Hunting in the Trees(CLOSED)

In the brink of dawn, Acornfall was delving deep into her mind. She was recovering from the flood, physically and emotionally. Acornfall had almost no friends, and she was surprised that she was given an apprentice in Swallowpaw before the warrior was even ready. Now, Acornfall knew that she had to teach Swallowpaw how to be a warrior, step by step. The ginger she-cat padded towards the apprentice den, seeing the apprentices, young and old, soundly sleeping. ”Swallowpaw, it’s time to wake up.” She nudged the young tom gently. ”It’s time for your training.” The she-cat paused, waiting for the cream tom to wake up.

Swallowpaw groaned as a paw dug into his flank, beckoning him to wake up. Instead of doing so, like any other apprentice would, he curled up tighter in an attempt to return to his peaceful slumber. "No, Maplepaw, I don't want to hear another one of your mousebrained puns.." He mumbled angrily, covering his face with his bushy tail. He expected an annoying, high-pitched squeal, followed by more prodding, but it never came. To his surprise, the sweetest voice floated into his ears; a voice that could only belong to a Starclan cat. "Swallowpaw, it's time to wake up. It's time for your training," the voice was as smooth as honey, and as soft as the moss that lined the cream tabby's nest. Instantly, his head shot up, earnestly looking around for the owner of such a magnificent voice. 

His eyes landed on the pretty ginger she-cat standing before him; the only other one awake, for that matter. Swallowpaw's heart did a flip as he gazed upon her beautiful, silky ginger fur and her emerald green eyes. Oh Starclan. This gift from above was his mentor? The cream tom practically leaped from his nest and gave his flank a few licks to try and seem presentable. "Training? Er, yes, training. I'll be right there," He smiled, as charmingly as he could, and quickly bounded after her as they left the apprentices' den. Too busy soaking in her beauty, he failed to notice a rock jutting out from the ground and promptly tripped right in front of her, landing in the dirt. His pelt flushed with heat as he tried to think of something to say that would save him from crippling embarrassment.

"A-Ah! I think you should take me to the medicine den. I might've just broken my leg...falling for you."

Nailed it.

Once Acornfall heard Swallowpaw’s response, she padded out the den, seeing the young apprentice dashing out of the den in front of her.  The cream tom then promptly stumbled and fell right in front of her.  Instinctively, she dashed towards him, worried about his safety.  ”Are you okay?” she asked the apprentice.

”I think I broke my leg...”

No. He couldn’t have. Not when he just became an apprentice, not before he could hunt once. Before the she-cat could panic even more, a more logical voice in her head asked, If he broke his leg, wouldn’t he be screaming in pain right now? This thought soothed her, as she realized that he was just joking around. She smiled, and waved for her apprentice to follow.

Concern. Amusement. A smile. Yes! His brilliant, genius plan had worked! Swallowpaw was practically beaming as he quickly got on his paws and trotted after Acornfall, his chest puffed out in pride. It wouldn't be long before she was swooning for him. He couldn't wait to tell Sandpaw of his success; just like him, his brother strove to be the charmer in Skyclan as well. He would be so jealous when he told him! Purring, the cream tabby sped up a bit to catch up with his mentor, and was eventually walking side by side with her. It took everything in his power not to lose himself in her, lest he wanted to make a fool of himself again. "So, Acornfall," He said, smirk dawning on his face, "What will we be doing first? Hunting? Fighting? Getting to know each other?" 

Acornfall could see that Swallowpaw seemed visibly excited about something, and she could infer from what she knew that it was about something she did. The ginger she-cat saw the cream tom right next to her, surprising her how quickly he caught up to her. ”We are going hunting today,” she told Swallowpaw, with an aura emanating from her that was not there before. ”Listen closely to small noises. They are signs that something is there.” She had a feeling that she knew what kind of cat Swallowpaw was, but she wasn’t one to make assumptions. I have to learn more about him before I can truly know, she decided.

”I’m really feline a connection between us right now.”

Acornfall grinned and snorted at the pun, feeling genuinely amused.  The ginger she-cat knew that Swallowpaw was trying to flirt with her.  Thanks to her best friend Crowpaw, she could come back with the best counter.

Crowpaw.  It had been so long that she almost forgot.  The murderous tendencies of Shade were on display that day, killing another cat, who coincidentally also had Crow as a prefix.  It’s a new day, she reminded herself.  You can’t change the past, but you can change the future.  That was one of the best pieces of wisdom that she ever told herself.  Focusing back on the hunting patrol, the warrior crouched down, her tail down and her body weight even.  ”This is a hunting crouch.  It is an important part of hunting - obviously.”  She emphasized the last word, as a hunting crouch is needed to hunt.  ”I can show you first, then you go.”  

Acornfall bounded up a nearby tree, gazing at what looked like a squirrel down below.  She crouched on a spruce branch, carefully balancing on the uneven area.  She snuck up closer... closer... closer... caught it.  The ginger she-cat bit at the small rodent’s neck, killing it.  She leaped gracefully from the branch, the squirrel in her mouth.  ”And that’s how you hunt!  You should also bury your catch so other predators can’t steal it.” She dug a hole, placing the dead squirrel in the hole before covering it back up.  ”Now it’s your turn!  Perhaps you can do better than me,” she teased.  If he was planning to win her heart, she will play hard-to-get, no doubt.

Acornfall uses 3 stamina to catch a squirrel. Hunt was a success!

When Swallowpaw caught the bird, Acornfall had to smile.  ”I have to admit, that was a good catch.  Just remember to bury your catch, so no creature steals it.”  The ginger she-cat suddenly noticed another sparrow nearby, landing on the ground near her.  She got into her hunting crouch and started to stalk the small bird.  When she was a fox-tail away from it, she pounced.  Unfortunately, the bird saw her and flew away at the last second. Sighing, she walked back towards Swallowpaw. ”You won’t catch every piece of prey. Everycat makes mistakes sometimes. If every cat caught every piece of prey it saw, we may have run out of prey by leaf-bare!” the ginger she-cat joked. StarClan, she was having the time of her life.

Acornfall failed to catch a bird, while costing 3 stamina.

Although Acornfall was disappointed by not catching the bird, she felt better when Swallowpaw offered a mouse to her.  He doesn’t know any better, she thought when the cream tom dropped the mouse at her feet.  ”Thank you so much for the mouse, but it will go to the fresh-kill pile either way, will it not?” she replied.  She really felt flattered by the gift, and she tried her best to make it show.  She had never had much interaction with her clan since Crowpaw ... went to StarClan, and although her pelt still glistened in the moonlight, nobody noticed.  At least, until today.

The fact that she could maintain a balance between charm and maturity was almost insane to think about.  She had wisdom to tell others, but she could easily be an attractive, young she-cat who flirts with a lot of toms.  The ginger she-cat pushed the thoughts out of her mind for a few seconds, so she could catch a thrush that landed on a tree.  She quietly climbed up the tree, and stalked the thrush from the tree over.  When the thrush was looking Acornfall’s way, she stopped.  When it began to peck at the tree again, Acornfall started sneaking forward.  She crouched down to avoid detection again, and got a little closer until she was in pouncing distance.

Unfortunately, she noticed that the thrush escaped from her clutches.  Internally frustrated, she tried to lighten the mood.  ”Guess my attractiveness alone can’t catch birds,” she said wittily.  ”Are you catching more prey?” she asked her apprentice.

Acornfall failed to catch a bird, costing 3 stamina.
