Regular [Closed Patrol]

A regular hunting patrol. Ploverpuddle was tasked with taking a hunting patrol out in the territory. It wasn't anything exciting which was alright with him. He looked around the camp his gaze catching two cats he hadn't been out with in a bit. "Raventail! Goldengale! Would you two like to join me for a hunting patrol?" The tom asked.

Goldengale's ears swiveled towards the voice that called her name only a heartbeat before her head rose and she looked towards Ploverpuddle. The tip of her tail twitched slightly as she nodded, rising to her paws after a hearty nudge to Grousefrost's shoulder. "I'll be back later." She whispered, knowing the tom wouldn't hear it but unable to force herself to not say anything. As she trotted over to Ploverpuddle, she shook out her pelt and gave a small half-smile to the cat she had mentored. "I'd be happy to, Ploverpuddle. How are you today?" As she looked to the other tom who would be joining, she lowered her head respectfully. Despite Grousefrost's anger and tension towards Raventail, and her disappointment in the way that everything had come about and been handled, she still respected and cared for her old mentor. "And you, Raventail, I hope today finds you and Dappleshine well?" The silver she-cat had slowly earned Goldengale's trust, but had earned her respect after she discovered that Dappleshine had risked everything to jump into the Gorge after her mate and bring him safely back to shore.

Raventail turned in three parts: first his ears, then his head, then the rest of him. His last patrol with Ploverpuddle had ended in a frantic homeward sprint and nothing to add to the fresh-kill pile. All the more reason to try for a new, better memory. Goldengale’s presence might have complicated things, but Raventail had no desire to bring up past events. If being on speaking terms with his former apprentice was the closest he’d ever get to acceptance, he’d gladly take it. ”Sure,” he called, stretching low to the tips of his forepaws before padding toward his patrolmates. ”I’ve been waiting for a chance to stretch my legs.” At Goldengale’s question, he hesitated. Dappleshine had only started leaving camp within the last few moons. Then Thornstar, Torrentstar—no doubt she’d learned what had happened. Raventail could only regret he hadn’t had the courage to tell her himself. ”As well as we could be,” he said with a shrug. ”How about you? And, um—how’s Grousefrost?” No doubt Grousefrost wouldn’t appreciate him asking, but that couldn’t stop him anymore.

Ploverpuddle could tell there was tension between the two cats but he didn't know what to say on the matter to alleviate anything, but still they needed to get this patrol done regardless of anything that lingers from the past. The tom dipped his head to the two warriors before speaking to them in return. "I am alright Goldengale." The tom said to his former mentor.

The gray warrior turned and lead the two out of the camp, letting them chat along the way or at least attempt at it if they could. He didn't hate the situation, he was glad to keep his mouth shut and let the two of them work out whatever it was that needed to be worked out. It didn't take long for the three to reach the hunting spot. He knew this area hasn't been hunted in lately so hopefully they could have some good luck. He nodded at the other two that they were good to split up from here.

The tom quickly found a rabbit he wanted to hunt. Once he was close enough he took off after it ready to tackle it into the ground.

Raventail hesitated as she asked about Dappleshine, and her head tilted slightly before she recalled seeing how the queen had seemed to be a shadow of her former self, eyes hollow and broken-hearted. With the loss of the first kit that Raventail and she birthed, it appeared as though a landslide of other heartaches had followed the previously RiverClan warrior. She nodded, blinking as the tom asked about Grousefrost. "He's... Managing. It's bee difficult for him, to suddenly go from being a capable warrior who prided himself on his efficiency to losing one of his most important senses, especially her in the moors. He can't hear the flap of the wings of a bird overhead, nor can he listen to the calls of his companions. I've been trying to figure out a way to help.... But how can you teach someone that can't hear your explanation?" She sighed, shaking her head slightly as she followed where Ploverpuddle led. "I'll figure it out though, don't worry. Hopefully once we get him started, he'll be able to do more and more on his own."

It wasn't long before they reached a good hunting spot, and Goldengale nodded to Ploverpuddle as he set off his own way. Waving her tail in a silent farewell to Raventail, she turned in a different direction herself, blue eyes piercing as she scanned for any available prey. Her eyes landed on a quail in the distance, and her gaze lingered for a moment before turning to another, closer bird - a grouse that pecked among the tall grass. She approached silently, paws placed carefully underneath her, until she was close enough to leap - there was no need to chase a bird the way you would a rabbit, if anything it would only lead to failure. Springing towards the bird, her claws connected with it's body as it tried to fly off, and she cut off it's cry with a sharp nip to it's neck. A good start to the hunt.

Ploverpuddle answered a question Raventail hadn’t arrived quickly enough to hear, but otherwise remained silent, waiting patiently as Goldengale spoke. The news wasn’t surprising, though that didn’t make it any easier to hear. Grousefrost had always been almost brutally practical, as quick in mind as in paw. He’d hoped giving the silver tom an apprentice, especially one as energetic as Starlingpaw, might motivate him; in retrospect, it seemed painfully little. He couldn’t think of a way to comfort Goldengale, much less a way to help her or her mate. Every loss was a different beast, and he knew nothing that compared to this. ”I’m sure he will,” he said at last. They set off. He brushed his tail across Goldengale’s side, then hung back, bringing up the rear of their patrol as they left the camp and its worries behind.

Without a word, Ploverpuddle led them to an empty spot flush with prey-scents. He peeled away from the group first in pursuit of a rabbit, followed soon afterward by Goldengale. Raventail watched their departures with a wave of his tail and a soft ”good luck” for each. Then he turned to address the now-empty stretch of land before him. In the distance, he spotted a stringy-looking hare. Its coat, still pale from leaf-bare, stood out against the grasses. His approach went unnoticed. Soon, he was close enough to sprint. Raventail took off, barreling into the hare with his whole weight; he managed to get his claws in its back and his teeth in its neck, and several moments later saw him burying his first catch in a hastily-dug hole.
