here we are again (closed)

It took the apprentice all of around twenty seconds to finish inhaling the hare- perhaps just a little too fast, and perhaps she now had just the slightest belly-ache, but it was absolutely worth it if it meant getting back to her apprentice duties sooner! Or, well, the fun part of the duties, at least. She wasn't looking forward at all to having to remove the ticks from the elders, even if it did need doing.

But learning how to hunt birds, to take down creatures of the sky and enact her swift and terrible vengeance upon them? That was another kind of heaven entirely. "I'm ready!", Morningkit mewed, bouncing on the pads of her paws with unrestrained excitement. "This is way more fun than I thought it'd be. And I thought it'd be pretty fun."

Olivestone chuckled as she took a few moments to bury the remains of their meal before leading the way to a hill closer to the other end of the territory. When she was satisfied with the location, she scented the air, and was pleased to find that she could scent prey birds. She glanced towards the sky to make sure any hawks or eagles weren't hanging around, and began to speak.
"Birds are a bit harder to hunt. Birds have an extremely poor sense of smell, but good eyesight, and good hearing. For them, you'll have to get as close as you can, and rely on your coat pattern to blend into the grass. Our tabby coats, while gray, are great for hunting in tall grass."

She lifted her head and scented the breeze, sparrow scent meeting her nose. She caught sight of the bird a moment later, pecking at the ground, its back turned to her. She slunk through the grass, careful to mask her movement, careful to keep quiet. She approached the sparrow, and when she was close enough, she pounced. Though her movements were precise, she wasn't quick enough, and the sparrow was already in the sky when her paws met the ground again.

Ah, rabbitdung!

She turned back to Morningpaw and returned to where the apprentice was watching. She flicked her tail and shrugged.
"I'm just having an off-day, I guess. Do you want to see if you can catch one?"

Olivestone is attempting to hunt a sparrow. She was not successful.

A slight nod, and Morningpaw crouched down beside Olivestone, taking in her mentor's advice and replaying the moment in her head. Even on an off-day, Olivestone was an excellent hunter (admittedly, she had little to compare the older tabby to), and Morningpaw could learn a lot; she took a moment to summarise,
"So... no need to worry about wind direction, but keep low, blend in, get close, and pounce-- and if they can hear well, maybe do the windy-grass-thing too... is it just me, or does 'keep low, blend in, get close and pounce' apply for everything so far?"

And with a determined look at the same sparrow (which had landed not too far away, seemingly undisturbed by its near-death experience), Morningpaw stilled herself, keeping her tail and body low, slinking through the grass...

Keep low... The apprentice was almost flat along the ground, just a little above it to not cause too much noise- her technique was almost perfect this time, with not a tail to be seen.

Blend in... Her grey fur served her excellently for blending into the tall grass- though not quite as effective as, say, a cream or brown tabby, she was still remarkably well-hidden.

Get close... Morningpaw snuck through the grass, moving with the wind to minimise noise, keeping her whole body still as she prepared to strike...

... and--

--the sparrow flew away before she could pounce. "Oh, come on!"

Morningpaw attempted to hunt the same sparrow. The sparrow wasn't having any of it.
