Hailsong had taken her apprentice for a border patrol that Jaystar ordered them to do. With the recent events of the Gathering and an unsolved meeting, Riverclan still had to defend the lands of the Gorge for themselves. It was hunting ground for them and it had to stay that way. The dilute calico walked through the territory of the waterfall, making sure to mark every place and check there was no Windclan warrior near. If some of those WindClanner was stupid enough to cross her territory, she would make sure to make them pay.

"Eaglepaw, stay close to me... I think I smell something nasty approaching..." She suddenly hissed in her apprentice's ear. There was no doubt, her nose wasn't lying. Near them, a cat from the moors was coming too near their home. She had to be ready. With a quick movement, and guiding the light-furred she-cat apprentice as well, she hid in a bush, covering her scent as best as she could.

Eaglepaw was not very pleased when she and Hailsong were ordered by Jaystar to go do a border patrol- at the Gorge, of all places. She was aware of the recent events with WindClan- she had overheard apprentices and warriors gossipping about the subject- so she knew why she had to do it, she just didn't like the Gorge itself. There never seemed to be any tranquility; you ran the risk of approaching a WindClan cat, the water's roaring noise was irritable, and it was good for nothing but hunting. Still, she had to follow the leader's orders and make sure no WindClan cats were intruding. 

The pale tabby jumped as her mentor suddenly hissed in her ear, but followed her orders and stayed nearby, her eyes narrowing and examining her surroundings. Eaglepaw could quickly pick up an approaching WindClan scent and followed Hailsong into the bush. Her eyes peered at what she could see and waited until they could spot their target.

Barleytuft's stomach growled as he loped across the moor in search of prey. A bitter wind seemed to have forced all the prey back into their homes, and so the warrior's plans of hunting were going poorly. The sandy WindClan warrior turned his narrow head towards the Gorge which divided WindClan's territory from RiverClan, and immediately he stopped to consider his options. His stomach twisted at the thought of hunting in that area which was currently so disputed, but... Brindlestar had stated her position clearly at the Gathering. She said she would be keeping the current borders, and that meant WindClan had the Gorge.

I'll just be careful and try not to run into anyone, Barleytuft thought. If Flamewish were still around, she'd understand... Immediately the tom pushed away the thought and began to bound towards the Gorge, carefully watching for the precarious edge that had spelled disaster for cats of all Clans, somehow. The WindClan warrior took a deep breath as he entered the disputed territory, but scents of prey were richer, and the tom searched around hopefully for something to take home to his Clan.

From her hiding spot, the she-cat watched the controversial territory and waited for the tom to show up, hunting in the territory of another clan. She let out a soft hiss of disdain and without second thoughts, the experienced warrior rushed to the trespasser at full speed, tackling him with her small body. The she-cat unsheathed her claws as she faced the intruder with narrowed, furious eyes. "You're not welcome here, WindClanner. This land still belongs to my clan. Run away now. It's the only thing you are good at." Hailsong said with anger. Usually, she wouldn't have picked up a fight but she hated Windclan intruders after the recent events of the Gathering. This clan didn't deserve anything but her claws.

Hailsong used Run-and-Tackle, dealing 11 + 3 damage and costing 10 stamina.

Eaglepaw's gaze retreated back and forth from Hailsong to their surroundings in front of them with a feeling she could not describe. It wasn't quite fear, but it wasn't excitement, either. Her light blue eyes simply disappeared under the widening blacks of her pupils, waiting for something to come out.

The pale apprentice jumped out of the bush the moment her mentor did, her fur fluffed up and body alert. Her anxiety was the only thing that caused her to hesitate to run after the intruder and teach her a lesson, but soon after she too joined into the commencing battle, claws unsheathed. Between the two warriors, all Eaglepaw could do was lash out with her paws.

Barleytuft had only just began to lower his defense when suddenly a fishy scent hit his scent glands, and an instant later a sturdy body slammed into his slender one. The WindClan warrior went sprawling across the ground and immediately forgot his hunger, finding both fear and anger in its stead. The RiverClan she-cat had already puffed up and loomed over him, warning him not to be there. Barleytuft scrambled to his paws and launched himself back at the she-cat without a moment's hesitation, letting out a snarl of fury as he reared up to lash his claws furiously at the RiverClan warrior's face.

Suddenly another pale shape appeared from the brush and slashed at him from the side. Barleytuft jerked away, hissing with pain as the RiverClan apprentice's claws scored his shoulder, but he quickly brought his claws up the other warrior's neck, slashing a bit closer too her throat than he would normally have liked. This is just a border skirmish. She wasn't entirely wrong when she had spoken; she was going to defend the land a lot more fiercely than he would have liked. Barleytuft spat at them, readying for another attack, "I didn't attack you! I don't understand why you RiverClan cats go looking for fights all the time - and why you teach your apprentices to do the same!"

The only reaction of the she-cat was to hiss back by the attack and words of the WindClanner. What was his problem?! He drove his claws to her neck! The dilute calico she-cat decided to strike one more before opening her mouth and she reared up in her hind legs in an attempt to look bigger and scarier and then slammed the tom's forehead with her claws. She took a defensive pose, the fur of her back bristling furiously. "And I don't understand why you WindClanners fight like you are going to kill! I'm merely doing what the Code says and apprentices have to do the same. You're a trespasser and it's my duty to challenge you, scum! If you don't want to fight then run or we will make you." The she-cat warned in an attempt to not prolong this battle for too long. The warrior didn't want her apprentice to get hurt.

Hailsong used Rear-up to Slash, dealing 14 damage and costing 15 stamina.

As her sharp claws dug into the WindClanner's fur, Eaglepaw could feel herself trembling at the sight before her. She had gone to the last Gathering and had been aware of the hostility between the four Clans, but she had not realized how aggressive they were to each other until now. Did skirmishes like this always happen, where someone was at the risk of unnecessary harm over land or territory? The concept seemed so stupid to the apprentice. 

Despite her doubts, Eaglepaw knew she could prove her utmost loyalty to her Clan right here, right then. Unwillingly, but for her Clan, the pale tabby clawed at the tom's exposed soft underbelly once he reared up to attack her mentor.

Barleytuft felt angered by the RiverClan's warrior's insinuation that he and his Clanmates fought like a bunch of rogues - he hadn't even meant to hit her that close to her throat! If her glory-seeking apprentice hadn't attacked him right when he was striking then his hit wouldn't have been off and nearly become dangerous. And they sure wouldn't have been in the fight at all if they hadn't started it. As if to make things worse, the apprentice raked at his belly while he tried to duck and dodge beneath the warrior's blows. The older she-cat's words rang in his ears, and the stinging in his belly and head from their combined attacks let him know he was far outmatched. She gave him the choice to run, and he planned to take it.

With one last swipe at the she-cats to force them back, Barleytuft began to back away, spitting, "Fine. Enjoy your hunt, fox-heart. I hope you catch crowfood." The sandy WindClan warrior then quickly turned and fled back towards camp, ignoring the stinging of his wounds. Stupid RiverClan. Why do they have to make everything so difficult for us?
