Subject: Hunting in the Frost-Tipped Grasses (Closed) Wed 6 Oct 2021 - 16:44
There was a chilling breeze that swept across the territory and Dappledpaw shivered as she slipped out of the entrance to camp. Frostgaze had offered to take her hunting and she was glad to be able to spend time with him. Her apprentice duties had been keeping her busy, so she wasn't able to spend as much time as she'd like with him. They traveled deeper into the marshes until they found a clearing that looked like a good spot to hunt. She stopped and meowed, "Where should I try to hunt?" She trusted Frostgaze's judgement more than her own on this. Afterall, he was a warrior.

Frostgaze had been pleased that, upon requesting a hunt, Dappledpaw wanted to hunt with him. Between her training, and his patrolling, they had gotten few chances to truly interact. He did want that to change, he truly did. It was just... logistical errors... that and the fact that he was unsure how to exactly speak to kits? They were just so emotional, and illogical generally. It was tough to interact with those unlike him, and that meant practically every single cat in Shadowclan. Regardless, he had lead them out into the mud-soaked land of Shadowclan territory.
Hearing Dappledpaw's question, Frostgaze's one ear swiveled backward toward her. "Try hunting in areas where it would be easy for prey to hide. Clumps of pine needles, mud near trees, areas such as that." Before taking off on his own hunt, the white tom decided to try something new for a change. "Dappledpaw, how has your time in Shadowclan been so far? I would assume it has gone well?" That's right, the new thing was conversation. At least until Dappledpaw found an appropriate piece of prey to hunt, then he would quiet himself and go in search of his own prey.
Suddenly, however, a scent flooded his nostrils with the changing of the Leaf-fall breeze that had him pause in his tracks. "Rogue." He whispered, "Dappledpaw hide, we may be able to get the jump on them yet." Frostgaze knew this was unlikely at best, and impossible at worst, knowing that the breeze had just changed. That meant that the rogue, wherever they were, could have been stalking them for some time yet. He did not wish to scare the apprentice though. So he stuck close, crouching low to the ground, mud covering his belly and paws, watching for the danger that had yet to reveal itself.
ooc: sorry for the wait! I've asked someone about being the rogue, so with luck there will be a rogue soon enough :)

Harley was, admittedly, a little bad at this.
She wasn't as fearsome as so many of the other rogues. She was small, and quite a bit meek, but she was sharp as an owl's talons and far better at holding her own in a fight than she gave herself credit for. As far as she'd convinced herself, she only struck up with the band of rogues for food– and it worked out great! She was fed, and she hadn't run into any Clan cats on her hunts yet.
The little molly picked her way carefully through the marsh, a bit of a hop to her step as she navigated the mud. There was a frog out there, somewhere, and she was determined to catch it. If she'd been a bit less single-minded, she would have caught the scent of cats she didn't recognize, would have worried more when the breeze shifted to blow against her fur. Instead, she took the cool air with a purr, and continued her hop-step in pursuit of her quarry.
Nosing the drooping leaves of a fern out of the way, Harley poked her head through the foliage. ...and nearly ran her head straight into a larger tom's flank. With a squeal, she scrambled over her paws to back up, hoping he simply hadn't seen her. Or heard. But her curiosity won out over her fear, and creeping back into view, she gave the cat she nearly ran into a wide-eyed stare.
"I don't know you," Harley mewed softly, blinking as she looked at him. "And there's– oh! There's two of you! Wait..." Wondrous blue eyes had landed on the little cat before the gears started working in Harley's head. Two strange cats wandering around ShadowClan, that definitely weren't any rogues that she knew, and that smelled funny...?
She squeaked as realization hit her, and snapped her eyes back to the must-be warrior. "Oh, oh oh oh! I get it. You must be Clan cats, right? Sorry... I think I'm supposed to hurt you, then." Harley had the sense to sound at least sincere in her apology, but she wasted no time waiting for a response before lunging forward, burying her teeth in the tom's hind leg.
Harley used Snap on Frostgaze, dealing 7 damage and costing 7 SP.

Dappledpaw looked for prey in the spots that Frostgaze recommended and answered his question. "It's gone well. I've met a few new cats," she meowed, but the wind suddenly changed and the scent of rogue was everywhere. She turned to hide in some nearby grasses and waited for anything to happen. A she-cat appeared and seemed to be confused on what she was doing. She soon attacked Frostgaze, though, and Dappledpaw let out a small meow in surprise. She jumped forward and slashed at the she-cat, trying to get her off of him.
Dappledpaw used Front Paw Strike, dealing 6 damage and costing 7 SP!

Frostgaze had smelled the rogue coming. Expressionless, he finally spotted her when she nearly ran into him. The white tom opened his maw to speak, to warn her that she had to leave immediately. Harley had practically immediately apologized, then said she had to hurt them. Wait, what? In his own momentarily confusion, he felt teeth latch onto his hind leg. Growling in pain, he kicked out with his hind leg, shaking the rogue off with haste. Likely helped by Dappledpaw's timely intervention. He was glad that she appeared to have combat training... or that she just was fighting.
With Harley off his leg, Frostgaze took two steps back, then charged at full speed toward his opponent. At the last possible second, the tom skidded to a stop, lifting his front paws to strike Harley's face, chest, and whatever else he could contact. He assumed his momentum would make his claws rip into her more. As soon as he had another opening, he hopped back, eyeing her, analyzing her. "Leave Shadowclan territory, or die." His usual threat, whenever rogues were about. Sometimes it enraged them, or made them laugh. He felt obligated to deliver this warning, however. If a rogue was truly oblivious, it was not right to kill them.
Frostgaze used Front Paw Strike, dealing 9 damage and using 7 stamina!
