One More Time… [Birth topic, open after the MC/MCA and kits post]

Moonlight was lying on her nest inside the nursery, ears twitching as she waited for the cramps she knew would soon arrive. She wasn’t exactly sure when they would arrive, and she had been mentally preparing herself for a couple days now, but after several litters, the silver tabby queen was no stranger to the symptoms and waiting times of a pregnancy. And this time her swollen belly was relatively small, so she could tell that this time only one or two kits would be born.

Her ears suddenly shot upwards as she felt the first cramp. She didn’t call Mintwhisker nor Honeypaw right away, as she knew sometimes random cramps could happen and she didn’t want to waste the Medicine cats’ time if it wasn’t the time…however, her find was soon settled when she felt another cramp followed by the already well-known pain that came from starting to give birth.

“The kits are coming!” She didn’t call anyone in particular, not knowing who would be around to listen. So instead of panicking as she waited for the quick action of the medicine cats she focused on the work at hand.

Hearing his mate yowl that the kits were coming, Tinylegs sprinted to the nursery as fast as his little legs would allow him. Skidding to a halt in front of the grey she-cat, he nudged Moonlight's cheek, attempting to confront her as much as possible, seeing as though she was most likely in a lot of pain. "You're strong, you can do this," he mewed, a soft smile on his muzzle. Moonlight had done this more than once, so it wasn't exactly new to the queen, but he knew it could still be scary all the same, and he promised to be by her side every time it happened.

Moonlight saw no signs of the medicine cats after her mate had entered in the nursery, and apparently her kits weren’t willing to be patient and wait for them.

Knowing she had absolutely no choice at this point, she gave a warm smile to Tinylegs before clenching her teeth together and following the same procedures she had done in the past. However she soon found herself in a somewhat new experience, without a stick to bite nor herbs to numb the pain or aid her through this, the birthing process at least felt longer and in all honesty more tortuous than ever before. Those moments of agony surely made her feel a newfound respect for those queens that had to give birth without any possible aid from a medicine cat.

It wasn’t until the contractions ceased and the pain subsided that she turned around with a tired smile to see her kits. Led by maternal instincts she immediately picked them up and placed them close to her belly, cleaning them lovingly.

Waspkit began to mew loudly at the sudden new feeling of complete darkness around him, something that was slightly familiar but had something different with it. Someone had been with him throughout this whole thing, his new mother and father.

Mintwhisker dropped her pitiful pile of herbs the moment she stepped into camp. She knew she should've waited to sneak out of camp- Moonlight's litter had been overdue a few days ago. Stupid, stupid... All she'd wanted was time to herself, to think about everything that had happened over the last few moons without interruption. Clearly, Starclan wasn't about to cut her any slack. The taupe she-cat scrambled towards the nursery. Moonlight was an experienced queen. She'd be fine, right?
Mintwhisker let out a sigh of relief when she ducked into the nursery. "S-sorry, Moonlight," She gasped. "C-congratulations..." The tabby flicked her tail, pausing to catch her breath before stepped forward apologetically. She was right, her grandmother and the litter were all perfectly fine. Mintwhisker dipped her head respectfully to her grandmother and grandfather in turn before returning to the edge of the nursery. The she-cat loved kits, but she always felt awkward in the nursery, knowing that she would never be a mother herself. It made her feel oddly empty... a chance to have a family that she would never have the choice to take.
But never mind that. Moonlight had given birth, and Skyclan was positively thriving. The Medicine Cat smiled to herself, wrapping her tail around her legs and leaning against the wall of the den. Something had finally gone right. Perhaps Starclan had finally decided they had suffered enough.

Watching as the painful process began, Tinylegs stayed by his mates side, wishing he could take some of the pain from her and put it onto himself. "You're doing great," he purred calmly, nuzzling the queen's cheek with his. Soon enough, Moonlight had given birth to a healthy tom. The small brown bundle of fur didn't exactly resemble him or his mate's pelt coloring, but none the less, he thanked StarClan for this blessing of life. "What should we call him?" Tinylegs asked as Moonlight began to lick the kit.

Mewing loudly and scrambling after the fresh scent of milk, the second kit flailed her paws, pressing them against her mother's pink belly. She was smaller than her brother, but energetic nonetheless, and she searched her way to a warm spot with her undeveloped senses, huddled against the other kit.

Mewling as his mother cleaned him the young struggled blindly towards the scent of milk and warmth. The soon to-be names Hailkit suckled until he was full before curling up against his mother with all his fluffy kitten fur. Purring contently he doin drifted off into slumber.

The third kitten wailed softly as her mother cleaned her, shivering at the sudden cold coming over her. Scrambling towards the warmth, the tiny gray and white kitten made herself comfortable next to her squirming siblings. She was definitely not as big as them, but was still quite healthy in size. Nuzzling against her mother's fur, she suckled until her belly was full, before curling up and falling asleep.
