Cold Pawprints [Open Patrol]

Hawkstrike stretched before heading towards the entrance of camp. Nobody had given him patrol duty that day, but with the frozen weather and how unwilling most warriors appeared to be to go out, he guessed none would mind if he decided to help out the clan through some extra prey for the fresh-kill pill and recheck the borders.

Plus, he was not the kind of warrior that could just sit still and do nothing all day, such thing eventually became tedious and boring for him. With a deep sigh he turned around right as he took his first step outside “Anyone up for a patrol?” He didn’t mind to go out alone…but maybe there would be a cat or two willing to go out with him and improve his chances of catching prey. Just because hunting was not one of his strong points didn’t mean he was going to admit it.

Spottedleap was the youngest and newest warrior, but that didn't stop him from being confident. Perhaps too confident. He was shameless about sleeping in the middle of the camp while all the other warriors hunted, patrolled, or trained their apprentices. At this moment, he had been curled up in a stray patch of sun just outside the warriors' den when he heard Hawkstrike's call. His amber eyes opened and he accidentally made direct eye contact with the older warrior. Briefly, he considered closing them again and going back to sleep. It was a just question, right? Definitely not an order. But he reconsidered dealing with the consequences from the clan leadership after rumors of his unrivaled laziness got around, so he stood, stretched, and trotted over to Hawkstrike. "That's funny, I was just thinking of going out for a quick hunt." He meowed, very obviously lying through his teeth.

Hawkstrike nodded respectfully at Spottedleap as he stepped forwards. Being the owner of a great silver tongue and holder of many secrets and lies still to be discovered, Hawkstrike easily picked up on the lie he was telling, but he decided to let it slide. He might be young and rumors circulated of his laziness, but at least a couple snowflakes were not holding him back, unlike other cats…

He waited a bit longer, wanting to see if there was anyone else willing to go, but after some time he decided that it might not be the case. If the other cats changed their mind later on then they would need to catch up with them “Let’s get going while the sun is high, we have a better chance of finding prey right now than when it gets lower and the cold scares the off” He said almost to himself before walking out of camp, his paws leaving a small track on the soft snow.

The camp wasn’t even out of sight when his ears started to move and nose worked to catch even the faintest of scents. Just because hunting wasn’t his strong point didn’t mean he didn’t know how to track down prey. If anything, it was all the other way around, having to find prey he had lost in a failed attempt earlier.

Spottedleap took full advantage of Hawkstrike's delay, grooming down his pelt while they waited for anyone else who would be interested. He considered grabbing a small piece of prey, too, but he'd already eaten that day and he decided it would be better to restore the clan's fresh-kill pile first. He gave a wordless nod to Hawkstrike as they began to head out, tail high as he strolled alongside the older warrior. Hunting was more for passing the time than a chore for him. He just had to remember to keep an eye out for the border.

His torn ear flicked in the direction of a muffled bird call. Without a warning, he darted off to find the source, his casual attitude dropped in a heartbeat. A blue jay sat on a low-hanging branch, pecking at the bark despite the thin layer of snow. Spottedleap didn't pause to aim, instead springing onto the tree trunk and then launching off to snag the jay as it attempted to flee. He brought it down to the ground and broke its neck with a quick nip. The orange tom picked up his small prize and headed back to Hawkstrike to bury it along their path so he wouldn't forget to pick it up on the way back to camp.
