Of course, as usual, there was a constant shadow over their shoulders. Her head tipped in every direction, noting the flickers of fur through the frosted foliage, or the stifled whisper of rushing paws. Asylum cats lurked about in a perpetual state of overwhelming intrusion. She'd noted several days prior how it had become more comfortable than any clan cat would care to admit. After the initial invasion, both parties had slipped into a comfortable routine; day by day life was becoming unfortunately normal. Kitefire had seen clanmates take up a pelt in a similar manner to their oppressors. The she-cat, on account of her short coat, hated to admit she'd considered it more than once.

But this was no time to be thinking like an Asylum cat or even entertaining their pestering presence. Today Kitefire would have to thinking like a warrior. No foreigners would strip her of the life she had been born into or get in the way of another Thunderclan apprentice learning to earn their title as well. Would they? Her paws grew heavier with each step and she tried to shake away the rising discomfort writhing like a snake in her chest. Eyes rose to find Emberpaw who she had tried to make light conversation with along the way until finally stopping short at the owl tree. There would be prey and predators here and it would make for a fine training spot.

"Alright then, Emberpaw. We're going to start with hunting and then we can work on sharpening your battle skills." Her throat was dry, had it always been this parched. The mild tilting of her head continued on as she spoke, desperately seeking out any hints of sound. Nothing would catch her off guard this time or put the young cat who had been entrusted to her at risk. Kitefire briefly gritted her teeth and stole away her resolve. Fears were better saved for later, "Crouch like this. Keep your tail above the ground. Make sure you watch your pawsteps or you will scare prey away. Also... always test the air. Downwind is better for a catch." Singling out a tiny rock ahead, just barely brushed with frost, the warrior crept forward and pounced. After she was finished, the little russet she-cat motioned for her companion to follow suit.

Emberpaw nodded as Kitefire showed him the correct hunting pose. He copied the way she showed him and got ready to pounce on the rock,imagining it as real prey. When he knew he was ready he pounced landing on the rock, which was slippery from snow, and fell off with a big thud. He quickly got to his paws, shaking the snow from his thick fur, and smiled at Kitefire ready for what was to come next.

"Well done," she praised with the tiniest nod of approval. The warrior's eyes only landed on him for a fraction of a second before flickering back to their surroundings. Ears perked and her good ear darted back and forth to strain for any offending sounds. Kitefire hated that she felt more on edge than usual. Tipping her slender chin had become a commonplace quirk. There was a brief pause as she considered the snow-ladden world. All seemed well for the moment. A stifled sigh left the sides of her maw as she turned back to Emberpaw, "Alright, try it on something real. Look for a mouse or a squirrel, maybe even a vole. I'm sure at this point you know how common they are in Thunderclan territory." It had dawned on her that she would have to watch the tom's catch and evaluate it as any good mentor would do, as Robinloft had done for her. Flicking her tail uneasily and drawing her features into a more stoic expression, the russet she-cat tried to force herself to relax. Unyielding pairs of eyes bore into her coat but at least it meant that Asylum would help keeping predators at ease. Only the most mild hints of relief seemed to settle in her paws at the thought.

Emberpaw nodded in excitement as he opene his jaw slightly. He caught the scent of a squirrel, noticing it was recent. He silently padded after the scent trail, trying to figure out where the squirrel went. As the scent got stronger he noticed the creature in the snow looking for nuts. With a quick motion, he pounced, but the squirrel saw him and ran up a tree. Emberpaw turned in the air, landing on his paws, then headed back towards Kitefire. Even though it was his first hunt he hated that he didnt catch it.
