In the Shadows [Herb Patrol]

Dovefrost didn't really mind the company he had brought with him to the Owl Tree. It had been a while since he had been out with warriors and it honestly brought some relief to the white tom, even if they were out here looking for herbs. They could keep an eye on the owl that lived in the tree, while also looking for the herbs the Medicine cat needed, granted he didn't really need defending considering his previous warrior training. It was nice to have someone watching out for you though.

"Anything out of what I told you will be useful, don't skip on it. If you have any questions on what something is, or what it does feel free to ask." The tom stated, his green eye turning to scan the area around the Owl Tree. It had been a while since he looked for anything here, so they should easily find full grown herbs.

Wolfblaze was happy, especially to be out with Kestrelswoop. She just felt... nice being around him. It was good! He was skilled, smart, handsome... ok maybe she would never tell him that last part. She nearly didn't hear Dovefrost's words, nearly. When she did register them, she whipped around with a "Gotcha!" Suddenly, she got an idea. She dropped her head low, whispering in Kestrelswoop's ear, "Let's see who gets the best herbs!" She then proceeded to bump his shoulder, and run off, her hasty nature showing itself in full force.

Despite her sniffing around, she didn't actually know what herbs looked like. She found... normal flowers? Nothing good that she could tell though. Of course, she had made a competition that she was going to lose. She was... okay with losing to Kestrelswoop though. Maybe she could find something else anyway.

Kestrelswoop was definitely growing soft... and he only had one cat to blame for this revelation. He didn't know what about her that drew him closer but he was a teeny bit scared to find out. She was just so different from him that he couldn't help but join in on her enthusiasm and bouts of energy. He supposed that after many moons of being so reserved and rather stoic, his body and mind was probably desperate for a change of pace, a new change of scenery. He was still very much the workaholic that everyone grew to know but Wolfblaze brought out a new side of him that even he was surprised to find out he had within. Honestly, he enjoyed her company very much, so much in fact that at times, he would find himself yearning a bit of time with her. He would never say that aloud, StarClan forbid. Who knows how she'd react. He'd be too mortified to even dare show his face in ThunderClan every again. For now, it was best to not think of these things and focus at the current task.

Currently, he, Wolfblaze, and Dovefrost were going out hunting for herbs. He was feeling rather chipper today. It was probably due to his love for helping others but an annoying little voice in the back of his mind told him that it was most likely Wolfblaze's presence that lifted his spirits. He instantly squashed that thought like a bug, face heating up, much to his utter dismay. Luckily, none of his company seemed to notice his flustered state. He shook his head as if he could shake away the thoughts. He turned his attention back at his denmate as he listened in on her proposition. The way she leaned in close and whispered into his ear nearly made him outwardly shiver. Dang Wolfblaze intensifying his flustered state. He couldn't help but shoot her a lopsided grin and a firm nod of acceptance as she bumped her shoulder to his and bounded away. What was he going to do? He was hopeless..

The brown and white warrior turned back to offer the medicine cat a shrug and an apologetic smile before racing away, challenge now occupying the forefront of his head. Kestrel wasted no time as he diligently scoured the area he'd chosen. He wasn't too sure if he'd be able to truly identify what was useful and what was not but he'd try his best. Besides, Dove instructed them to ask if they needed the help. He'll keep that in mind but was determined to try to find herbs on his own first. He was always eager to learn and grow his already expansive knowledge.

The warrior hesitated a bit as he eyed the few yellow flowers that were growing closer to the ground. He swears he'd seen them being used occasionally by medicine cats. It must have importance then however, he wasn't sure of they're name. With his mind set, the tom carefully dug them up -three to be exact- and began to slowly head back to where he'd last left Dovefrost to show him his find, plants gently held in his maw.

After some searching, he hurried up to the tom and gently prodded him with a paw. Once he had his attention, he signaled to his find and tilted his head, a silent question as to where Dove wanted him to set them down. Hopefully he'd understand. He wanted to be as careful as he could be with any other herbs he was lucky to encounter.

