Frosty Fennel [CLOSED]

The sky was as maroon as ever. As soon as he left his nest in the Warrior's den he scowled at the sky. The stars were still not visible and the ring of red where the sun should be was still high in the sky. His paw's led him to the Apprentice's den to collect his brand new apprentice. Fennelpaw appeared to be a competent kit, he hoped she would learn as fast as Poppypaw did. He didn't get his hopes too high though, all cats were different.

His fluffy head poked into the den, eyes gazing over all of the still sleeping apprentices. "Fennelpaw, meet me at the camp entrance." He meowed this while gently prodding her awake. He then turned and padded out, quietly whispering apologies to any others he had woken. The absence of the sun was leaving everyone on edge and stressed, he knew they all deserved more sleep than they probably got. Still, training must go on.

Groaning, Fennelpaw lifted herself off of the ground, flattening out her pelt before heading into the chilly air outside. The sudden change of atmosphere sent a chill down her spine; what with the cold temperature from the lack of sun and the ominous, red-hued light that shrouded the camp. The other cats weren't exempt from the effects of this either; little sleep was gotten in the nights, and everyone seemed to be more quiet, fretful, alert, as if they were all anticipating something terrible that they could not yet see. Shaking her head, she turned away from the scene and padded over to Froststone at the camp entrance. "What are we doing today?"

The tired eyes of Froststone landed on the newly named apprentice. Ever since he became deputy during these dark times, he had begun getting exhausted. The paranoia, suspicions, just everything... It was quite insane. "Training. Lets go, I can show you hunting and fighting today and we might get back before night." He flicked his tail, and they were off into the woods.

The pines cast ominous shadows in the bloody light. The white and gray paws of the deputy stopped in a mostly open clearing, the one he had also taken Poppypaw to. He turned to face the younger cat. "We will be learning hunting. First off do not make a sound, meaning no stepping on twigs. You must be aware of that. You must crouch down low to the ground, and keep your tail low. When you scent the air, you must also ensure that the wind is blowing towards you. This ensures that the prey will not scent you before you get to it. Once you're within pouncing range, you must attempt to break the prey's neck with your paws or bite it to kill it. Please observe."

Froststone scented the air for a small moment, noticing a small mouse close by. He crouched instinctively, beginning to stalk towards it with hunting prowess. As he got close enough, his white fur flashed in the light and he knew the mouse had noticed it. He pounced, getting to it before it had the chance to escape. With the mouse in his jaws he padded back to Fennelpaw. Quietly dropping it and burying it, he looked back to her. "You try. Don't worry about catching it, hardly anyone catches their first piece of prey."

Fennelpaw nodded, her pelt tinted red by the light. At least she'd blend in with the scenery. Curious eyes surveying the terrain, she noticed a little shrew quite a few tail-lengths away nosing through the leaf-litter. She sucked her breath in; don't waste your shot. Alright, what had he said again? Crouch l- ouch, a thorn. No, focus. Crouch low. Tail down. Wait, what about the wind? She sniffed the air. Wind's okay. Now the hard part. One paw. Two paws. Three- she cringed as a crunch echoed through her ears, and the shrew perked its ears. Oh god. Wait. Though slightly more alert, it went back to shuffling through the leaf litter. Okay, continue. Four paws, five, six, seven, eight, nine.. alright, close enough. Crouch low, ready to pounce, and-

She sprang off into the air, claws unsheathed, front legs outstretched. The shrew looked up, the big red figure flying towards it, and as their eyes interlocked, it seemed to realise what was coming. Though it knew its last breath was near, the little rodent still turned in a feeble attempt to flee, but sharp claws pierced through it before it could make its fearful escape. It squirmed in her grasp for a moment. Oh right, break its neck. She sunk her teeth into its scruff, licking still-warm blood from her muzzle. The salty, metallic taste flooded her mouth, rushing through her system, and she grinned with pride, holding the mouse in her teeth and turning to her mentor.

"Apprentices don't usually catch their first prey, huh?"

Froststone watched, pleased with the apprentice. She had learned quickly and had caught her first piece of prey on her first try. "Excellent job. Now, bury that there and we can get on to fighting." He flicked his tail to the area where she should bury the shrew.

"Now, there are a couple of ways of fighting. You can fight fast, or you can fight hard. Basically if you're small, lithe, or anywhere in that area, you should fight fast. Quick strikes are useful. Or if you're large and strong, you cannot move as fast. Therefore you need to hit hard. Personally, I have to hit fast. You just do whichever is easier for you. That leads us to learning how to fight. The most basic attack you can do is raise your paw, unsheath your claws, and hit the cat as hard as possible in the weakest possible area. A good example would be the face, or the belly. Do not hit to kill, that is frowned upon. You should not kill on purpose. Occasionally it'll happen by accident though. Try attacking me with a basic front paw blow." Froststone readied himself for the paw to baff him somewhere. Wherever she thought was weakest. Based on how fast she was learning, he hoped this would be an easy tactic for her.

Patting down a mound of soil over the prey, Fennelpaw nodded and turned to Froststone, claws unsheathing. A weak point? Okay, so she would have to hit quick; even if she didn't grow up to be lithe, she was puny compared to the deputy, and needed to act as such, no matter how confident she was. She couldn't reach his belly, which was what she was going to go for. Probably not the legs; that wouldn't hurt too much, and she wasn't trying to stop him from moving. Should she go for the eyes? No.. she wouldn't want to blind him, either temporarily or permanently. Might as well just go for the face in general. Baring her teeth in an attempted snarl, she raised her paw and slashed at his cheek, right below his eye. Was that good enough?

Fennelpaw: 20/70

He felt her paw biff him on the cheek. He blinked quietly at the apprentice, cheek stinging slightly from the blow, but not much more than that. "You can hit harder, but that's the gist of it. Now for defense, you can dodge and counter the attack, or you can dodge. Try to dodge my attack now. Since I'm bigger than you, a hint would be to use speed to your advantage." He readied himself to strike. The white deputy brought his front paw down on the apprentice's forehead lightly, ensuring he wouldn't hurt her at all.

OOC: Just a tip, it's easier for others to see what move you've done and their own health/stamina levels if you arrange it about the same way I did it. You don't have to but it's quite helpful to others.

Fennelpaw nodded and attempted to duck out of the way, but flinched as Froststone's paw caught onto her forehead before she could dodge. Frowning, she shook her head lightly and tried to ignore the stinging on her skin.

OOC: sorry, but i don't see anything about dodging in the battle system or the rules page? is it a new feature or? oh okay thanks

Froststone watched his apprentice, he knew she wouldn't have been able to dodge that. "You tried, that's the important thing right now. You'll get better. Come on, get your piece of prey and we'll head back to camp, good training today." He flicked his fluffy white tail for the apprentice to follow, pleased with how the training had gone. Perhaps next training they'd go more in-depth on combat though.


OOC: There's no dodging thing in the rules, that was just an RP thing. Sorry for not making that more clear!

Fennelpaw nodded, still a bit disappointed, and went to dig up her catch. The sight of her first prey put a smile back on her face, and she picked it up by the scruff, following Froststone back to camp. Crunching through the leaf-litter, she darted through the entrance, dropping her prey down by the fresh kill pile before heading off to do who-knows-what. Though fighting hadn't been that great, she still regarded the day as a success. I mean, she did manage to catch her prey on the first time.
