Prickly Pheasants [c]

Pricklepaw was not going to sit around camp, unlike some cat he could mention *cough Tumble cough*. It was early morning still, and a soft breeze ruffled his fur. He’d spent the morning making sure his fur was impeccable, and he’d prefer to keep it that way. Going on a patrol sounded nice, but… other cats might mess up his pelt. Yes, he wanted to show every cat in the Clan that he and no other was the best. Right now, however, he just wanted to hang out, yeah? Just talk and have some fun, a quick hunt… with Pheasantpaw, of course.

She was the only cat he really liked, especially out of his siblings. She was nice, and from the very beginning had seen that he was the best, and she made sure to remind him of that. Quite honestly, Pricklepaw liked her, and that was the biggest honor he could give anycat.

“Pheasant!” He called, trotting over, his feathery tail waving behind him like a flag. “Come hunting with me?” It was more of a statement than a question, but he did want to give his favorite sister a choice… or not. She would accept, she always did.

Pheasantpaw shook her short, calico fur, yawning as she left her nest and out into the camp. She immediately padded over to her favorite place, the fresh kill pile. Lowering her head she grabbed a mouse and looked around the clearing. Continuing her daily routine she carried it over to another one of her preferred spots, a pile of leaves at the base of a tree. The apprentice sat down under the branches, the shade sheltering her a bit from the heat. She quietly sighed, taking a bite out of the dead mouse. Today would be boring.

Just as she was about to finish her food a mottled tabby approached her, calling her name. She recognized him as her brother Pricklepaw. Pheasantpaw smiled, somewhat genuine. He was one of the few cats she didn't hate, probably because he obviously thought well of her. They were allies, that is if she read him correctly. She took her last bite once he asked if she would go hunting with him. "Of course, I'm incredibly bored," she replied, "Also I want to see how well Stoatfur has taught you."

Usually she would prefer to stay in her spot, but that was all she would do that day. Plus Pricklepaw asked her, and she wouldn't say no unless she had a good reason. Double plus the fresh kill pile needed more to it. Triple plus she needed to stretch her muscles, she didn't want to get flabby like her brother Tumblepaw, who rarely moved. She rose to her paws and trotted toward the entrance to the Thunderclan camp, waiting for Pricklepaw to go through first.

Pricklepaw gave Pheasantpaw a smile and led the way out of camp, feathery tail waving behind him. “Oh, I’ve been doing awesomely.” what else would you expect? was implied in his tone. “My natural ability must be kicking in,” he mewed with a straight face. Pheasantpaw might be the only cat he’d tolerate that question from. Still. He’d show her he was an absolute force. Best hunter in the Clan. Best fighter in the Clan. Best everything in the Clan.

The forest felt pleasant, if not perfect. Thank the stars it wasn’t muddy, or else he’d spend the rest of the day cleaning mud out of his pelt. It wasn’t too hot either, another blessing. The breeze might obscure scents however, so they’d better get to work. “I’ll go to the right, you to the left. Yowl if you run into anything problematic.” Flicking his tail and without another word, he turned sharply and headed into the underbrush. Nose to the ground, he quickly picked up the scent of squirrel, and a scrabbling in the leaves not far from him pinpointed it’s location.

With a leap, he pinned it by its bushy tail, biting the base of its neck. It died swiftly, and Pricklepaw scraped some dirt over it, wondering if Pheasant had any luck. Squirrel was easy prey, anyways. He’d better catch something harder next time, just to show off.

She flicked her ear as Pricklepaw responded to her about training. Pheasantpaw thought he sounded a bit defensive. "I never doubted," she said calmly. Once she and her brother entered the forest she instantly caught scent of prey. She wasn't sure what it was yet. Pricklepaw ran off to the right, telling Pheasantpaw to go to the left. She frowned, not appreciating being told what to do. Pricklepaw thought he was the best cat in the clan, which sometimes annoyed her. Sure it made it somewhat easy to please him but it could get on her nerves. The calico shook her head at her mixed feelings about the tom, padding off to follow the scent.

Her body was long and low to the ground, giving her an advantage in stealth. She swiftly slipped through the brush, quickly approaching her prey. She had figured out it was a thrush by the time she heard it chirping ahead of her. Pheasantpaw slowly crawled through the grass until she could see a glimpse of it's tail, swiftly darting at it.

