| Rift watched as her sister leaped for the tail and grinned. Before she could say anything, though, some strange, scarred tom padded up. Bounding over to him, she grinned up at his face, waving her tail. "Hi! I'm Rift!" Then she whirled to jump at Wolf's tail as the other she-cat dangled it from the rafters, her paws brushing it before she landed neatly on all four paws. "I did it!" ______________________________________ |

| Mao scrambled hastily after Rift. Climbing the soft wood was easy enough; her claws, while tiny, were needle sharp. As she ascended into the upper layers of the barn, she couldn't help glancing back down to the mother and littermates they had left behind. Her tail twitched uneasily at the disapproving tone of Xuexi's words. "Rift, Mama wants us to go down..." Of course, her sister wasn't listening. Rift had already moved on. Wide-eyed, Mao watched the russet tabby bound from ledge to ledge, seemingly flying through the air. Sunlight fell through the crack in the roof, glistening off Rift's pelt. That's so cool...! She didn't have the courage to follow in the other's pawsteps, and she doubted that she had the ability either. Right when she was awestruck by her athletic sister, Rift slipped. Mao saw it occur as if in slow motion. She barely had time to force out a cry when another she-cat shot forward and caught her sister before she could plummet to her death. One moment, Rift had been falling; the next, she was safe. Mao let out a sigh of relief, plopping back unto her haunches. When Wolf returned for her, she had half a mind to resist. She could climb back down on her own! Then she looked down, once more noticing the distance between the rafters and the ground, and quietly gave in. She had had enough with heights for a while. Unsurprisingly, Rift seemed unaffected by her close call. The path to the rafters now closed off, Rift now turned her attention to the unfamiliar she-cat who had come to their rescue. Mao, once she was back on solid ground, simply watched their interaction with a small smile. The cream-furred tabby fidgeted beneath Xuexi's stern gaze. "Yes, Mama." She apologized quietly.
Wolf, who had introduced herself as a cat from the clans, then proceeded to instruct Rift in some techniques. Mao was undeniably intrigued, but she didn't move to join them. Rather than learning to fight, she had more fun watching the two frolic. Her ears pricked at an unfamiliar name. Shade? If Shade had been like a father to Wolf, did that mean that he was Xuexi's mate? No, Xuexi had Shag. Uncertainly, she threw her gaze towards her father, who was sitting by Xuexi's side. She would ask Xuexi later. Lengxue didn't seem particularly enthusiastic as she headed over at Wolf's call. She made a stark contrast with the energetic Rift. Mao couldn't help the grin that emerged on her maw as she observed such a scene.
At the sound of approaching pawsteps, Mao turned. The tom who introduced himself Canren was quite a sight to behold, and not in a good way. Why did he look like that? Was he hurt? Xuexi would probably never allow her kits to appear so disheveled. Nevertheless, despite his strange appearance, he spoke with a friendly tone. The look that he threw Xuexi did not escape Mao's attention, but she did not understand the meaning behind it, merely blinking in confusion. "Hello, Canren!" She chirped, skipping over to him. "I'm Mao. Are you okay? You look all weird." Not a shred of hostility was visible within the amber eyes that met his. |
