Though some distant part of Thrushnose found the custom fascinating, the pelt an Asylum rogue chose to wear was more or less irrelevant. Each skin hid the strength of the cat beneath it as well as any other; a dog was no more treacherous than a fox, a rabbit, a badger. Still, she took it upon herself to track down an Asylum escort for her patrol rather than wait for one to approach her. The first she saw was a broad-shouldered tom, gray and white patches visible where the badger’s pelt became a cat’s. Not a dog, and smaller than her to boot. Good enough. With a pointed nod toward the camp’s exit, she told him, “I’m going hunting.” Taking that as the invitation she wished it wasn’t meant to be, the badger-wearing tom slipped into step beside her, and they left.

The walk was tense but, to Thrushnose’s relief, dead silent aside from the soft crush of snow under their paws. A steady incline brought them to the Fallen Oak. As Thrushnose approached the ancient trunk to refresh ThunderClan’s half of the border, a line of fur shot up along her spine. SkyClan scent—fresh SkyClan scent. She raised her head, dull green eyes narrowed ever so slightly. Another patrol, maybe? After a moon of no word from the other Clans, the thought was almost reassuring.

Honeycomb hated being on patrol with the Asylum cats. They barely talked, barely did anything except shuffle around in boredom. Growling under her breath and kneading the ground with one paw, the light ginger she-cat angrily marched forward...right into ThunderClan territory. Unknowing that she had crossed the border, Honeycomb thought that she smelled ThunderClan scent, and instantly dove into a nearby bush, her ginger fur barely blending into the dead leaves. The ThunderClan she-cat seemed to scent her and Honeycomb let out a small hiss, before running into the other cat and tackling her to the forest floor, both of them landing on the ground with a light thump. Honeycomb instantly leapt off the she-cat, backing off and hissing at her.

In all the chaos, Thrushnose had nearly forgotten borders were worth fighting over. Even if they couldn’t talk thanks to their Asylum companions, the sight of another Clan’s warriors meant there were other Clans, that ThunderClan’s neighbors were pushing onward too. Though she searched for a SkyClan face, she wasn’t expecting an attack, and the pale ginger blur that shot toward her left her no time to dodge. With a startled cry, she tumbled to the ground. Instinct, thankfully, wasn’t so easy to distract. She came up swinging, only for the SkyClan warrior to scramble just out of reach. The Fallen Oak sat behind them—placing them both firmly on ThunderClan land. Maybe Thrushnose could take that boldness as proof of SkyClan’s survival. Later, she told herself. First, she had a battle to win. “What do you think you’re doing?” Bounding forward, the striped she-cat brought her broad forepaws down onto her opponent’s head, aiming to stagger her rather than draw blood. She may not have been built like the ideal ThunderClanner, but she’d trained the same as the rest of them. “This isn’t your territory.”

Honeycomb snarled in anger as the ThunderClan warrior brought her paws down on the ginger she-cat's head. Stumbling back and shaking her head to clear the confusion and dizziness, the ginger she-cat snarled and unsheathed her right forepaw, running towards the ThunderClan cats' side and then slashing at Thrushnose. The Asylum rogues just sat there, doing nothing and watching. "USELESS Asylum cats! What are you even doing about this?"

The SkyClanner charged again. In her wake, a few thin lines of blood welled up along Thrushnose’s side. If there had been any reason to believe this was less than an ordinary border skirmish, that move threw it away. Twisting around in an instant, she dove under the SkyClanner and dug her claws into the soft skin of her belly. As Thrushnose hurled herself back to her paws, she caught a glimpse of her own Asylum escort just…watching. Though the SkyClanner was very much her opponent, and probably planning a counterattack at that exact moment, she couldn’t help a soft growl of agreement: “The least they could do is fight each other.”

The moment that the ThunderClan she-cat raked her claws across Honeycomb's belly, she knew that she was in trouble. The pinpricks of pain made Honeycomb remember her kits and the ginger she-cat winced. She didn't want to retreat. That was considered very, very cowardly, and Honeycomb never backed out of a fight. However, she remembered that in her stomach, there was life. Honeycomb couldn't sacrifice her kits to win a border skirmish. The kits need you. Sighing in defeat, Honeycomb gave the other cat a nod. "You won this time." Turning her back on the ThunderClanner, the ginger-gold cat nodded towards her Asylum companions. "We're leaving."

To Thrushnose’s surprise, the retaliation she’d braced for never came. Instead, the SkyClanner hesitated. Something unreadable flitted across her face; then she gave a heavy sigh, a nod, and a surrender, and turned toward her rightful side of the border. On another day, against a more belligerent opponent, Thrushnose might have taken advantage of the opening. Today, she stepped back with a nod of her own and a soft “good luck.” The fight was over. Her heart hadn’t truly been in it; maybe the SkyClanner felt the same. Once her one-time opponent fell out of view, Thrushnose finished marking the border, then addressed her badger-wearing chaperone. “Let’s go.” She’d done what she needed to do; now the hunt could begin.
