Aoife's family was drifting and she hated it with all her heart. Ata, Achelois and Achlys had gone to Thunderclan for who knows how long, and Apollo and Aphrodite were gone forever. There was a pang of loneliness in her stomach that she refused to acknowledge, instead setting her paws on the path out of camp. She stayed in Order territory, not wanting to have to worry about being attacked by a self-righteous clan cat. However, prey was sparse everywhere, so it made sense how eagerly they protected their borders. Not group could afford to weaken or lose members to hunger, or sickness that was made ever more dangerous by malnourishment.

Even though there was only one guard now, the camp had never looked so tidy. Part of that was due to the barren weather, but also down to how Aoife had been patching everything up religiously. She wouldn't let anyone catch a chill as they slept, not like her sister. Aphrodite had always been weaker than her siblings, but she couldn't help but wonder if she could've prevented her death.

Her pace slowed and ears pricked up as she heard a scuffle on the ground. A squirrel nosed through the sparse greenery, desperate for any food. Without hesitation, Aoife crept towards, her paws completely silent on the ground. When she was near enough, she leapt, strong haunches inherited from her father's Skyclan genetics propelling her further. She landed neatly on top of the grey creature and killed it quickly before kicking snow over it.

The taste of fresh blood on her tongue made Aoife lick her lips, trying to resisting the urge to eat her catch. There was no rule against it, but she didn't want to take it if it would help another more. Luckily there were no kits or queens in the group, and every member was capable for hunting for themselves. But just because she could, didn't mean she was willing to.

She moved on from her buried squirrel, alert for any sign of prey. She liked hunting - it was enough to keep her mind off of things, to keep her brain focused on something entirely different. Over the past few sunrises, she had discovered that many tasks within camp left too much time for her mind to wander.

Right on cue, a small mouse made the mistake of making its presence known. Aoife stalked it just like she had the squirrel, once again pouncing perfectly. So far, it had been an unusually successful hunting trip given the harshness of the season. If anything, it cheered her up, even if it was on momentarily.

With a bit more of a spring in her step than before, Aoife continued to journey through the territory. After a short while, she spotted another squirrel, this one a bright ginger, much rarer than its grey relative. It perched on a somewhat low branch of a tree, oblivious to the she-cat's presence. She neared, waiting for her moment to leap and hoping that the animal would leave the branch where it sat, giving her a better chance to catch it on flat ground. However, the squirrel made no sign of moving and, not wanting to lose out on a possible meal, Aoife went for it. She leapt onto the branch, only to hear a loud crack and feel her feet fall out from beneath her. The squirrel, fast and light enough to get away, escaped unharmed, and left the calico she-cat lying on her side amongst the roots.

It was a lie. Cats didn't always land on their feet.

The fall wasn't far at all, and from what Aoife could tell, she wasn't at all injured. But something made her just want to lie there for a short while. Two pieces of prey wasn't a lot, but in the current circumstances, where many came back empty-pawed after hours of trying, it could be seen as successful hunting.

Before long, the guard stood up, shaking her long pelt from debris. It was too calm and peaceful lying there. The exact thing she was trying to avoid. Instead, she continued to walk, distracting herself with other things whilst she left the sight of her embarrassment far behind. Her father had always leapt so perfectly through trees, and it had never occurred to Aoife that it was a skill she would have to learn. And learn she would. By herself, she would learn which branches were good and which were bad. Also she was too scared to ask Klaus for help, or, as she put it, convinced he had better things to do.
