Copper Mornings (Morningpaw's Training Thread)

Copperheart awoke the next morning as daylight drifted into the warriors' den. Today would be his first day training his very first apprentice, Morningpaw. He shivered a minute as he felt a cold breeze blow through the camp as he exited the warriors' den, and padded into to the apprentices' den. Then he gently prodded the gray and white apprentice to wake him up. "Morningpaw, it's time to begin your training", he quietly said to the apprentice and then left the den, waiting outside.

Morningpaw relished in being able to spread out into his own nest, away from his siblings and his mother, who loved to awaken him to groom his long fur. But this morning, he slept, so soundly-- The young tom leaped onto his feet, with nest fur, and bits of moss clinging to his pelt. Shaking it out, the apprentice bounded after his mentor. "Alright!" He purred, scurrying along. "What are we doing first?"

ooc: sorry for the late reply, I've been out of town this week.

ic: "I'm going to teach you to hunt today." Copperheart replied to Morningpaw. As they reached the training hollow, Copperheart stopped treading along, and spoke again, explaining the hunting process to his apprentice: "First you want to sniff out the air to see if you smell any pray. You want to make sure that your paw steps are light and steady so that prey does not hear you coming. Once you reach your prey, crouch down with your tail in the air. Again, make sure that your pawsteps are light to avoid making unnecessary noise." With that, he motioned Morningpaw to watch as he began to demonstrate. 
Copperheart performed the steps he just explained to his apprentice, first picking up the scent of a squirrel and then following it with light,steady steps. Once he was in distance of the squirrel he crouched down and then leaped into the air.
Once he landed on the ground, he moved back and murmured something under his breath as he saw that the squirrel was not there anymore. He then spoke up so that his apprentice could hear him "Prey is a bit hard to come by right now because of the harsh season, but those are the steps to follow. You can go ahead and try for yourself". He then motioned for his apprentice to attempt to catch prey.

"Yes!" The tom purred, joyfully leaping up the entrance of the camp, then out. As Copperheart described the proper steps, Morningpaw did his best to mimic the behavior, messing up his steps once or twice. He got a moment to pause as Copperheart nearly caught the squirrel he was aiming for. The tom's ears went up, standing on the tips of his paws to try and catch a glimpse, but the creature had scurried away. Head dropping, he shifted his paws. "O-okay." Before uncertainly sniffing the air.

For a bit, the young tom wondered the area, seeking anything he could find. After a few minutes of tasting the air, Morningpaw caught the scent of a mouse. What were they doing out of their burrow? He wondered but followed the scent until he heard the knawing of a nut. In the distance, a grey rodent sat, chewing away. Shifting into the position he had just learned, Morningpaw inched forward...

At a close enough distance, he kicked off the ground, barreling into the mouse. For a quick moment, the tom slipped, knocking the mouse airborne. It hit the ground with a thud, stunned for a moment. Morningpaw leaped back to his paws and swiftly ended the creature's life with a bite to the neck. Proudly, he lifted the small mouse towards his mentor. "I did it!" He purred, rushing towards his mentor, fluffy tail up high.

Copperheart purred in delight as he saw his apprentice was successful at his first attempt at catching prey. "Nice catch! You've done very good on your first time hunting." Copperheart commented to his apprentice. Then, Copperheart shivered as a cold breeze blew by the training hollow and ruffled his fur a bit. (since it was still in harsh season when this topic was created). "I know you might want to stay out longer and train more because that's how I was, but its too cold for anyone to be out for too long in this cold. We can continue training another day. Let's head back to camp now. Copperheart instructed to Morningpaw.
