Crowspirit sat near the camp entrance, waiting for his apprentice to join him. He was eager to get going, to show his daughter the moors and teach her to hunt. This mentorship would be a good one, he could already tell. Petalpaw was a willing learner, and seemed nearly as excited as he was.

Once his daughter was in sight, he called out. “Petalpaw! Come on, we’re headed outside of camp today.”

Petalpaw bounded towards her dad with a sparkle in her sky blue eyes. She was so excited to finally be out of camp and with her father as a mentor she knew she would be safe. What are we doing today, dad? She mewed as he white pelt shined in the sunlight of the new day.

Crowspirit grinned, a playful glimmer in his eye. Petalpaw seemed so much like Spotlake at times. “Hunting! Come on, we’ll get the crouch and running down first, then use those to catch some rabbits. Now, first task, is to keep up with me. You can’t really do it in camp, but to run like a WindClan cat the key is to really open up your legs and not be afraid of falling. Stretch and cover as much ground as possible in each bound. Come on!”

With that, he leaped forward, running across the moors. He didn’t go quite as fast as usual, for his apprentice’s sake, but the exhilaration of the first time never truly left. He loved to run, and feel the harsh winds of the moor ruffling his pelt, see the grass blurring to the sides of him. Soon he slowed, looking back to see just how far Petalpaw was behind him.

Petalpaw did as Crowspirit said and ran after him but she couldn’t get the position right as the little app was too excited. Her run looked more like a bound as she happily followed her father. She looked around the territory enjoying all the smells and scenery.

Crowspirit chuckled as his daughter caught up. “You’ll get it in time, kitten. But that wasn’t bad for a first try! Now, crouch down in the grass. We’re near prey.” His voice fell to a whisper, indicating his daughter to do the same. “What kind do you think it is? You might remember from the fresh-kill pile, though prey smells a little different dead than alive.”

Petalpaw opened her mouth slightly and let the prey scent come. She looked up at her dad with a smile. “Is it a rabbit, dad? she asked in a whisper looking back at where the prey scent was coming from.

Crowspirit nodded in approval, proud of his daughter, and his ears priced as said rabbit came up the rise and into view. “Alright, kit, stay here and I’ll flush it towards you. This is the WindClan method of group hunting. Your job is to stay hidden until the rabbit’s almost at your paws, then pounce. Watch out for the hind legs. Those nursery tales of cats being blinded by rabbits have a ring of truth to them. Stay to the front, get your teeth around the neck, finish the job.”

With that, he left Petalpaw’s side, making a wide arc around the rabbit until it was between him and his apprentice. Suddenly he charged, yowling, leaping to the right and left to chase it towards Petalpaw. “Now!”

Petalpaw waited and when he said to go, she pounced.

Petal caught the rabbit in her jaws and bit down killing it in one bite. “Poor bunny!” she said looking at her father with teary eyes.

Crowspirit felt like his chest would burst with pride. His daughter’s first hunt, successful! As he approached Petalpaw to congratulate her, however, he noticed the expression on her face, and his own face dropped. It was normal for most young apprentices to feel guilty about their first kill, and he searched for the right words.

“Aw, Petalpaw, c’mere. Don’t be upset. We’re cats, we have to hunt to survive. StarClan put this prey here for us to hunt and feed our Clan. Death is a part of life, but not the end.” He put a paw around her, looking at the rabbit. “Think of what this rabbit probably did in it’s life. It created more rabbits to feed us. It ran the moors and had a good life. And now, it’s given up it’s life so that we can live. That’s why we always thank StarClan for our prey, and never treat it with disrespect. It’s why we kill our prey as quickly and painlessly as we can, instead of toying with it. And even though this rabbit died, it will go on to feed our elders and kits, and help the Clan thrive. Think of death... not as an end of life, but a celebration of it.”

He was surprised how easily his words came, and he smiled softly at his daughter. “Don’t be afraid of death, Petalpaw. But live every day as if you’ll die the next, so that when your time comes, you can join the ranks of StarClan satisfied with your life. Now, why don’t we carry this rabbit back to camp, and you can show your sisters the techniques you used?”

Petalpaw instantly cheered up at the sound of her sisters. “Yes! Let’s go show them!” she mewed picking up the rabbit and bounding towards camp.
