Hunting... buddies? [closed]

ooc: setting this the day after the gathering

Emberpaw was bored. Sure, the gathering had been chaotic, but he hadn't been there. And now, he was jealous, because he'd missed out on what would probably be the biggest event of his whole life. He glanced into his den, and called out, "Anyone want to hunt?" He withdrew back into the camp and pricked his ears, hoping he'd get a response and a hunting buddy or two.

Viperpaw had spent much of the night huddled with her family, but had eventually slipped into the apprentice den to get some actual rest. There was only so much fluff and fur she could put up with or she got way too hot, and unfortunately her family had a lot of fur. Blinking her green eyes open, she yawned before slipping from the den.

"I suppose, since I'm up now," she mumbled, licking her chest fur down.

Emberpaw shrugged and grinned with the natural charisma he possessed as he led the way out of camp. “Guilty as charged,” he purred, glancing up at the sky. It was slightly foggy, but that would probably be lifted come afternoon. He glanced at his hunting partner and stopped in no particular spot, just a small area filled with pine trees, like the rest of ShadowClan’s territory. The brown tabby looked at Viperpaw and asked, “Is this a good place?” Without waiting for an answer, he inhaled, scenting the air. His tail flicked happily at the rich and promising prey-scent.

Despite herself, Viperpaw found herself chuckling softly. This could turn out to be exactly what she needed, as although she didn't know Emberpaw well, he appeared to be good company. She felt herself relax a little bit, which she hadn't done in a while.

She nodded, "Smells like it." She sniffed, letting the smells of different prey wash over her. She pinpointed the location of a mouse, dropping into a crouch and swiveling her ears to point it out to her companion. When she went to move towards the little creature, however, her paw must have been placed too hard, as it immediately fled.

Viperpaw failed to catch the mouse! She expends 3 stamina.

Emberpaw opened his jaws as Viperpaw had, drawing in the scent of mouse a second before it scuttled away, and a lizard. He glanced beside him as Viperpaw missed the mouse. “Eh, just bad luck.” His focus went back to the lizard, trying to find the creature. His ears flicked up, acutely targeting the creature’s movements, and he settled down into a crouch. His muscles bunched up and in a single second, he jumped, tail streaming out behind him. The lizard let out a strangled squeak as Emberpaw’s claws met its throat. Scooping it up in his jaws, he trotted back to Viperpaw.

Viperpaw purred, feeling proud of her Clanmate's skillful kill. She wasn't that upset about her escaped mouse. At the very least, they had something to take back to the Clan.

"Good catch. Should we move along a bit and try for more?" She sniffed, but she couldn't smell anything else right in the vicinity.

Viperpaw didn't seem to be upset, which was good. He frowned as she tasted the air, and he did the same. Nothing fresh; a few stale scents, but those would just loop around until they faded. Emberpaw nodded. "Sure. Know any good spots around here?" While she was thinking, he unearthed his lizard, and waited for her response. He wasn't that familiar with this part of the territory. One of the reasons he'd chose this spot in particular was to get a bit more familiar with this bit of the territory.
