Rabbits tended to leave their burrows at dawn, and Raventail really didn’t want to return empty-pawed—how could he teach Smallpaw without anything to hunt? Still, as he crossed WindClan’s camp under a sky more black than blue, he wondered if sunrise was a little too early. Not that wondering stopped him. Finding the mass of long, tawny fur belonging to his newest apprentice, he gave Smallpaw a gentle nudge. ”Wake up, it’s time to leave! We’ll head out as soon as you’re ready. Get something to eat if you want, but make sure it’s small—it’s no fun hunting on a full stomach.” Hopefully Smallpaw had woken up enough to process all of that. Raventail blinked down at him once, twice, then stepped away.

Halfway across camp, an idea occurred to him. Rather than walk the rest of the way to the gorse tunnel, he turned back, eyes scanning the camp for a certain gray tabby. ”Olivepaw!” That was…too loud. Lowering his voice with a wince, Raventail said, ”I know it’s early, but how does a patrol sound to you? It's just me and Smallpaw so far.” He’d enjoyed training alongside Grousefrost during his own apprenticeship; hopefully Smallpaw wouldn't mind having a denmate around, if only for today.

Smallpaw groaned as he felt something- or someone- nudge him awake. He opened his blurry eyes to see Raventail prodding him and telling him to get up, and added something about eating a small piece of prey. Smallpaw had no problem with that, he often ate smaller meals due to the fact that if he had a full belly and started getting nervous, he'd end up with a bellyache. It was easier to just eat smaller portions. By the time he came back to focus, Raventail had already disappeared. Smallpaw heaved himself up from his nest and groggily exited the apprentice's den. The sky was almost as dark as it was at night, but in the east the horizon was slowly but steadily growing more blue with the rise of the sun. ' I didn't know that this is what he meant by dawn.' The apprentice thought to himself with a yawn.

Smallpaw quickly padded over to the fresh-kill pile. Of course there were slim pickings, for it was leaf-bare, but he managed to find a small mouse near the bottom of the pile. Before he could take his first bite, a shout startled him, only to find that it was merely Raventail shouting for Olivepaw. Smallpaw hadn't much time to meet the she-cat yet, as he had only been an apprentice for a short while, but Olivepaw seemed as friendly as any other cat. After finishing the mouse he joined Raventail near the camp entrance, assuming that Olivepaw would be joining. He didn't mind, he could use a friend or two. Though it was going to be hard, knowing that a cat other than his mentor would possibly be watching him train. Just the thought of being judged put a knot in his stomach.

Olivepaw had been finishing off a bird, burying the remains as someone shouted her name. She turned abruptly to see Raventail, calling her for a patrol. She trotted over, tail high, and chirped,
"Of course! I'm itching to get out there and run!"
With a smile, she turned her attention to Raventail's apprentice, Smallpaw.
"This is your first time out of camp, right? Nothing beats seeing the sun rise over the moor, and feeling the wind in your fur as you race so fast you feel like you could fly!"
She paused to lick her chest fur, and continued,
"You'll do great, and even if you mess up, it's okay. Everyone messes up sometimes!"

Raventail beamed at Olivepaw’s answer, shoulders settling. ”Same here.” He hadn’t asked her to join in solely for Smallpaw’s benefit; having to train a cat after so long made him a little nervous. A patrol and a teaching patrol differed from each other as much as the moor and the mountains. Leaf-bare complicated things further. He’d had time to move at a comfortable pace during Goldengale’s apprenticeship; with Smallpaw, he couldn’t drag his paws so much. Speaking of dragging his paws— As Olivepaw turned her attention toward Smallpaw, Raventail hurried toward the camp entrance again.

Almost as soon as he’d sat, the pair of apprentices joined him. He got to his feet and stretched, tail curling, one ear tuned to Olivepaw’s encouragements. ”As long as you’re trying, you’ll get it eventually. That’s all that matters, really.” Turning to lead them through the tunnel, he paused. ”You know, I had to train for a moon before I caught my first rabbit.” Granted, much of that moon had passed on a lakeshore and the journey home, but that wasn’t the point. With a flick of his tail, he padded out onto the moor—and promptly broke into a sprint.

By a stroke of luck, they didn’t have to run far. A rabbit sat on the horizon, upwind and unaware. Raventail slowed to a jog, then a walk, then a complete stop, crouching and glancing over his shoulder to make sure he hadn’t lost his apprentice or Olivepaw. ”To catch a rabbit by yourself,” he whispered to them once they’d caught up, ”you need to get as close to it as you can. Where we’re standing, it shouldn’t be able to smell us, but we still need to be quiet. So, first, you creep forward like this.” Still crouched, he took a few shuffling steps. ”Once you think you’re close enough, you run like we just did, and then you pounce.”

The first step of hunting is choosing what type of prey you’re going to hunt from this list. Listed beneath each type of prey are the numbers that will result in a successful catch, organized by season and Clan, with the current season written in bold. For example, say Smallpaw tries to hunt a rabbit; since he’s a WindClan cat hunting in leaf-bare, rolling any number from 1 to 7 would be a catch, while a roll of 8 or higher would be a miss. (Rolling a 10 always results in a miss and a predator encounter, in which you have to pick and fight one of the predators listed here. Normally, the person who rolled the 10 plays the predator; if you roll one in this topic, though, Peridot or I can play it for the sake of showing how these encounters usually go.)

Now, for the actual roll. Once you’ve written your post, hit the “Preview” button at the bottom of the screen. Below the text box on the next screen is the menu that will give you access to the dice rolls, labeled “Dices Roll #1.” Click on the menu and choose “Hunting Dice” from the list of dice, then make sure the number of dice used is set to 1. If your post is finished, hit the “Send” button. Two posts will appear – first yours, then one from Mistpelt showing what number you rolled.

