn't seem to shake the tension and fear since that gathering, both the dark specters that smelled of death and rot, her father's involvement, and the laughter of her mentor as he'd watched the slaughter not sitting well with her at all. She'd never believed in the dead, or that spirits could hold any power over the living. They'd been nursery-tales to scare kits. That was all. Only they weren't, and it seemed some of her clanmates were quite comfortable with that.

Starlingflare's voice broke into her thoughts, and Atalante was grateful for the distraction. Continuing to dwell on what had happened would only lead to insanity. She needed to not think on that and focus on the task at paw. Hunting, patrolling, whatever. "Somewhere without raccoons?" She asked, the hint of a smirk forming on her lips. They'd fought so many just for one scrap of prey... Ridiculous, truly.

Cereluean eyes scanned the undergrowth in search of prey, eventually settling on a mouse near the base of a tree. With a flick of her tail, Atalante crouched, quietly making her way towards her prey. Only to pause as a scent hit her nose. A sigh escaped her as she turned, leaping for the raccoon with unsheathed claws. Clearly, she'd spoken too soon.

As soon as she mentioned something about raccoon's the tom knew that there would be one to follow shortly after, and of course right as the slight dread him one did appear. The gray tom let out a growl, yellow eye staring down the creature. "You shouldn't have said anything. They know when we talk about them." He told his former apprentice, a slight growl edging his voice, irritated with the predator's appearance.

The tom was quick to slam a single paw down on the raccoon, killing it with his single blow. Once it's body was limp on the ground he turned his attention to Featherfrost. "Please don't bring them up again, I have had enough of them for a lifetime." He said, with fake exhaustion in his tone.

"My words have doomed us." She said morosely, gazing up at Starlingflare as he dealt the foul beast a killing blow. "Surely we've made a dent in their population by now, right? This is truly getting ridiculous." She huffed, though his dramatic words had somewhat eased the tension in her shoulders and offered a distraction from everything. With a glance toward the raccoon, hopefully the only one they would encounter, she began to search for more prey. Raccoon fur lining their nests were nice, but it wouldn't line their bellies with food.

Starlingflare let out a dramatic sigh, his head falling to the side lightly to emphasize the sigh. "You would think, but I think they are just rising out of the ground or something." His yellow eye scanned the surrounding forest. "I know they are out there.. watching.. waiting for me to not to be on edge, then they will strike." His eye narrowing slightly as he looked out into the dense forest.

He paused for a moment, letting it sink in before dropping the whole act all together. "Anyways, enough of my messing around.. I should actually ya know hunt.. but my eye doesn't exactly agree with that sentiment." Even with his health becoming better since the appearance of the dark forest cats, his hunting still hadn't approved. "At least I can beat predators up enough. They don't stand a chance!"

"Maybe we should just start preying on them instead." Atalante muttered, a hint of amusement flashing in her blue eyes. "Wouldn't taste great, but they keep finding us." Her tail twitched as her gaze shifted around the barren landscape. She knew Starlingflare's missing eye had to make things marginally more difficult, though Atalante wasn't sure by how much and had no experience with such things herself. She knew her father had found it difficult to adjust, but now that he was dead... Atalante shook her head, trying to ignore the thought. "Right, let's just... Try and find something." She mewed. "Anything to keep my mind off of them." By her tone, she wasn't referring to the raccoons that seemed to be everywhere. It took more searching than she would've liked to find another mouse, and she leapt. No raccoon snarled from the bushes or jumped out at her, and her jaws closed around the mouse's neck with ease. "Finally." She huffed out, quickly burying her catch.

"Fair enough." The tom huffed out. He knew that not everyone is going to like their new friends, but he for one liked their company. They made him stronger after all. Yellow eye followed after her form, even after she disappeared a little further to catch a piece of prey, an ability he was jealous of a little bit. All he wanted to do was make the clan stronger and help them but without his other eye... Well he was going to do what he could now, with the help of the dark forest.

He gave her a nod in respect for her catch, before moving to find something himself. He passed bushes and brush trying his best to track something down before spotting a mouse himself. The tom crouched low, going over a check list in his head to make sure he was doing everything right. Once he found his chance, he leapt. The tom was astonished when he felt the creature under his paws, he swiftly killed it, not wanting to risk it getting away even if he wanted to toy with it a little longer. He picked up the mouse in his maw turning to look at Featherfrost with a bright look on his face.

"Good catch!" She grinned at her mentor. They'd been on so many failed or interrupted hunts that every piece of prey caught seemed more important, such a far cry from what Atalante had been used to in the forgotten order with her siblings. Turning away with a small smile, the former rogue's gaze set upon a squirrel in the branches above. Moving quietly, she sprang upward, claws digging in and pulling herself up to the low tree branch on the opposite side of the tree from where the squirrel had been, then quickly made her way between branches. The hunt ended just as quickly as it had began, squirrel hanging from her jaws as Atalante jumped to the ground. The dark forest creatures seemed content to only watch for the moment, and as far as Atalante was concerned, so long as she could avoid smelling them, it would have to be good enough.
