Hunting for Sparkpaw (closed)

Making his way into the apprentice den, Daisyflame found Sparkpaw's pelt among the other bundles of sleeping apprentice's and gently prodded the younger tom's side. "Sparkpaw, wake up," the tom mewed softly. Tonight, he'd take his new apprentice on a hunting patrol to teach him the basics of how to hunt as a ShadowClan cat.

Sparkpaw grunted rather moodily as the prodding roused her from her dreams. She opened her eyes and looked up at her mentor standing over her, and she bared her teeth at him in a tired half-snarl, though no noise accompanied it. Knowing she needed to wake up lest she get into trouble, she rose up to her paws and stretched out her limbs before padding out of the den and up to Daisyflame's side. Once she reached his side, her stomach began to hungrily growl, and her mouth started to water when she spotted the large pile of fresh-kill at the end of camp. "We can start training after I eat," she meowed simply, not looking at the older tom, beginning to make her way over to the fresh-kill pile, her eyes set on the large and plump mouse resting on top.

Daisyflame hated being strict, seeing as though being such a way made training more of a chore than anything, but Sparkpaw's attitude wasn't something he could ignore. Following the young she-cat out of the den, Daisyflame trotted ahead of little ball of fluff and stopped in front of her so that she couldn't go any further.

"Not after the way you just acted. You'll be eating after we hunt," the large warrior mewed sternly to his granddaughter. She knew Thornbriar had some interesting personality traits, but didn't think her own kits would hold them as well, much less not have learned some manners by now...

Sparkpaw halted, nearly reaching the fresh-kill pile, and turned around to look at Daisyflame in a bit of surprise. Immediately she wanted to retort back to him, to tell him he couldn't keep her from eating if she really wanted to, but her parents' voices suddenly filled her mind. She knew exactly what each of them would've said had they heard their conversation.

"You'd better listen to him, lump. I can and will put you back in that nursery for another moon."

"Now, I know ya didn't just disrespect my former mentor like that. Ya better tone down that sparky attitude of yours."

Ugh. She didn't want to have to deal with Thornstar's wrath. Or Sans' insufferable puns.

Turning back around and walking back over to Daisyflame's side, she looked up at him with the same expressionless countenance. "I apologize," she meowed simply.

Waiting for another snarky remark, Daisyflame found himself surprised when she simply apologized. So she did have manners... Such a stoic apology from the apprentice probably wasn't very genuine, but he wasn't going to complain. At least she'd had the decency to do so in the first place, instead of causing more trouble.

"Apology accepted," Daisyflame mewed softly and gave the she-cat a dip of his head. "Now, let's get going," he added, and made his way out of the camp entrance with Sparkpaw at his side.

The two of them padded through the territory for a little ways until Daisyflame finally spoke again. "So, do you happen to know anything about hunting already?" the large tom asked, curious as to if her parents or other clanmates had shared any knowledge on the matter with her already.

Sparkpaw huffed softly at the question, rolling her yellow eyes in a bit of irritation. ”Yes. The Great Poppyheart made sure I knew all the basics before I left the nursery.” She had to admit, she was glad she knew as much about hunting as she does now in anticipation for her first day of training, as she was now capable of practicing the technique on real prey instead of having to listen to any lectures. Not that she was ever going to give her father’s brother the pleasure of knowing he actually helped her in the most annoying way possible.... ”Shall I try to catch something?” she asked, not wishing for a repeat of the event from earlier that morning. That would grant her a one-way trip to LectureClan with her parents.

Listening to the apprentice, he was glad that Poppyheart had tought her some basic skills, which meant training should go smoother, or so he hoped. "Why don't you show me what you know first, then we'll get to hunting" he mewed. He didn't want to seem as though he was doubting her previously learned skills, but the last thing he needed was for something to go wrong.

With a deep inhale and a rather loud and exasperated sigh, making it clear to her mentor that she truly felt she didn't need to prove herself knowledgeable, she lowered herself to the ground in a hunter's crouch. Quickly sweeping the area before her with her gaze, she quickly spotted a mouse searching for food next to a rock, and satisfaction began to swell in her chest. She would show Daisyflame that when she says she knows the basics, she knows the basics. Narrowing her eyes in rebellious glee, she slowly stalked towards the furry brown critter, making sure not to step down on any particularly crunchy pine needles or twigs that had fallen from the towering trees surrounding the marshes.