The medicine cat watched the two interact for a moment, taking note of things the other two didn't seem to want to notice themselves just yet. He couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle and shake his head once Kestrelswoop had offered him a shrug. Whatever helped them find herbs better.

The white tom started to look around himself, trying to find anything he needed. It didn't take him long before he found familiar webs clinging to a tree nearby. Quickly he grabbed what he needed, to grab the delicate webs. Carefully he scooped them up, and gently placing them in a spot for him to remember to grab later.

Wolfblaze was never one to give up on the first try, no matter how annoying it was to find nothing. With a glance over her shoulder, her amber gaze fell upon Kestrelswoop, seemingly having found something already. He was so good at finding things, whether it prey or herbs. She wasn't going to stop now though, not even because she liked him and really didn't care if he won. This was for her own pride! Oh and the good of the clan or whatever, that mattered too. Before she did move on, however, she gently picked up one of the flowers in her mouth, transporting it with her. This would be a surprise tool that helped her later.

It took her a little bit of searching, but soon Wolfblaze found a plant that caught her eye. Something with purple flowers, and a hairy stem. Pretty, and maybe a herb? Dropping the flower, she picked some of the herbs, carrying them gentle in her mouth. Picking back up the other flower, she moved quickly to Dovefrost, dropping the herbs in front of him. Despite her words being slightly muffled by the flower in her mouth, Wolfblaze spoke. "Here you go! I don't know what this is but it looks like an herb?" Her head tilted, looking for Kestrelswoop. Once she found him, she trotted over, dropping the flower in front of him. "This isn't an herb, but it's pretty! Here you go!" She was almost tempted to add a 'like you' to that statement, but she used what brainpower she had to assume that might've been a bad idea. She had figured out that some thoughts warranted an extra thought, and admitting she thought Kestrelswoop was pretty was one of them.

Dovefrost seemed to be in the 'zone' and walked right past his without saying much. Kestrel didn't really mind since it appeared that the medicine cat had found some herbs as well. He watched the tom place down the cobwebs he had found safely. After a bit of thinking, the warrior decided on placing down the flowers he had found right by the cobwebs.

Before he could turn away and start his search once again, he could see Wolfblaze quickly approaching them. He felt a wave of pride as he watched her drop the herbs she found right in front of Dove. Gosh, she was so good at prey hunting and herb hunting and generally... well... everything. He snapped out of his daydreaming when he realized that said she-cat had dropped something in front of him. A flower? It was sure pretty, like she said. He was honestly touched and a bit flustered at the gesture. "T-Thanks Wolfblaze." he managed out as he carefully picked it up and placed it somewhere safe so he could pick it up later without  issues. "I wanna keep it safe for when we head back." he explained simply as he turned back to face the other. A thought suddenly popped into his head and he, without much of an explanation, began to rush away but not before telling Wolf to stay where she was.

After some time searching, he found a really pretty, random golden flower with an orange-ish hue to it. He carefully plucked it and briskly returned back to where he'd left Wolfblaze waiting. "Sorry for running off. Just stay right there and don't move much." he instructed gently once he'd placed down the flower in front of her. He lifted a paw and softly used it to lower her head a tad. Once again he used his jaws to pick up the plant and with a bit of maneuvering, managed to place it on her head beside her right ear, flower facing forward. "Don't move yet 'kay?" he rumbled as he lowered her head a bit more to gain more access to the flower's stem. He lifted himself up onto his back legs and began to used his claws as gently as he could to weave and bury the stem securely between sections of her dark fur. Once satisfied that it wasn't going to budge easily, he lowered himself back down and once again lifted a paw but this time to lift up her chin. There. It complemented her eyes well.

