Firepaw's Assessment

Firepaw's training was definitely coming along well, and now it was time for her to put his hunting skills to the test. She requested her apprentice to meet her by the river next to the beech copse where she would begin his hunting assessment, and she was very confident that he would pass with flying colors. After all, he was Dewshine's kit, and she knew first-paw how great a warrior her own former mentor had been to her.

Firepaw trotted up to Flurryshine. "I'm ready." He confirmed to her. "What do I need to catch?"

Flurryshine purred her approval when she saw Firepaw's flame-colored pelt through the reeds. "Slow down, now. I understand how excited you are, but first let me just start by saying you are a wonderful apprentice. You're punctual, respectful, talented, and you're a fast learner. You're going to make an amazing warrior in your turn, and I have every confidence you'll be able to pass your assessment. Now, for the actual test. You'll need to catch two fish, a frog or toad, and any rodent or bird you can find. Don't be upset if it takes you a bit to finish the assessment, and know that I'll always be watching out for you, so if you get into any trouble I'll help you. You may begin your assessment when ready."

Every confidence? That sure was a lot to waste on Firepaw. But hey, he wasn't going to argue with his optimistic mentor. Alright... Two fish. An amphibian. And a land animal. Seemed easy enough, mostly. More than he'd catch on the usual hunting patrol, but he was the whole patrol at the moment. So, to start with the fish, he moved over towards the river. A salmon caught his eye. It wasn't huge, but not tiny either. He shot out his paw, claws hooked into its flesh, and pulled it out. His first catch was successful, now another fish.

The second fish was a small trout, which he caught with ease. Now came the hard part. An amphibian, the specialty of Shadowclan.

Firepaw wasn't very good at it, to say the least. It was a disaster. He stalked and squelched in the mud, leaving it hopping away, and he got it back in his sights but when he pounced, it got away. Discouraged, he decided to try again.

So Firepaw moved on to catch a mouse, and found that he was better. He tucked his legs and pounced, then landed solidly on the mouse, killing it.

One more time, Firepaw tried to catch a frog or toad. And one more time, he failed. Discouraged, the tom sat down. "Flurryshine, I can't catch it! I can't do frogs! Can I be done now?"
