Quick Hunting (Wide Open)

Brushpaw sat alone by the entrance of ShadowClan camp, bored out of her mind. Firestone had told her to go on the next patrol, but no one seemed to be forming up. She had to practice her hunting skills somehow... but how was she supposed to do that now? Go out alone? The mottled black apprentice sat and waited, knowing the next patrol would have to leave and take her along with it, eventually.

"Waiting for a patrol?" mewed Pumapaw as she approached Brushpaw. She settled down beside her fellow apprentice, green eyes meeting Brushpaw's "I'm not surprised, if I'm honest. Most of this clan is bone idle, it's cats like me-- and you-- who practically keep it together." she scoffed. Her eyes lifted from Brushpaw. "Now, if only one of those said cats would join us, so we might actually be able to leave his StarClan forsaken camp." muttered Pumapaw darkly lashing her tail.

It was strange to be addressed as if she were the same as this younger apprentice. Normally, other apprentices avoided her. Brushpaw was trying to think why this she-cat was including her as the same type until she remembered- Pumapaw had been one of the cats to listen to Lichenpaw. Huh... maybe not every other apprentice in ShadowClan besides her and Stonepaw was worthless. She wasn't used to having friends... "That would be nice," the fluffy she-cat agreed, "but I don't think any of them have time to bother with a couple of apprentices. What if we just go out on our own? I'm sure you and I could catch a pile of prey in half the time three warriors could."

Pumapaw smiled softy, when Brushpaw agreed with her an her statement. The she-cat was slightly worried that she wouldn't, that she'd find her rude and un loyal, but no. At least some cats no the truth. Pumapaw glanced quickly around the camp to see if anyone else would be joining them. She frowned slightly at the lack of cats doing anything remotely useful. "Yeah," she mewed clambering to her paws attention, her attention not entirely focused on Brushpaw"We should leave now, before they do notice and we'd have more time to catch prey." Pumapaw flicked her tail and trotted towards the only way in and out of camp.

Asterleaf spotted two apprentices headed out of camp. "Excuse me...where do you two think you are going without a warrior?" She stood as tall as she could. She wasn't tall compared to some of the other warriors in ShadowClan, but she was the tiniest of the warriors either. Asterleaf looked at the two younger she-cats and waited for her answer.

Brushpaw was about ready to go out of camp, glad for Pumapaw's agreement, when the voice of a warrior came from behind. It was one of the younger ones, Asterleaf- Littlestar's kit, she recalled. Distaste for the leader of ShadowClan blossomed into immediate distaste for this warrior, but she had to at least act respectful to someone ranked higher than her, regardless of the fact that the she-cat likely wasn't pureblooded as she and Pumapaw were. "We were just going to go hunting," she replied innocently, tone light but eyes unflinching. "Would you care to join us?"

IC: Pumapaw stopped walking at the call of a warrior, The she-cat let out an agitated huff and turned to face the warrior, tail sweeping angrily across the ground. The warrior's voice was cold and demanding, and Pumapaw felt a pang of resent. the apprentice joined Brushpaw, gazing coldly at the warrior. "We were just doing your job, somebody has to keep the clan running after all..." she drawled.

Asterleaf wanted to take her paw and smack these fools across the maw, but she refrained. "Pumapaw, if you feel as though you aren't getting enough time out on patrol, perhaps talk to Scorchfang, the deputy who makes the patrols." As an apprentice if another cat had spoken to her the way these two were she would have apologized, or maybe the icy looks would have gone over her head.

Disregarding the attitude that was being handed out, Asterleaf nodded to Brushpaw's question. "Yes, I would, Brushpaw. Where were you planning on going?" Even though these apprentices were acting too big for their paws, Asterleaf still gave them free-reign to direct the hunt.

Brushpaw shrugged nonchalantly, noticing the angry glares of the warrior and choosing to disregard them. Pumapaw could have been slightly more diplomatic... but she didn't blame the slightly less intelligent she-cat for making the mistake. She would have liked to openly disrespect Asterleaf as well, but as long as she at least painted herself as a reasonable she-cat she would avoid suspicion and obvious distaste. "Anywhere, really- wherever the prey is. We were going to head out into the forest and see what we could find." Her voice was still light, but her eyes were growing impatient, wanting to head out before they ran out of moonlight.

IC: Pumapaw turned her head away as Asterleaf addressed her. She wasn't going to the deputy, the deputy should be more aware of his clan! Pumapaw let out a loud huff, glancing at Brushpaw as she spoke. "Sure." she mewed bluntly. The sooner Pumapaw was away from Asterleaf, the better.

Brushpaw turned around and took lead of the patrol, hoping that Asterleaf wouldn't take offense. They needed to get out there before all of the prey ran off. Finally, they were out in the territory, and raw skill was the only thing that mattered- skill that came inside your blood, along with moons of hard work. It felt magical, to be out in the dark of the evening, slipping effortlessly through the shadows, unseen by any creatures around you. It was freedom, it was power- it was ShadowClan. The apprentice padded silently through the territory, searching with both eyes and ears for any prey, when she stopped abruptly at the sight of a large vole, nibbling away on a stalk of grass. It didn't notice her, but she saw it as clear as day in the slim moonlight that filtered through the pine needles. Instantly, instinctively, she dropped into a hunting crouch. Her mottled paws, blending together with the mud beneath them, moved forwards as inexorably as the wind. Her jaws parted, catching the small animal's scent- she was downwind of it, so there was no chance of it noticing her unless she made a sound, which she wouldn't. Finally, when she judged that she was close enough, her hind legs swayed a bit- her bushy tail flattened out- and she pounced, claws outstretched, teeth bared.

Of course, she caught it, and swiftly she ended its life without so much as a tiny squeak. A swipe of her claws, and at least two of her Clanmates were fed. This was what warrior life was. Her eyes darted towards the starry sky above, and she blinked a silent prayer of thanks for the prey's life before trotting back over to Pumapaw and the warrior, half a smirk on her face as she carried back the juicy piece of fresh-kill, daring her fellow apprentice- and the unclean-blooded warrior- to do better.
