Today, another of his grandkits would become an apprentice. Wolfcall padded into camp, returning from a last-minute patrol towards the Thunderpath. When the kits had been born, there'd been some sort of commotion there, with lots of Monsters and Twolegs, and so recently he'd taken to patrolling it much more often than had been the norm. So far, nothing there had struck him as overly concerning... but it was part of his routine now to check it, and so he did. Today in particular had been a little bit more kind as far as weather went, in the past few weeks. There'd been an ever so light drizzle, and the forest had soaked it in, perking up and flourishing with the spontaneous gift from the sky. Prey would be running good tonight, and so it was imperative that he get this apprentice ceremony finished! Perhaps her new mentor could even take her hunting tonight. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Tallbranch for a clan meeting!"
Primrosekit had been witnessing yet another squabble between her littermates, first trying to intervene and then eventually giving up when they didn't seem to listen to her. When she heard Wolfcall's summon, she used it as and excuse to ignore them. He was standing on Tallbranch, and, as usual looked like a dark brown smudge against the green of the trees. The only reasons she could tell it was him was his voice and smell, that was similar to Bloodstrike's and Mistpaw's.
His granddaughter didn't take long to appear, her pale pelt outlined against the gathering shadows. Wolfcall waited to allow all the rest of the clan to show up before he raised his voice to speak. "Primrosekit, please step forward!"
The deputy flicked his tail with a reassuring smile, nodding kindly at her. "Primrosekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and now it is time for you to become an apprentice. From this day forward, and until the day you earn your warrior name, you will be known as Primrosepaw. Your mentor will be Smokefeather, I know she will do her best to train you to be a skilled, proud warrior of SkyClan."
Smokefeather settled in to watch the newest apprentice be named, a soft smile on her face. As trying as her kits could sometimes be, she was proud of them all. They'd been waiting anxiously for this day, and now she had to watch them move out of the nursery. They were growing. It was an oddly bittersweet feeling.
Smokefeather couldn't quite hide the startled look she gave Wolfcall as her name was called to be Primrosepaw's mentor. "I'll do my best, thank you, Wolfcall."
Part of her was excited, part of her was nervous-- her first apprentice, her daughter... The silver and cream tortoiseshell rose to her paws and padded forward, gently bumping her nose against Primrosepaw's. "I can take you hunting tonight, if you want, there's still daylight left." She murmured softly. And I promise you, I won't be the mentor Sunflower was to me.
Primrosepaw smiled as she heard her mother's name called, and happily touched noses with her. Now that she was an apprentice, she could do lots of apprentice things like leave camp and meet new cats. "Yes please!" she replied to her new mentor's question, "What am I going to learn to hunt? Birds? Mice? Oooh I like mice!" Unable to contain her excitement, she bounced around her mentor, constantly talking.
Smokefeather smiled at the excited apprentice. She seemed eager to get out of camp, and Smokefeather wasn't about to try and change it. Stars, she was more than happy to get out for a bit, herself. It would help get her mind off of needing to break up yet another fight earlier, and Smokefeather was very much looking forward to being able to stretch her legs. Getting Primrosepaw out of camp would also be good for her.
Considering Primrosepaw's question, Smokefeather modded. "Prey will be running after the rain earlier. We'll see what's out there." Smokefeather thought back to her own first day of training, and dearly hoped she wouldn't make such an impression. With the amount of daylight left this wouldn't be a long trip; the creek wasn't that far and would be teeming with prey at this hour. Showing Primrosepaw the territory, a much longer trek than just hunting along the creek, was better left for tomorrow when they were up early and had the daylight to do so.