The tom grinned bashfully as he got a good look at the she-cat. She was a sight to behold indeed. Before he could fall back into a daydream, he stepped back and puffed out his chest. "There you go. L-Looks real good on ya." Kestrel stuttered as he bashfully looked down at his paws. He then looked back up and offered her the softest smile he'd ever given anyone before turning away and heading back to continue herb hunting, tail softly batting the she-cat's cheek before he had fully gone away. He was a bit embarrassed at what he'd just done yet just looking at the result had his heart doing leaps like it had never done before. He needed to leave before she could say anything. He was utterly hopeless...

Eventually, the brown and white warrior found himself back to his current duty, eyes sharp as he scoured around for anything that remotely resembled a herb.

As soon as he had found the familiar flower that produced poppy seeds, the warrior was quick to pluck them. He was careful to not have any seeds fall off. He wanted to make sure he got back with a sufficient amount for Dove's stock pile.

Dovefrost watched carefully as Wolfblaze had approached him, a flower and herbs in her maw. He let out a small snort in amusement as she told him she thought she found something. It was something wonderful, it was Catmint. Something really important especially during leaf-bare. "That's catmint. It's really important so a good find." Though he was sure his words fell on deaf ears, because shortly after she went right to Kestrelswoop, presenting him with the flower she had found, only for Kestrelswoop to turn around and do the same thing. Stars were these two hopeless.

The white tom glanced over as the other tom brought him some seed. "Poppyseeds.. Good find." Dovefrost said not bothering with any extra details. Once he made sure everything new was in a nice and neat pile he went searching himself. A familiar flower caught his eye and the medicine cat quickly went over to it, plucking its leaves. Daisy leaves were useful, plus they were big so it could help with carrying the other herbs back.

Wolfblaze's heart was warmed when Kestrelswoop accepted her gift. Flowers were beautiful! She knew that he should have one, at least to decorate his nest. She had picked up a paw to rush away, as she did, when she was told to stay. Stay? In one place? A concept mostly foreign to the molly, but it was Kestrelswoop, so she complied with the most compliance she could ever comply with. Her paws were practically glued to the ground for all she was doing. She watched him for a little while, rustling about in the foliage. She wasn't sure what he was doing, but he was probably doing a good job. She silently rooted him on, he could do anything as long as he put the effort in! Eventually she looked away, which was the curse of her short attention span, and she watched Dovefrost root around for herbs. He was a good medicine cat, probably annoyed that she was standing around and not actually helping currently. Ah well, she'd find something else good soon enough, it turned out she had found catmint! He said that was good, so she was pleased for a time.

In Wolfblaze's peripheral vision, she saw a brown shape approaching, and snapped her gaze back to him. What did he have... a flower? She once again began to move when he said not to, and she replanted her paws, curiosity overtaking her. "What-whatcha doing?" She stumbled over her words as he pushed her head down slightly, mostly surprised. She was flushed, to be in such close contact with him. She shouldn't feel like this, he is a friend! He didn't think this about her probably! Her gaze bore into the ground, trying to have her thoughts flee her brain. It was so easy usually. Before she could think once more, a paw was tilting her head back up. Wow... why was he so handsome and kind? Putting a flower in her fur? All she had done was give one to him... She was frozen in place, even when he gave her the softest of smiles, a tail brushing against her cheek... She was in actual, visceral shock! "I- I uh... thank you." That was all she could mumble as she began to move once again, wide eyes looking for herbs. She was hopeless... wasn't she.

It took a little while for her to find anything. Soon enough, Wolfblaze found, at the base of a tree, the small woven home of a spider. That meant one thing, cobwebs! She... wasn't really sure out to carry them. Sticking out a fluffy paw, she gathered the cobwebs up, padding along with three limbs to keep the newfound cobwebs from getting too dirty. Dirt couldn't be great for anyone... right? She wasted no time depositing them before Dovefrost, struggling to get them off her paw. "Here you are! Cobwebs for... uh.. what do you use them for?" Herbs she knew could be chewed or something, but did anyone actually eat cobwebs? Yuck.
