an early morning hunt (open, but let Jade post first)

the chirrup of a small bird awoke the sleeping apprentice. Yawning loudly, Weaselpaw stretched in her nest and rolled over, blinking the sleep out of her eyes. Her green orbs took a moment to adjust to the light. The ginger she-cat sat up and glanced around the den, her eyes landing on her friend, Flamepaw. With a smile, she prodded her into consciousness. "Hey, Flamepaw! Want to go on a quick patrol? You're welcome to bring someone else if you want." meowed Weaselpaw.

Flamepaw blinked awake. A patrol? Oh, yes! Dawn was always a good time to patrol - prey was sleepy and less reflexive, but so were cats. We can wake up fast, though. After dipping her face in the cold water to wake her up, she walked toward camp entrance. An older cat stopped her. Cinderfall, the leader's son. Hopefully he was not as prideful as Stormstrike. "Where do you two think you're going without a warrior? If you're patrolling, I'm coming with." So he wasn't that stuck up. Nice. "All right, if it's ok with Weaselpaw." She looked over at her friend.

Weaselpaw had almost walked right into Cinderfall, feeling a little stupid with her carelessness. "Sorry, Cinderfall." she mewed ears flattening apologetically. She'd completely forgotten that apprentices had to be accompanied by a warrior. If it wasn't for Shade she and her clan would be safe and everything could run smoothly. The apprentice's tail lashed angrily. Her eyes landed on Mottledpaw as he joined, blinking her eyes in greeting. " You're welcome to join us, just don't scare off the prey!" she chuckled.

"C-can I come?" Meadowpaw asked. She had not been on patrol since Shade left, and was still rather frightened by him. But she had decided that it was time for her to put her fears to rest. She would go, leave camp, and prove to herself that there was nothing to be afraid of. Even though there probably was.

Flowerpaw padded out of the apprentice's den, yawning. She arced her back and padded over to the group near the entrance. "M-May I come?" Flowerpaw mewed. She needed to stretch her legs and... Oh! Meadowpaw! The gray tabby had been wanting to talk to the white apprentice, but she had been too shy. Maybe now was her chance! Flowerpaw moved a little closer to the white she-cat and waited for a response from Stormstrike or the others.

Cinderfall was nearly overwhelmed by the five apprentices. That was more than enough cats should they run into trouble. "If course you can, you all can! I suggest spread out, but stay in sight." He smiled at the young- and one not-so-young- apprentices, then beckoned with his tail to start the patrol.

Weaselpaw smiled as more apprentices joined the group. She had to admit it was a big patrol, but hopefully that meant they'd get more prey with this many cat.

When Cinderfall beckoned with his tail, the tall ginger apprentice, quickly joined him. Weaselpaw trotted ahead, nose twitching as she scented for prey. She wasn't the best hunter, she knew that, but she needed to get better. As she moved through the bushes and reeds, a flash of brown caught her eyes and she instinctively dropped into a hunting crouch. It was a perfect crouch, but it'd get better.

The apprentice moved swiftly, chasing after her prey. She rounded a corner and there it sat, a frog. Weaselpaw sized up the distance between her and the brown amphibian. Haunches tensed, she sprang forward.

The frog croaked and looked at Weaselpaw just as she sprang, eyes widening in fear. The creature leaped forward, in an attempt to escape. To Weaselpaw's surprise she landed above the frog and trapped in her paws. She glanced around quickly, then killed it with a swift bite. She smiled proudly to herself, before burying her prey and joining the patrol.

((OoC: I apologize for the delayed reply! I forgot to watch this topic!))

Mottledpaw beamed when Cinderfall agreed that he could come on the hunting patrol as well. He was still a young Apprentice with lots to learn and practice in terms of hunting ability; he wanted to take advantage of any training opportunity he could get, and when the opportunity to patrol fell into his lap he gratefully took advantage of it. The fluffy tortoiseshell tom followed the patrol - an odd one, with many Apprentices but only one Warrior - out of camp and towards the hunting grounds.

Mottledpaw kept his ears perked and his lips lightly parted, drawing in the musty, cool scents of the river and the surrounding foliage. The dark tom nodded his head softly when Cinderfall suggested they spread out; he watched Weaselpaw pad off with Cinderfall, so Mottledpaw dropped to the back of the patrol, dawdling behind them and searching through the grasses and shrubs for any sign of prey. A small hit his tongue, and he stopped for a moment, unable to remember.

Vole! Mottledpaw recalled to himself just as the small brown-gray creature skittered around the edges of a bush in front of him. The tom crouched, feeling his thick belly fur brush the ground. Quickly the young tom sucked his belly up, knowing it might scare the creature, and walked gently towards it, feeling confident that he was making no sound. The RiverClan Apprentice leaped, landing squarely on top of the creature and giving it no chance to run before he nipped its neck.

He picked up the limp creature in his jaws and trotted proudly towards his patrol, scenting that Weaselpaw had made a catch as well. "Great jov!" he purred through the vole's tail. Upon seeing that his Clanmate didn't have the prey with them, however, he asked uncertainly, "Was I suffosed to leafe thif in a hole?"

Flowerpaw lifted her head up, trying to catch a scent. 'Mouse!' she thought as a warm scen hit her nose. She stalked the scent until she spotted a small gray body nibbling on a seed. The silver tabby crouched low to the ground, making sure to tuck her long tail under her. She creeped closer and leaped up, trapping the mouse between her claws. Flowerpaw quickly bit the creature and lifted the limp body from the dusty ground.

She trotted happily back to the rest of the patrol, proud of her catch. She saw that Mottledpaw had caught a vole. "Great catch!" She mewed. She noticed Weaselpaw's frog aswell. "You too!" The silver tabby added.

OOC: Dang! I got a 10...

Meadowpaw trotted down to the river. She sat down, carefully making sure that her shadow didn't hit the river. There, she waited. And waited. And waited some more. Then she saw a glint of silver. Fish! Meadowpaw Lifted her paw, and then brought it down in a scooping motion, barely missing it. The fish swam away as fast as it could. "I was so close!" Meadowpaw was disappointed. But soon after, she heard a low growl behind her she turned, and saw a fox emerging from the underground, snarling with its teeth beard.  "H-h-h-help!" Mwadowpaw yoweld. "There's a f-f-fox! Cinderfall! Flamepaw! S-somebody, please!" She bolted in the direction of the beach copes, tears streaming down her face as she ran. She hoped that she could climb a tree to escape the fox's iron jaws. The fox ran close behind her, snapping at her tail.

Cinderfall's head turned. "Bloody foxes..." He muttered. "Flowerpaw! Flamepaw! Weaselpaw! Mottledpaw! Stop hunting, we have to drive this fox away!" His paws pounded towards the fox, attacking it with all his might. He blazed past Meadowpaw, using as much speed as he could muster with a crooked tail.

Cinderfall used Run and Tackle, dealing 12 damage and using 10 stamina.
So did Flamepaw, but it dealt six.
