Four nights ago, a patrol had noticed fresh fox scent in the Pine Grove. The night after that, Emberleap had gotten permission to do something about it. It threatened their prey and their apprentices, a risk ShadowClan couldn’t take with the cold season already storming in—and the cold threatened him. He couldn’t afford to get sick, bring back less prey, become a liability. This way, he could kill two birds with one pounce…provided he could find someone to join him. Burningwing and those he trusted were right out, as were most ShadowClanners old enough to know Asylum as fact rather than fiction, and Emberleap lacked the heart to drag Murkystar or Mistyfalcon into this while their son lay broken in the medicine den. That left a pawful of warriors. Only one of that pawful had agreed to come along.

He waited for him at the camp’s entrance, nervous paws churning the mud. It was a clear night, unseasonably warm. Good weather for a fox hunt. Movement across the camp caught Emberleap’s eye, and he looked up to see the warrior in question. “Last chance to back out,” he offered with a faint smile. “You’re sure you want to do this?” However grateful he was for Duskflight's help, he couldn’t forget the danger. Full name or not, Duskflight was still his apprentice; Murkystar and Mistyfalcon would quite rightly never forgive him if something went wrong, to say nothing about whether he could forgive himself.

Hearing that danger was lurking in the depths of his clan's territory, Duskflight couldn't just stay still. He knew that he had to do something, and so he volunteered to have come along. He spotted Emberleap at the entrance— waiting for his and the other warrior's arrival. Emberleap asked for his opinion, and the warrior shook his head, a determined smile appearing on his face as he did. "No, I'm ready." He spoke. Whoever the troubling vixen might've been, Duskflight wouldn't just let it roam around. Apprentices' lives would be in trouble, and so would other warriors from his clan.

Gratitude swept through Emberleap, briefly drowning out his nerves. In lieu of a more experienced warrior, Duskflight was one of the best patrolmates he could ask for; they’d fought together before, and he trusted his apprentice not to do anything reckless. “Well then,” he said, smile turning a shade steadier, “you know the drill. Stay clear of its mouth as much as you can, and run if something goes wrong. We can finish the fight another day. Or, uh, night. What matters is that we live.” He paused. “And that we don’t make too much trouble for Basilbloom.” Maybe he’d dig up some herbs for her later anyway.

Though the Pine Grove was as close to camp as it had always been, the walk there felt like a crawl. As the pair of warriors closed in on the ring of bushes around the clearing, Emberleap slid into a crouch. He could see hints of fox through the bare branches and hear it, too, squeaking to itself as it scooped dead leaves and slush into a pile. Hiding prey for later. Prey they could take for themselves if they killed it. With a flick of his tail to direct Duskflight forward, he slipped through the branches—just as the fox turned to face them. Caught on the wrong side of the bushes, Emberleap froze. The fox closed in. He reared up and drove his claws into its eye. A piercing yelp, barely audible over the blood pounding in his ears, told him he’d struck home. He and the fox sprang apart, and Emberleap, ears flat, glanced aside until he spotted his apprentice.

Emberleap used Sanctum Strike on Fox, dealing 8 damage and using 10 stamina. Fox is stunned for 1 turn.

"Right, Basilbloom is busy nowadays. I'll try not to trouble her too much!" He offered the tom a light chuckle. He was planning to be able to if not defeat— then have a chance to chase it off their territory, and he wouldn't let that opportunity go loose. His mentor was much more experienced than him, and with his help, he felt confident that they'd be able to do much damage to it. As Emberleap guided him forward, the fox closed in on his mentor, and he felt a need to take action right then. In just a blink of an eye, the fox sprang apart, and now was his turn to attack. Duskflight launched himself from behind, catching the fox off-guard as he aimed for the creature's tail. He'd sharply pull, teeth gripping tightly as he heard it yelp. Once it was stunned, the warrior took a step back, waiting for Emberleap to take his turn to attack.