After you see your roll and determine whether you caught or missed your prey (or encountered a predator), all that’s left is to edit your previous post to reflect the result! Regardless of what number you roll, you lose a certain amount of stamina (-5 SP in leaf-bare, -3 SP in all other seasons) for each roll of the Hunting Dice. Most people indicate the stamina loss by putting something like this at the bottom of their post:

That’s it for the hunting system! As one last note, any roll that doesn’t result in a predator encounter will count toward your hunting requirements, even if you miss your prey!

Hearing those words of encouragement, Smallpaw felt a bit better. When he heard Raventail's comment about being trained for a moon before catching his first rabbit, he got surprised. 'I guess even cats as great as the deputy had a tough time at first', he thought, breaking into a run to catch up to the others. Luckily he didn't have much distance to catch up, as Olivepaw and Raventail started slowing down and eventually came to a halt. He mimicked his mentor and crouched beside him to see what he was gazing at. Ahead of the group was a rabbit sitting ahead of them, seemingly oblivious to their presence.

Smallpaw listened as Raventail started whispering directions. He wasn't surprised when he started growing nervous. What did he expect? He knew he was going to have to attempt at catching something. It was a hunting patrol, not a sit and watch patrol. He extra paid attention when he saw Raventail showing him how to stalk up on the rabbit. After his mentor finished, he nodded and hesitantly crept towards the direction of the rabbit, making sure his steps were light and his feet avoided all things that could make noise.

When he felt that he was close enough, Smallpaw sprinted toward the rabbit with the speed only a Windclan cat possesses, and bit down on it's neck. He dropped the lifeless body of the rabbit and looked back at Raventail. "I caught it!" he exclaimed with a smile. He couldn't believe he'd caught it on his first try. Then he started to worry about whether or not he did something wrong. "H-how did i do?" He asked.

Olivepaw followed Raventail out onto the moor, and crouched down as the older cat instructed Smallpaw in what to do in order to hunt. Once Raventail had finished talking, she watched as Smallpaw crouched down, crept towards the rabbit, and once he was close enough, took off towards the rabbit, easily catching up and dispatching it with a quick bite. When Smallpaw looked back towards them, she waved her tail in happiness, and called back, "You did great!"

She then turned and sniffed the air, catching rabbit scent nearby. Catching the scent, she crept towards it, seeing a rabbit nibbling on some grass poking through the snow. Once she was close enough, she took off towards it. The rabbit had no time to react and quickly fell to her claws, and she killed it with a quick bite, before hauling it back to where the group had gathered.

As far as demonstrations went, his hadn’t been much; really, he was just glad his whispering hadn’t scared the rabbit off. Smallpaw slowly crept past, each step almost painfully deliberate. Raventail hunkered down further to watch. Smallpaw inched closer…closer… All at once, he took off toward the rabbit. In a matter of seconds, it was dead. There would be many, many hunting lessons in the future yet—how to tell which way the wind blew, how to properly run like a WindClanner, how to catch things that weren’t rabbits—but for now: ”Perfect!” Raventail crowed, springing out of his crouch. With a slight bounce in his step, he padded ahead to meet Smallpaw while Olivepaw called her own complements from behind. ”That’s pretty good for your first try.”

When he looked back, Olivepaw was gone—in pursuit of her own prey, Raventail realized. Unlike Smallpaw, there was no need to supervise her; she was almost a warrior. Still, he didn’t want to leave Smallpaw unattended. He waited on shifting paws, humming quietly to himself, until Olivepaw returned with a rabbit of her own in her jaws. This was proving to be a surprisingly fruitful hunt for leaf-bare. ”Nice one,” he meowed, voice soft but bright.

A slight motion, accompanied by fresh rabbit-scent, caught his attention. Near the mouth of one of the moor’s many tunnels, another rabbit had sat up to look around. Raventail all but threw himself into the snow, eyes darkening. The chill fell away as he focused. He pounced a heartbeat sooner than he should have. The rabbit turned—too late; he pinned it down hardly more than a whisker’s length from the tunnel, and a moment later, he was proudly carrying it back to the group. Missed catches didn't fluster him as much as they once would have, but missing in front of his own apprentice, well… At least he didn't have to worry about that yet.

Raventail attempted to catch Rabbit, using 5 stamina. The attempt was successful!

I'm so sorry i completely forgot this existed ;-; also i'm writing this pretty late so don't mind any errors or if something doesn't make sense))

Smallpaw let out a sigh of relief when he heard words of approval from both Olivepaw and Raventail. 'Maybe apprenticeship wouldn't be so hard after all,' he thought, sniffing at his rabbit. By the time he looked back up, Olivepaw was coming back to the group with rabbit held tightly in her jaws. The apprenticed looked at her surprised at how quiet she must've been, because he didn't even notice that she had run off. His attention was turned to his mentor as he watched Raventail crouch and focus on something in front of him. Prey, Smallpaw assumed. He watched as he lept out of site, then came back holding a rabbit. "It looks like we're having good luck today." He commented before a scent caught his nose. 'Rabbit!' He followed the scent until he saw it, sitting on top of a small lump of dirt.

Smallpaw crouch down, trying to remember how Raventail had shown him. He grew closer, the rabbit completely oblivious to his presence. When he felt that he was close enough, he jumped into the air with a mighty leap and landed squarely on the rabbit. He picked up his catch and went back to the group, triumphantly dropping it on top of where he'd left his other rabbit. He couldn't believe that he'd caught two rabbits on his very first hunting patrol!