Once she deemed herself close enough to pounce over the bundle of gray mushrooms separating herself from her target, she gave the tip of her bushy tail a satisfied flick at Daisyflame before bundling up her muscles and pouncing, arching over the fungi. Claws outstretched, her large forepaws landed on the mouse's back before it even knew what had happened, her weight crushing its spine instantly before it could utter a noise. With a satisfied grunt, Sparkpaw bent down to collect the rodent into her mouth and trotted back to her mentor with a very smug expression on her face. She dropped the fresh-kill directly on her paws, making absolutely sure he could feel her successfully catch as well as see it, then she sat down before him with a complacent upward tilt of her head. "There. I showed you what I can do."

Sparkpaw caught a Mouse, costing 3 stamina.

Glad that Sparkpaw knew how to hunt, Daisyflame didn't think that he needed to go into much more detail on the matter, unless the she-cat had any questions for him, which he doubted would happen.

"Good job," the warrior mewed. He didn't personally enjoy the level of sass he was receiving from the young she-cat, but as long as she didn't say anything disrespectful, there wasn't much he could do. "Go catch another piece of prey and meet back here," he instructed, and with that, padded off to hunt himself.

Soon enough, he caught the scent of a mouse, and stalking forward, he waited a few moments, his haunches wiggling back and forth in calibration. Just a little longer... then it was all his.

Pouncing, the tom's big paws landed squarely onto the mouse's plump shoulders. With a swift bite to the neck before it could let out a squeal, he'd successfully caught a piece of prey. 'Not a bad way to start the evening,' he thought to himself, wishing every time he hunted he'd been this successful.

Daisyflame attempted to catch a mouse and was successful. -3 SP

Thoroughly pleased with herself that she had convinced her mentor she knew what she was doing when it came to hunting, Sparkpaw turned and resumed her search for more prey. It didn't take her long to find herself padding closer to the marshes, where she spotted a little green frog perched on top of a rock near the bank. She wrinkled her nose with a soft hiss. She hated the taste of frog. She had no idea how ShadowClanners could stoop so low as to eat disgusting, slimy RiverClan food. Instead of trying to hunt it down, she instead inhaled deeply before letting out a sharp yowl, instantly startling the frog into leaping into the murky water.

Nodding in satisfaction, she turned away from the marshes to search for something with a bit more fur and a bit less mucus. Halting in her tracks, her yellow gaze locked onto a creature she had never seen before. It was grayish-brown, much larger than a mouse, but its fur looked just as short. It had a large, plump body and abnormally tall ears. It looked delicious!

Licking her lips, Sparkpaw crouched down into her hunting position and stalked slowly towards the large mouse-like creature, her smoky black coat hiding her well in the darkness. Once she was close enough, she pounced and landed on its back, but she didn't expect the mouse-like creature to fight back. It hopped around, trying to buck its attacker off, but Sparkpaw dug into its plump sides tightly with her claws and aimed a fierce bite to the back of its neck. It went down, and she actually had to use her entire body to pin it down while she aimed for a killing bite to its throat. It finally stopped kicking and fell limp, and she lifted her head away from its throat, panting a little at the unexpected tussle. Just wait until Daisyflame gets an eyeful of this! A brand-new species of giant mouse no cat has ever seen before! I think I'll call it ... a big-eared swamp mouse!

Padding back towards the spot where he'd left Sparkpaw, Daisyflame set down his kill at his paws and patiently waited for his apprentice to return. Hopefully she was going alright with her hunting, seeing as though she didn't seem like the one to come back empty jawed. If anything, he'd simply wait a little longer for her to return, since they weren't on any time crunch.

Sparkpaw was sitting before her captured prey with her tail wrapped around her paws, waiting for her mentor to return, wearing one of the smuggest looks that had ever graced the face of a ShadowClan cat. It seemed he had managed to catch himself a little mouse. How common. It was nothing compared to the sheer size of the big-eared swamp mouse that lay before her. In fact, it was just as big as she was, if not a little larger. What an incredible feat to have caught fresh-kill that was even bigger than yourself! "Impressive, I know. I wouldn't be surprised if Thornstar makes me a warrior straight away after such a magnificent catch of a completely brand-new species of mouse. The big-eared swamp mouse is no easy feat to take down for common cats like you, but for strong and confident cats like me, it was simply kit's play."
