childhood friends

deerpaw bounded through the pines, not caring about whether she was scaring away prey. she always seemed to find more, anyway. she had been paired with one of her closest friend, Snowpaw, for a hunting patrol and she was excited. "Where do we start?" she asked her friend even though it wouldn't have mattered where they started. it was all snow anyways.

Snowpaw looked around. “I honestly don’t know. Maybe try over there?” she mewed, motioning to a bush with her ears.

deerpaw nodded and checked the air for scents. the scent of rat wafted through the air. crouching, the apprentice noticed a small brown body nibbling away at the stem of the bush. suddenly, the rat was swallowed whole by an adder. its beady eyes glared at deerpaw. hissing under her breath, she leaped at the adder. after all, a hungry cat would eat anything that comes their way.

Having barely learned to fight, Snowpaw mimicked her older friend and jumped at the adder. Midair, she seemed to be losing control but remembered to use her tail and hit her target full force in the head.

Deerpaw nodded to Snowpaw's question. "I think so. It should feed one or two cats, though I would rather hunt a prey that doesn't hit back. anyways, lets continue." she said, before glancing around at the snowy pines. she walked around for a while before noticing a fat brown rat. it was unusual to see such plump creatures in the harsh season, but maybe the rat had come from the twolegplace. anything that comes from there was plump regardless of the season.

dropping into a crouch, deerpaw narrowed her eyes as the creature shuffled around. she leapt but landed on... snow. "Fox dung!" she spat, watching the blur of brown dart away. flicking her tail in frustration at having lost such a good meal, she turned to snowpaw. "How about you try?" she suggested.

Snowpaw sniffed the air for a minute, checking for scents. Suddenly, she froze stock still. Lizard. With her prey in sight, Snowpaw stalked, trying not to make a sound, then pounced. Success! She killed it with a swift bite to the head. Returning to Deerpaw, Snowpaw set down her catch. “You’re right. It’s definitely better when they don’t fight back.”

Deerpaw laughed at Snowpaws comment. she flicked a playful paw over the younger cats ears. "You've caught far more prey than me on this patrol!" she joked. getting to her paws, she looked around for a while. a small grey shape caught her eye. frog?

she leaped at the creature and snapped her jaws around it before it even had time to react. she laughed at Snowpaw. "Now we're even!"

Snowpaw grinned. “Wanna make this a challenge?” she mewed. “Not counting the adder, since we kinda both caught that, first to three kills wins?”

Deerpaw grinned at her friend. "Oh sure~ Get ready to be destroyed!" she crowed, not really meaning what she said. turning around, she started looking for some life in the snowy pines. her eyes landed on a large hare. her eyes widened. had it crossed the border by accident? she licked her mouth and got into a crouch. the hare was the size of Deerpaw herself, maybe even bigger. snarling, she leaped and in a second her jaws was around its neck.

"Try outdoing that! This hare will feed all the kits and elders for days!" she joked, her amber eyes glimmering. it had been a long time since she had this much fun.

Snowpaw chuckled. “You’ve probably got me there.” Still, she took a deep breath, sniffing for any scent trail that might lead to large prey. Much to her disappointment, she only smelled mouse. Still prey. Snowpaw crouched, stalked, and pounced.

Snowpaw killed her prey and pranced back to Deerpaw. “Still a tie!” she crowed.
