One More Light

A dream.

She felt like she'd been living a dream. Each day slipped by aimlessly and hopelessly, the world around her seeming to have lost it's purpose...

Or was she the one who'd lost her purpose?

Silent Snows found herself slipping away to the quiet side of camp each night to watch the stars she'd once worshiped and later forsaken. This was her life now, watching the camp move forward without her.

Burnt had abandoned her for the cause.

Her father was dead.

Her mother, long gone.

Her sister had shut her out and her kits were grown enough that they didn't need her anymore.

She was alone.

Alone with the stars.

Maybe it was time to change that...?

Something in Silent Snows whispered of change, of growth and renewal that would come with the passing of time. She'd been alone for so long... maybe it was finally time for her to do something about it.

Getting to her paws, the queen padded soundlessly towards the medicine cat's den.

She may be suffering, but it didn't mean her sister had to.

Peeking through the ferns sheltering the den, Silent Snows spoke hesitantly.

"... Mothpaw?"

Mothpaw's ears twitched at the sound of a familiar voice behind her, one that almost seemed to belong to a ghost for how rare the sound had become (well, it had always been that way, but even more so now). At first, she continued what she'd been doing - organizing the herb stores, adding the gains from her most recent patrol where they belonged - but soon after, it was done, and she had to face the figure behind her.

...She really didn't want to. The mix of grief and stress and lack of sleep were catching up to her, of course. But more importantly than that, Silent Snows' words hung in her mind, and while Mothpaw had long since forgiven her, she wasn't ready to forget just yet. She wasn't sure she'd ever be ready for that, but she wasn't ready to confront her sister, either.

Right. Silent Snows was her sister. Funny, she thought to herself, because they may as well have been strangers now.

But she didn't say that. Instead, she rattled off the first excuse to come to mind. "Sorry, Silent Snows, but I have to go. Herbs aren't going to gather themselves, are they?" she asked, pointedly ignoring the recently-gathered herbs now sorted in one half of the den; and set off out of camp without looking back.

She would face Silent Snows. Eventually.

But not today.

A pang of ice shot through her heart at Mothpaw's words.

The sleek she-cat couldn't blame her. The blood that used to tie them together had soured and turned bitter the day Silent had chosen to follow Burnt. The day she finally screamed those words that would change their lives forever.

The words that had been clawing at the back of her mind for moons.

She didn't regret it. That decision had given her children, and a tom who'd loved her and believed in her... but she missed her sister.

Blue eyes watched forlornly as the dark tabby pelt of her only littermate grew smaller and smaller.

Maybe she'd missed her chance.