Pheasantpaw missed her footing, the bird fleeing into a tree. Standing up she growled, lashing her tail in frustraion. "So close," she muttered to herself. Suddenly there was a snarl behind her, causing her to jump. She fell onto the leaves, twisting her head to see what was there. Her eyes met with the fox's seconds before it snapped sharp teeth at her, latching onto her front leg. Pheasantpaw screeched at the crushing pain as it dragged her through the air. The shake prevented her from retaliating, she just had to hope it would let go or someone would make it.

IC: Pricklepaw’s hunting was interrupted by a loud noise from Pheasantpaw’s direction. For a moment, he was frustrated, but suddenly realized- this was a cry of pain. Someone was hurting his sister. His sister.

How dare they.

With a furious snarl, he rushed through the woods to the source of the cry, breaking through underbrush and bracken, breaking twigs as he forced his way through. Pheasantpaw. A fox. He took in the scene at a glance, then rushed forwards, clawing at the fox’s face, trying to get it to release his sister. He’d fought one with Waterlily before, they’d be fine… but Waterlily was a warrior, and Pheasantpaw an apprentice. Fury glittered in his green eyes. This fox had no right to hurt his sister. With a blood curling screech, he flung himself at it, slamming the fox’s head into the ground and slashing at it repeatedly. A red mist covered his vision, and without thinking he tore into the fox, snarling, with no concern for his well-being. If it hadn’t been stunned, he would’ve been in deep trouble, but it was momentarily dazed by the ferocity of his attack.

Pricklepaw used Front Paw Strike and Thunderous Stomp, dealing 7 damage and costing 17 stamina. Fox is stunned for one turn.

Pheasantpaw was dropped as the fox's head was ambushed by an angry tom. Breathing heavily she looked up to see Pricklepaw bashing the predator's face. The injured she-cat hissed at the stinging pain in her leg, unable to stand up. But she couldn't let that distract her. The fox was still dazed from Pricklepaw's fury, now's her chance to attack. The calico was close enough to reach out at the fox's stomach. Swinging her claws at the soft underfur, successfully hitting it. "Keep distracting it!"she screamed.

The fox dropped Pheasantpaw with a snarl. Good. Pheasantpaw’s leg seemed injured. Not good. This fox had hurt his sister. This fox had hurt his sister. With another guttural cry, Pricklepaw continued tearing into the fox while it was dazed, blood splattering across his fur. At last he leaped back as the fox began to recover from his previous blows. “Pheasantpaw, you need to get up,” he hissed eyes locked on the crimson-splotched pelt. ”Come on, Pheasant, I can’t do this myself!” It hurt, it hurt to admit it. That he couldn’t do it himself. But he couldn’t… the fox’s blows we’re too strong… he needed help. This wasn’t the time to deny it…

He forced himself to focus on the fox. Maybe if they weakened it some more he’d be able to do what Waterlily had done… clamp his jaws around its throat. But he couldn’t do it alone.

Pheasantpaw hissed, both from fear and anger. Why me? Why now, why did this have to happen? Blood was everywhere, staining her short fur. She wanted to go home, she needed to get away from this. If her leg was working she would have been out of there in a second. Her brother was watching her, she listened to his cries. "I can't get up!" she yelled accusingly, wasn't it obvious? But there seemed to be something on his face she had never seen on Pricklepaw before, desperation? She flinched, blood landing on her muzzle as he bit into the fox's throat. She kinda had expected him to run, but he was still fighting. For her? The fox latched his maw onto one of Pricklepaw's legs, flinging the cat off of it. "Prick-!" She hated this, she hated the fox. Pheasantpaw repositioned herself into a crouch before stretching her paws out at the fox's head, clawing the side of it's face. We need to end this, quickly.

The fox’s jaws clamped onto his leg… hard. Pricklepaw landed… hard. Stars swirled in his vision as he lay limp on the ground, head spinning. The fox advanced, licking blood off its face. No. No no no. With a guttural snarl, Pricklepaw clambered to his paws, adrenaline coursing through his body. This monster wouldn’t harm him or anycat he cared about. Not today.

The tabby threw himself full-tilt at the fox, clawing and biting with everything he had. The fox, surprised at what had seemed an easy kill suddenly charging it, stumbled back. No words came from Pricklepaw’s throat, just a guttural rumble of how dare it. How dare it attack his sister. How dare it attack him. He’d make this fox fear him, if it took everything he had. His teeth sunk deep into the fox’s face, blood spurting across both the combatants. Although Pricklepaw was still fighting, he was fueled by adrenaline, trying desperately to keep the fox focused on him. If they could just weaken it a bit more… he could try to tear its throat out. Just a bit more…
