days like sand (open hunting topic)

The stench of gunk heating in the sun. A little pond, yesterday covered in a layer of pond scum, was now partially uncovered. Egretstorm kept this pond and those nearby well-maintained - skim off the duckweed and algae, hunt for a few days, move on to the next. Rise, repeat. It wasn't enough to simply hunt without thought towards tomorrow. If RiverClan were to stay strong and grow, they needed to plan. Cleaning the scum, leaving leafy sticks in the shallows, fishing, all of it done with a tried and true schedule. It was something to think about. To keep her mind busy during these indistinguishable days. Today she brought younger cats to fish this pond. The bigger fish and frogs had to be kept in check, and the waterbirds that also preyed on the same creatures had to either be caught or scared away.

"Take a place at the edge," her voice came soft as they approached, ears pricked for the sound of prey at the banks. "or at least keep to this area."

This was one of Bluepaw's first outings since being apprenticed, and she felt a bit odd as she followed Egretstorm to the edge of a pool that had been carefully maintained. She'd certainly dipped her paws in the water before and knew how to swim, though it was the idea of failing to catch prey that unnerved her, even more so the idea of failing to do so in front of her Clanmates, especially Flashpaw or Timberpaw. She wanted to avoid their ridicule, so she'd practiced in the stream that surrounded their camp, though she wasn't super confident in her ability.

She slowed to a stop at the water's edge, taking a seat beside Egretstorm as she waited for the warrior's instruction.

When the other cats on patrol dispersed, Egretstorm glanced at the young she-cat named Bluepaw. Though she was large, she was, how to put it, more timid than a minnow. Though some might have used that trait to take advantage of the grey tabby, the, uh, fellow grey tabby saw someone familiar instead. Her brother was much like this, when he was around. She made a mental note to visit his grave.

"Alright, Bluepaw." She spoke softly so as not to scare the fish that may be lurking nearby. "I'm sure you know about keeping your shadow away from the water, right? But that doesn't just mean going to the other side of the pond, you can use the reeds too!"  As demonstration, the stocky she-cat padded around to a clump of cattails, and indeed the shadow of the reeds hid her form. She waited, staring at the water's edge, before darting forward teeth-first. When she emerged, chest and muzzle dripping wet, she held a struggling sweetfish between her fangs. Giving Bluepaw an encouraging head-jerk, she took a step back to properly kill her catch.

Nodding along to Egretstorm's instructions, Bluepaw crouched down and shuffled her way into the reeds so that she too sat at the edge of the water, her shadow blending in with that of the aquatic grass. She watched earnestly as the older she-cat plunged her head into the pool, dragging out a sweetfish that struggled still in her jaws. The large apprentice nodded a little as she turned her attention to the pool of water, and she raised a paw as she prepared to hook a fish out of its depths.

She took a deep breath, located a fish close enough to the surface, and her paw flashed into the water. There was no challenge, and the fish had no time to escape the thorn-sharp claws that gripped it as it was forcibly removed from the water. Bluepaw hopped back as the fish fell onto the bank, and she pounced on it to keep it from falling back in before killing it with a nip behind its head.
